    Mt Washington by Dumas
    Cut out the hull.
The directions say one thing the plans show another 😂
Installed some ledgers to support the deck as per the plans.
I don't do Social Media or Blogs this is my first, so don't expect too much🤓
Love that CA, but of course I never have enough ventilation, surprised I have any brain cells left

    Fabricated and installed the Deck.
Way too much Plastic for me. Hopefully it looks better when finished.
Starting to look like Mickey Mouse and Rinkey Dink!!
The original Mt. Washington was a Wooden Side Wheeler.
It was a Magnificent Vessel. That is why I wanted to build her.
I much prefer to work with wood.
I am considering Mahogany Decks. The Plans call for Bass Wood.
I would insert black .020 strips between planks. not called for in the plans.
Please give me any thoughts anyone has on this.
    Thanks,
    Trev

Your Walnut Decking is Spot On!
Walnut is beautiful! The frame around my Typhoon plan, that is hanging on the wall behind the model, is Walnut.

Walnut is a nice wood with close grain and nice to work with have a look at my Police boat boat the deck is done in walnut with black card caulking.

I believe it had a painted deck.
    Thanks for your input.
Yes I can machine 1/8 Mahog. which would be closer to scale.
    Thanks.

    Go wood young man👍
Mahog would be good if you can find some nice close grained pieces.
Otherwise it can look kinda over-scale.
    What did the original have?
    Cheers, Doug 😎

    Did some sanding.
reminds me of why i hated working on fiberglass boats. if God wanted us to have fiberglass boats he would have made fiberglass trees.
I am seriously considering installing a mahogany deck. The plans call for 1/4 inch wide deck planks. That is out of scale.
I will install 1/8 inch planks with a .020 black seam between.
That just added another year to the project.😭😭😭

In the defence of ferro cement boats, I actually owned a 30`cruiser until recently and it had a layer of cement over a very old clinker hull. This was applied in the 70`s to prolong the boats life, an inexpensive repair which can be completed by a plasterer rather than an expensive and hard to find boatbuilder.
Until very recently Andree 1v could be seen looking quite splendid in rivers and canals around Nottingham and Lincolnshire, I owned her and used her extensively for over 30 years.👍

    Hey Doug,
When I was running a marina in Cos Cob Ct. I had a client that built a ferro cement boat. It actually sailed but for me how unrewarding is building a boat out of ferro cement.
I have poured many foundations and floors out of concrete, That, in my mind is what concrete is for.

Not to mention steel, aluminium (aluminum for you😉), carbon fibre composite or even concrete trees Trev!
Mahog planked deck sounds great, fiddly but should look good. Go for it👍
BUT, if you dare to paint it😮 to match the original 🙈-
I'll never squeak to you again!🙊
    Good luck,
    Cheers, Doug 😎

    Assembled the Boat Deck.
Started planking the Main Deck. Used the Bass Wood with .020 Black caulking joints.
After looking at many, many pics of the Mt Washington, I came to the conclusion that mahogany would not be appropriate.
The width of the planking is not to scale they should be 1/8th not 1/4, but I went with the program.
    I guess I am slipping😭😭
Yes, I do take over the whole house with my builds. Good thing I am not Married🤓

The Paddle Boxes: that is an area that I have not addressed.
In real life I think they were cut out to reduce the vacuum caused by the rotation of the Wheel

    Hi PeeJay,
Many Thanks for the photos. I can never get enough.
I am going to go with green trim throughout. a satin white for the hull, topsides.
I ordered paint pens thru Amazon for the green detail (a first for me, paint pens? hard to teach an old dog new tricks😂😂😂😂)

There aren’t many photos that really show the main deck color. I have a number of postcards and the book, “Farewell to Mount Washington,” written by the developer of the kit plan, and there just aren’t any good deck views.

One other area raising questions is the upper side of the paddle boxes, which are in a darker color in some shots. Here are some of my pictures of MT Washington and some models of her.

Once you stain the existing deck, it looks good.
I used a white, thin line paint pen to make the window panes before installing them. Also cut out the wood behind the windows, to give them depth.
I wish I had time to finish mine.
You are making good progress, look great.

So would I Trev, so would I 😭
One small light at the end of the tunnel, I've finally figured out how to get the drive from my restored vintage Taycol Target motor right down low in the hull to match the shaft.
Thanks to inspiration from one of our 'steam nuts'😉
So far I've restored the hull. See blog

    Thanks Doug,
I would love to go across the pond and help you with your decking.
But unfortunately I am stuck in Bedford.
She looks like she has great Promise 😀😀
Actually I think bass wood strips and black caulking strips are easier to apply than etching.
I would love to see her finished😁

    Very very nice job Trev👍
Can you come and do my fish cutter deck please, pretty please 😁
She's an ancient Billing Boat kit very badly built which I inherited.
The deck was so dry and brittle it fell apart as I removed it from the hull prior to a full restoration and conversion from static to RC.
Can't compete with your planking so I guess I'll have to revert to etched / engraved ply🤔
Keep it up Trev, looking forward to further instalments and the sea trials.
    Cheers, Doug 😎

I found the best source for styrene supplies and brass is HobbyLobby. I also bought my paint pens there.
Instead of painting the wood below the paddle wheel boxes, I used styrene sheets and on other areas wood areas instead.

It has been a long time ago but I first made all the white crosses on the clear sheets. Then I cut it out each pane individually, gluing each pane to the back of the plastic facade with E6000 glue.
The painted frames look real good. 👍

The Photos show the steps I took for the Paddle Wheel Housings.
Cut out the fan detail on the embossed sheet.
Cut out the fan detail on the wheel boxes.
Apply the embossed sheet to the Wheel Housings.
Apply a Mahogany strip to the perimeter of the Housing.
    Highlight the detail with green
Still a little more to do😮😮
