Finally managed to finish the restoration thanks to some fine weather.
Repainted the front cabin sides after repair and fitted the windows into the slots on the inside of the cabin. Roof planking replaced with mahogany planks in place of the original thin mahogany laminate. I don't think this will suffer lifting like the previous attempt. Added some cockpit detail including door access to rear cabin and front cabin. Electrics refitted and radio tested so all set for a relaunch tomorrow. This is an original Aerokits model made by my friend Bill Lucy so the restoration was to make the model look as near as possible to the original from the 1960's era. Pics of the model plus a couple of views of the repaired inside front cabin.

Finally working on this ship. All hand cut out wood. I appreciate the laser cut models. Ok Rc it with outboard electric motor. Plans looked easy enough but it isn’t. I’ll fiberglass the Holland maybe add mahogany skin to deck. Plenty room fir electronics in midsection if I make roof removable.

Made some more progress sanding down the cockpit floor and rear roof. Made some seats in the cockpit and fitted the front cabin windows having made a jig to hold in place whilst glue sets.
The cabin roof which I had laminated with mahogany a few years ago is now, as the weather warms, showing signs of lifting. I had used the original lamination sheets used when my friend Bill built the boat. I will have to completely strip and replace with mahogany planks so more work but well worth the effort. Pics now posted. The laminated sheets were well attached and took lots of effort to remove.

I am retaining the original colour scheme of mahogany flat surfaces and white for vertical surfaces. My previous restoration had fibre glassed the hull and painted in white. Didn't like the cabin top so this has been reworked as part of the replanking.

Keep going Dave. It will be worth it.

The Sea Commander is my ideal boat size - it comfortably fits into the car, is easy to transport and move, and looks super on the water.

I'll be interested to see your chosen colour scheme πŸ˜‰

The work continues but slowly. Managed to knock my Knee on the stairlift whilst walking down the stairs and have damaged a tendon. Slowly recovering but the cold weather can cause pain so not that much progress. Having looked at and removed some of the thin mahogany veneer I decided to use 1/16 strips to re-plank the cockpit floor and rear roof as I had used planks on the main roof which mainly survived any delamination.
Have now reattached both side panels and just need to make and refix the front windows. Pics now posted.

Still waiting for glue but cut out the side panels. Glad to have a dremel jig saw and Proxxon sander to cut out the window apertures. I will mark out the clear acetate for the windows next before gluing the two panels together and leaving to dry overnight. Still considering how to repair the planking on the roof. I have plenty of mahogany so may slice some thin planks using the bandsaw as I am not a fan of thin veneer planks anymore in an exposed environment.
Good to be back in the workshop and able to build again.

I like the sound of Captain Tolleys Creaping Crack Cure. This is a product I have not come across but it sounds to be very useful. Where did you get it Dave ?

My shed developed a small leak that damaged my Sea Commander. The water delaminated the ply used for the cabin sides. Fortunately just forrard of the cockpit so I was able to just cut out and replace both sides. So far I have removed the sides and the sprung veneer planks on one side of the front roof.
I also need to replace some planks on the other two roofs hopefully by just removing and replacing the sprung planks.
I am using two sheets of 1/16 ply for the sides as this will allow me to recess the windows by cutting the apertures wider on the cabin insides.
Next job is to mark out the windows and cut to size. I can then use the inner apertures to mark and cut the new clear acrylic sheet.
The wood glue I had has not stored well since I last managed to do any building so I am awaiting a delivery from Amazon with fresh supplies.
Pics of progress to date. I will add to the post as I complete further.

My Sea Commander was like that when I got it, the keel, bulkheads and some of the cabin sides had delaminated.

Someone recommended Captain Tolleys Creaping Crack Cure.
    EXCELLENT stuff!!!
I bought some and a couple of smaller syringes and gave it a go, putting clamps onto the areas after applying the product.
The result is, my keels, bulkheads and cabin sides are all solid now.

    Will

Another suggestion for storing your Sea Commander - sweep all that rubbish off the dressing table and put it there !πŸ˜‰

Looking forward to seeing the completed project. Doing a great job of restoring - well done. I had a Sea Commander when I was a teenager. It had a 3.5cc diesel but was very difficult to start. My dad sometimes had to bring me back from the pond without a sail because I couldn't get it to start. Initially it had no radio gear so I put waders on and set it to go round in circles. Eventually I saved up for a second hand non proportional radio set. I also remember I had to have a UK radio license for this set which I think was 17s 6d! I now regret having sold it because it would have been much better with electric motor. It was a lovely model but my bedroom smelt of diesel for days after running it! That was 57 years ago!😊

My fault re the shed roof. When delivered I did consider putting garage roof felt in place of the rather thin felt supplied. Intended to replace after 3 years but was hospitalised and out of action for 2 years so time slipped away. Now covered in rubber sealant and a second coat to be applied when the weather gets a bit warmer and drier.
Good tip Ron and most electronics come with little silica bags so good recycling and free practice.
I do have a lock up container for most of my models apart from those I like to sail so not normally a problem.
A cellar would be filled with wine if I had one! However I suspect the temp and humidity are ideal for storing models.
This is the second time I have restored this Sea Commander as I replaced many of the planks on the roof and deck a couple of years ago. I probably should have replaced the side panels but they appeared OK. Ply once wet does not repair and I should have looked and inspected a lot closer.

I'm so glad you are restoring your boat rather than throwing it away. I can't quite see whether it is the Sea Commander or the Sea Queen you have there. The Sea Queen is about 46" long whilst the Commander is shorter at 34". I restored a Sea Queen a few years ago which gave a lot of satisfaction.
Good luck with your work, and I look forward to seeing it completed.πŸ˜‰

I save the Silca moisture bags and place in my boats around ESC and receiver. Helps to keep moisture from damaging them.
