Hi Steve, I can't get over that hull with its ultra-thin strakes, it has to be the best plank on frame build ever, incredible workmanship and patience. I love its canoe like quality. Regards, Gary.

    Hi Lordgord,

Your whaleboat looks great to me.
Good to hear you have got to grips with posting photo's, I am still coming to terms with the mechanics of this site.

    ๐Ÿ‘Hi Stephen,
Here goes with my attempt at posting pics of my whaleboat (sans knees)
That seemed to go well enough, maybe I shall post more pics of my models in the future!

Holy-moly! that's great work. Iv'e recently had my first go at a plank on frame, a clinker built "Nantucket" whaleboat, I got it completed, including harpoons, lances, oars etc. but never did make and fit the the knees as we were packing to move home. Thanks to your post, I am now inspired to return to the build and finish it properly ๐Ÿ‘

    Hi Gary,
I hope this reaches you, I am not sure of the mechanics of returning a comment on the build blog.
Yes work boat cover may be folded in boat with other gear.
Steam plant installation is going slowly, yes I will make a gas shutoff valve, at present I am not fitting an attenuator valve at this stage, though the flame will be controlled by a servo controlled metering valve yet to be built. I am not sure how an attenuator valve would go with a mono-tube or flash steam boiler. I have purchased a gas regulator from Microcosm to give me a hopfully stable gas pressure.
    Cheers,
    Stephen.

Incredible workmanship Steve, and a beautiful end result, when you attach this to the back end of Formidable LT100 make sure it is the right way up and don't fit a cover. How goes the steam plant installation into the hull? Be on the safe side and fit a gas cut off from Clevedon Steam, and an attenuator valve to save you both gas and water, check out Microcosm China. (A gas control valve working off boiler pressure.) Regards, Gary.

Hi Stephen, and P on F verses Fibre-glass is a bit of a quandary, it is the sense of achievement factor completing a plank on frame hull, versus the time factor of installing a steam engine straight into a completed ready painted hull. As my present build has taken more than three years, because I opted to also rebuild a 1960s motorbike at the same time. I think the Fibre-glass hull is the right way to go as I do enjoy the steam engine installation, and that will be my starting point. I have a 9/16" bore twin slide valve in mind as a very efficient engine, as this is a 48" hull I hope I can manage the weight of the completed boat. Regards.

    Hi Gary,
    Thank you for your encouragement.
From what I can see John Hemmings kit is very expensive, though very nice, would you go for the GRP or wood hull?
Would you use a Hemmings steam plant or build your own?
    Cheers,
    Stephen.

I am pleased to hear you are doing a building blog, and even more so in the fact it will be steam powered. Both myself and plenty of others will be monitoring your progress with interest, and I wouldn't worry about the time factor as it takes as long as it takes, and it's as simple as that. I think your Formidable LT100 has inspired me enough to buy the John Hemmings version of the same, despite the fact it is rather expensive. you are an inspiration young man enjoy your build, I think I can safely say that as everyone is younger than me. Regards, Gary.

    Hi All,
I am going to remove this build blog, I should not have posted it in the beginning as I had intended to write an article for Model Boats magazine, something that is still years away.
I am very sorry if this causes any upset at all, though I hope you may understand that I didn't have a real intention to do the blog, it sort of flowed on from some other messages without me really considering all angles, something that is not normally the way I operate.
I hope you will all understand, I would like to have the story printed.
Happy model boating and stay on coarse!
    Cheers,
    Stephen.

I very much understand and appreciate exactly where you are coming from, as I don't and have never considered doing a building blog. Simply, I don't want to write it down stage by stage and take photographs, I like to build at my own pace and with no pressure. I think your story on the building of Formidable will be welcomed with open arms by the Model Boats magazine and all the luck in the world young man.
