I know this is not the normal build on this site but I thought if y'all want to see it I will keep posting. This is a replica of a boat that raced here locally (Louisville, KY). I grew up on the Ohio river about an hour from the Madison Indiana Regatta (unlimited hydros). So not only did we have drag boats but the big boys too! A lot of sport boating, a few sailing yachts, cabin cruisers and of course House boats ( have one in the works soon). As a young man I got to ride in all of them. But I was so impressed with these old flat bottoms ๐Ÿ˜ฎ. ( Talk about brass balls) I have had this Idea of a real V-drive setup in my head so I'ma try to work that out. Found this transfer case from a 1/8 monster truck. I think I can make it work. Working in 1/6 scale. I sourced a Hemi engine. 4074 brushless 6s setup? Thanks to all on this site for being friendly and helpful. I really love the diverse subjects. Thanks, Dave (RR)

    Hi RR,
I am looking forward to seeing the paint job you mentioned as I have done a bit of custom spraying in my time, Mainly on motorcycles.

I considered doing a jet drive ski boat ( still might in the future) but decided on all out flat bottom drag boat. The TFL jet with a reverse bucket is on my list, they are so cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž I have to have one...someday ๐Ÿ˜‰. Dave

Hey JB, this little transfer case is a 1:1 ratio with a clogged belt... So it runs dry, it has high speed sealed stainless roller bearings. I experimented with a high speed air drill and ran it at 15000 rpm for about 2 minutes and it held together. That was with no load tho, so many variables may change that. I think it will work...we will see ๐Ÿค” Thanks, Dave

Hey Martin, the hull will be .125" thick Birch plywood covered with 4 ounce cloth and plenty of resin. It will be approximately 36" long and 12" beam. It will be completely painted. I worked in a GM dealership as a painter (retired now) and this will have a crazy airbrushed paint job out of the 1970's. Candy, pearls, lace and fade. I think the hull will hold up to what I am doing with it, possibly going to crash it anyway...we will see ๐Ÿ˜ Thanks, Dave

    Hi RR,
    Interesting and different.
I for one would like to see your progress on this project.
What materials are you making the hull out of ?
Can you give us an idea of the size?

    Martin.

Looks interesting Dave, do you think the transfer case will handle the revs required. Is it oil filled or dry (greased) ? Thought about doing my Hartley cabin boat with a V drive, but couldn't find anything which looked suitable for high speed. Still like the idea of the motor in the back (I went the jet way) which gives you clear space up front.

Got the lower hull sheeting done, I use a lot of wood glue in this stage as you can see before and after. The gorilla glue sucks itself into the small gaps and when it dries it is strong. It will also get a coat of total boat epoxy on the inside after sheeting the sides. Dave

Todays work went well, Finished up the hull sides. This rear section to transom is curved drastically so I soaked the wood for 30 minutes and taped it around pint cans. Let it dry overnight and made it easier to attach. Also got a coat of total boat resin (thinned slightly) on the entire inside to seal it. Will use fiberglass cloth and total boat resin tomorrow on the hull. So far so good...waiting on Amazon delivery (the fiberglass cloth) ๐Ÿ˜” Dave

Last evenings work went well. Got all the deck skins in place and sanded. I have a couple little filler spots. Hope to start the fiberglass today. Slow but sure...I am going to run a 3674 brushless 2600 kv with a 120A esc on 3S Lipo to start, I can go up to 6S with this motor/esc setup. Don't know if the little transfer case will take it. It has to be fast! ( After all it is a Drag boat) We will see. Thanks, Dave

This is my rough setup so far... 3674 motor tucked in dummy block, still working on motor mount... Transfer case will get more bracing. Blah blah blah right? Thanks, Dave

The hull looked kind of plain so I added side boards to the interior and side skirts to the windscreen. I will make interior panels as well. Got the whole boat fiberglassed sanded down and second coat of Total boat high performance resin on. I will switch over to epoxy primer after this sanding (easier to sand and get flat) This resin is not easy to sand at all. Went through 12 pieces of paper and about 2 hours with 1 sanding. It's labor intensive and time consuming (and expensive) but it's worth it in the end. Thanks, Dave RR

Been working on the drivetrain. It seems like it is going to work...having trouble finding a universal joint that is 5mm motor shaft to a 3/16" prop shaft ๐Ÿค”. Anybody know where I can find one please let me know. Going to beef up the rudder shaft to 3/16". Will post again...taking a vacation to Arizona. Gonna check out Barret Jackson Auction. Hopefully they have a couple woodies... Thanks, Dave RR

Hi Dave, like the motor,- is that one with the 2 fans in the top? Re the coupling, I ended up making my own, with large diam silicone tube and splined aluminium ends, as every Chinese universal I tried was rubbish. I have one like the one you show in the first pic, but the vibration was so bad I couldn't use it, (more for slow speed stuff like printers) Tried a TFL one (supposed to be good, lot of guys use the TFL jets with them) but the polypropylene shock absorber inside was far too firm, and was about as much use as a solid coupling.

Pretty much all of the Chinese Carden type UJs are only for cars/crawlers, and anything else for printers etc. To handle the 30,000rpm your motor will be trying to run at on 3s, you will need something precise for a coupling, as vibration might be a problem. I'd look at a US or German product designed for fast boats, (maybe contact a US boat racing club to see what they recommend). Make sure your shaft is lined up spot on as well,- every little bit helps to cut bearing killing vibration and racket.

I bought 4mm, 5mm and 1/8" reamers from Ali Express to match the Chinese motor shaft sizes so I could make my own couplings. So far, the coupling in the Hartley jet boat has stood up to a 30A loading and runs quite smoothly (just the Chinese bearings in the jet unit make a racket๐Ÿ˜) Runs a 36/60 2550kv inrunner.

This week's work went well. Have the rudder box installed. Have the stuffing box installed, motor mount and transfer case mount installed. Added a short turn fin, drilled dash to accept gauges. I got the gauge kit from Mack rc industries. I used UV glue for the lenses (came out ok). Made up the radio box with a magnetic hatch. Seat mounts attached. Finally ready for sanding and priming. This step will take me a while but I will keep you posted asap. Thanks,. Dave

3 days of priming and wet sanding. Finally have a color on. I made 14 plastic panels for the interior panels and floor. Also made8 strips to cover the plywood edge to be painted and then installed. The wifey picked purple and yellow ๐Ÿ™„. I can work with it. It will get .04 silver flake and then cleared. Then some airbrush work. Yep purple and yellow ๐Ÿ˜ด.... Dave RR
