Thanks Martin,
Neat ideas ๐ but since I have 3 spare channels actuation shouldn't be a problem. Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi Doug,
I have been thinking about how you could operate it if you don't have a spare channel and I have come up with some options. Option A somehow attach two micro switches or tactile switches to the dive planes servo arm. Option B Y join a micro servo to the dive plane servo and attach said switches. Option C Add a collet to the dive planes push rod to activate the said switches. The idea being that when you slightly tilt the dive planes to dive the pump will start filling the tank. When dive planes are tilted to surface then the pump will start emptying. In the neutral position the pump will be off, even if there is water in the tank or not. when you ballast the sub in submerged trim keep it with slight positive buoyancy as the ballast water will leak back through the pump unless a valve is fitted to prevent this. I suppose you could call it a safety device! Martin. ▲

Hi Doug,
Looking at the photos of the inside of your sub it might be very difficult. However I do have a suggestion. If you were able to do away with one battery at the mid section, then construct a box using two layers of plastic card and overlap the joints. (Place this where the removed battery area) Then glue one tube in to it(as close to the bottom as possible)for the filling and draining. Then glue a small tube in at the top for a vent hose and run that up to the conning tower. If you are able to mount the pump above the two motors then you run two hoses from that. one to the constructed box and one to the water. It will be a bit tricky but I think it will be possible, obviously after that re-ballast. Just an idea. Martin. ▲

Absolutely Michael ๐
Sub drivers habitually refer to their vessels as 'boats' anyway. In WW2 they were known in the USN as 'Pig Boats'! For fairly obvious reasons given the living conditions on board back then ๐ (smell no evil!) I too look forward to further instalments, esp. re the static diving system! All will be revealed - I hope๐ Could make a great upgrade for my dynamic ๐ diving U25. Pics show U25 internals as is now. Site mixed up the pics๐ Grrrrrrrrrrrrr Pic 1 is midships servo, battery & ESC compartment, Pic 2 is stern compartment (Engine room) with a w/t bulkhead with RFI filter board attached,Pic 3 is bow compartment with RX and w/t bulkhead leading to servo / battery compartment. Will be intrigued to see if I can squish Martin's dive system in here! Ciao, Doug PS ALL subs can dive ................... at least once! ๐ฎ๐ ▲

As far as I'm concerned its a boat that occasionally goes under the water by design not by accident.
I look forward to further installments ▲

Hi Red,
She is static dive. And I hope that this will inspire you to have a go. Martin. ▲

Hi Doug,
The water tight compartment is 70cm Long x 7cm wide. As for the rest you will have to wait and see! Martin. ▲

Hi Martin - is this going to be a dynamic or static dive type ?. Bought a styrene kit years ago after seeing a conversion on it to RC in a US magazine (its small , a type VII U Boat) . Fitted motor etc , tried it out free running in the pool - promptly forgot about it as home life demanded more time. Perhaps you will inspire me to finish if I can find the article. (Had it for at least 30 years - probably more!) By the way that's a very nice engine mount .Good luck with your build

Get the drift so far Martin๐
I suppose WTC is Water Tight Compartment? Dimensions? Look forward to further instalments. Especially regarding the innards. Will you fit a dive tank? If so could be a useful upgrade for my U25. cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi Doug,
For the push rod's I have rubber bellows, and the prop shafts will just by packed full of grease. I think that because this is a mainly module related build I will push this log through as members will probably get bored of it! ▲

Good stuff Martin ๐
How are you dealing with sealing the prop shafts and rudder push rods? In my U25 the prop shafts had rubber 'concertina' boots. Rudder control is via a Bowden cable with another rubber boot where it exits the pressure hull. Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Thanks,
But I am a beginner at this weathering thing. It is not as easy as I thought it would be. I still have more to do but I am sure that with more practice I should get better at it. Martin. ▲

Hi Harvey,
Thank you for following this log I appreciate it. No I did not make them. I was extremely lucky to have a really good friend that supplied them to me. So as for turning them on a lathe that's excellent as long as they are a nice snug fit and not to tight the critical part will be the groves for the O rings as the O rings will be the main thing preventing the water from getting in. Martin. ▲

Hi Martin... just found your blog. Looks good๐. I picked up a pre-owned Gato similar to yours so interested in your progress. Did you make the end caps for the WTC? I'm planning on turning some from 'plastic' rod, on my lathe

Hi Doug,
The bike valve is only to equalise the pressure after the tube has been opened and put back together again. The sub is a Revell 1/72 scale Gato class plastic kit conversion with a few extra modifications (running and navigation lights) I have also done a little bit of weathering on it. Unfortunately weathering is not one-off my strong points but I have a go at it. Martin. ▲
