Another board member of The Carpenter's Boat Shop, was given this beautiful model that had fallen off a shelf. He suggested I restore it, so we can donate it to The Carpenter's Boat Shop to raise funds for them. It had quite a bit of broken wood in the Bulwarks and cabin top, but the bigger problem was the damage to the hull and topside paint work. Luckily the wood underneath was fine, but it did mean the beautiful paint job had to be taken down and repainted. It's coming together nicely. Next stage is untangling and revamping the rigging! I have seen one other example of this model on eBay, but the seller had no information on where it came from. If you recognize it, Iโ€™d love to hear from you.

Hi Ed, that is one hell of a transformation on that boat, you have turned it into a work of art a very nice-looking schooner, the repairs matching in beautifully with the original timbers. You have certainly doubled the value of what it was. I was pleased to see once again the artwork in the corner, especially that wonderful picture,"not tonight it's a headache." Take good care of yourself, and best wishes for the New Year, regards, Gary.

    Hi EdH,
You have done a fantastic job on this boat.
    She looks beautiful.
Hopeful she will raise a lot of money for the Carpenter's Boat Shop.

    Well done.

    Martin.

ChrisG another modeling site filled me in. She's a model of Malabar ll. John Alden designed and built several boats for himself, all called Malabar, which he raced and cruised. There is a nice kit offered for this Malabar, but this is a prebuilt solid shelf model. Best, Ed

Thanks for the information re the beautiful Schooner, she bears a resemblance to Bluenose of which I have plans, topsides certainly different as your renovated model is of a `Gentlemens Yacht` where Bluenose was a very quick fishing boat.
I will hunt some plans and it might well be my next project especially as I have a large stock of lovely cedar strip that nobody on the site seems interested in.
All the very best to you and thanks ChrisG

    Ron H, thank you.
Tony Ash, lots of sanding, finishing with very fine wet and dry. Residue removed with mineral spirits. Spray paint was the better quality Rustoleum.
ChrisG, I think this will have to be local pick up. From other model sites, we found it is a model of Malabar ll. John Alden built many Malabars for himself to cruise and race. This is a solid model of number 2, sold fully built, but there is also a quite different kit offered, many of which have been finished to a very high standard. This boat is a strange mixture. The hull and much of the woodwork is finished beautifully, but some fittings and rigging are fairly low quality. The cheap hooks on the end of lines is a tell tale sign for a boat made say in China or Russia, but she is still an impressive model, well worth saving. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and wish you all the best for the New Year.
Thank you everyone for your interest.

Hello and what a beauty, I would love to own that model and congratulations to you for a splendid rebuild, she looks an absolute treat.
Pity I will be unable to bid for her, just a few thousand more miles than I can travel to "collect"
If you do find more information on what she is and if plans are available I would appreciate you letting me know.
I would like to wish you a very Happy New Year
    Regards ChrisG

Iโ€™ve just about finished the model schooner we are donating to The Carpenter's Boat Shop. This week I worked on the rigging, which was in quite a mess. The rig uses hooks instead of more realistic fittings, which did however simplify things. Several blocks were missing so I made more from hardwood. Though tempted to make something less boxy and more accurate, I realized I would have to replace all 19! The jaws on the main gaff needed a graft. For some reason, the main mast hoops were missing. I decided to add rolling balls to new hoops, threading tiny 1/16โ€ balls on fine wire, which was easier than using thread, but still a test! One of the model pages I follow found her origin. She is a model of Malabar ll. The famous marine architect John Alden designed and built several boats for himself, all called Malabar, which he raced and cruised. This is number 2. There is a nice kit offered for this same boat, but this is a prebuilt solid shelf model. Sheโ€™s going to a worthy cause. https://www.carpentersboatshop.org takes in 10 apprentices for 9 months and through community living, building beautiful boats and helping others, it changes a lot of lives. Check it out. Sheโ€™s 4โ€™ long and 3โ€™ 8โ€ high so can't be shipped.

Hi flaxbybuck. Malibar II is 42', so considerably smaller and your reasoning makes sense. The sail you describe is a Gollywobbler, but unlike a headsail, it was normally attached by four corners. One on each mast head, one at the foot of the foremast and one loose footed. Thanks for your interest. Ed

I see now from the photos and video that Malabar II is smaller than I had at first imagined. The simple sail pattern therefore makes good sense. The fishing schooners I referred to are Grand Banks schooners which were generally 80 - 120' long, and the combination of needing to sail very slowly whilst fishing, then full speed to return to port meant a flexible sail pattern was needed. In fact, they invariably used an additional head sail slung between the two masts (I don't know its correct name) to get every last knot of speed possible. I'm not so sure a smaller craft like Malabar would be capable of carrying so much sail.
Anyway, thanks for bringing this to our attention. A lovely looking craft, and a splendid restoration job. Just one question which is - have you sailed it yet ?๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you flaxbybuck. She's a model of Malabar II (although they kept the deck and cabin varnished instead of white). She was designed and built by John Alden and always had the single staysail sail plan. In the video in my later post, they mentioned that the sail plan was kept simple for easy handling. Maybe John Alden liked to race her with a small crew!

A lovely looking schooner and well done for restoring it. Did the original have just one staysail ? I am interested since, as a modern craft built for leisure use, it seems to differ from earlier fishing boats that would have a staysail, jib and flying jib.๐Ÿ˜‰

She is beautiful and a credit to you and your patience, I am very envious of the lucky person who wins the forthcoming bidding war. Great that the money will go to such a worthy cause.
I must admit I would prefer that my model could be sailed, what a wonderful sight that would be. Maybe one for my future build list, so many beautiful model boats to build and so little time๐Ÿค”

Exquisite Ed, a truly beautiful result๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
Do you also make jewellery in your 'spare' time?๐Ÿ˜‰

I sympathise with your grappling with the rigging.
Some 30 years ago (just before digital cameras I'm afraid๐Ÿค”) I was asked to renovate a model of the four masted barque Pamir, one of the 'Flying Ps', which the lady's grandfather had made.
It was only about 12" but fully square rigged๐Ÿ˜ฎ I made copious notes and sketches and took many 35mm photos. The many sails were sealed in ziplock bags labelled Foremast, Main mast and Mizzen. Even so putting it all back together and re-rigging after dismantling, washing the sails and ratlines, cleaning and revarnishing masts, decks and deck fittings, repainting hull was a nightmare which ruined my sleep for weeks.
Might have been easier at 48" LoA, like your schooner, instead of 12๐Ÿ˜‰
I tried hard to keep the model 'as per Grandpa' but I've often wondered since; How much was grandpa and how much was me in the result?
Main thing, the lady was pleased and it took pride of place on her mantelpiece.
    Man was I relieved!๐Ÿ˜Š
Can't wait to see your next project Ed, great work๐Ÿ‘
    Cheers, Doug๐Ÿ˜Ž

Well done Ed, an incredible job, and you certainly went that extra mile with your fine detailed fittings blocks, and rigging. An absolutely beautiful boat and a credit to your skills and patience. I will be very interested to hear the selling price of this beautiful schooner. Regards, Gary.

When we found the model I have been renovating is of Malabar ll (see previous post), Michael, the modelโ€™s donor, found this beautiful modern video of the actual boat. This is a preview but if you subscribe you can see the whole thing. They have many fabulous videos of traditional boats.

Thanks Ed very interesting video and what a great sailing machine the Malabar is, just proves how good the old sailing boats were whichever side of the pond they were designed and built. Just look at the extraordinary J class.
