Best of luck Jon. Looking forward to this one.
If you can, a few pictures of the kit with something against the hull to give a size perspective would be great,
    Thanks. Peter.๐Ÿ˜Š

Just a quick update i have finished building the build stand for Katie today, tomorrow i start on the hull to make it ready for the radio gear and motor etc which should be here on Friday. Hopefully a friend of mine should be dropping of some lead so i will be able to chop it up and fill the keel area but i am going to make and a external bolt on weight that i can take off when on show.

Jon, sorry, not that I know of. I can buy fibreglass bulb keels to fit my bigger Thames Barges, but they would not fit a pilot cutter. For my smaller barges I make what is essentially a shallow box about 3" wide, 10" long and about 1/2" thick. A 6mm threaded rod goes through the top for bolting to the hull. Make the box but do not fit the front. Fill with either sheet lead or lead fishing ballast, put side on glued and screwed. The leading and trailing edge can be rounded off. I have used brass sheet or ply for the front and back, depends how much weight you want. Probably would look ugly on a pilot cutter, but it works. Hope you can understand what I mean.
As I use this it is a fin keel, but there is no reason why you could not adapt it to fit along the long keel of your boat. As an afterthought, Mistyoptic made an extension weighted keel much the same idea as this for a small sailing boat he built in the Dutch style recently. Find the posts on that, he did do some photos, they were in Build Blogs under Dutch Auxiliary

    Cheers, Nerys

Hi Dave, yes it does show a deck rail and below it I have got to cut the side of the Hull out to let the deck wash out, that will be fun?.

Does the plan not show a deck rail all round the inside of the hull?

Hi Have made a bit of a boo boo on the Deck Beams i measured the beams from the plan and as Dave pointed out the measurements are not always correct and they are not, never mind i am probably not be the first but i am learning by mistakes i make, but not all are wasted i can use the longer ones recut them for shorter ones.

All part of the fun Muskrat.
We have been there and unfortunately due to the kit manufacturers most of us tend to fall into the same trap.

Don't let it put you off.
    Keep going.
A few photos of you progress would be nice to see.

All is not lost. We do learn from our boo boos. Being able to use some of them is is good thing. Every step in this build will have ups and downs. The satisfaction will be that you built her and they are your fixes only you know what they are.

Hi, After speaking to Dave769 yesterday i have partly sorted my out of shape Hull at least the Hull measurements are very close to what they need to be using two straps to hold in place. I am still waiting for deck support timber to stiffen the hull once glued into place but assured it will be here on Monday, I have also increased the size of the hole in the rear of the Hull for the prop shaft to go through because i am fitting a 40 mm prop instead of the 35mm which was to small. One or two pictures for now but more next week.

Hi Dave, I have roughened the top two to three inches or so and clean all the inside with the Iso fluid you advised me to use, I liked your blog on the ballast external cast very interesting.

Should work out OK. Once the deck stringers and deck beams are glued in place and set hard the hull should remain stable.
You do need to roughen the hull where you glue the stringers and beams. The manufacturing process will have left a waxy covering to the fibreglass and nothing will stick if you don't.

    Hi
I think I may have not got this right.

The dimension I was thinking about was from the top edge of the moulding to the top edge of strip of wood youโ€™ve just added, which I assume will be where the deck and beams are fixed to?

    Thanks

Hi AndyB, That is the way i went Hull and Plans, when i measured the plans between the top edge of the hull and deck height it is 50mm there is about three mm's Stern to Bow. I will keep a look out for Moonbeam and Good luck on the start of your Katie.

    Cheers Jon

    Thanks for showing your progress
Iโ€™ve recently bought a Katie hull and plans, but have yet to make a start, as Iโ€™ve a Moonbeam to finish first.

Iโ€™d be interested in the measurement from the top edge - gunwale - down to the top edge of the supports youโ€™ve attached, as it indicates two possible heights on the plans.

Looking forward to seeing your progress
