    Hi Guys,
This log will be more like a slideshow rather than a proper build log as I have no wish to bore you guys to death with all the details.

If you have any questions then please contact me and I will gladly answer them.

The making of the Pike is a lot easier than you may think but please remember that this is the first prototype and can easily be modified to make what ever you want to make.
The photos will tell you most of the story.
I was not to fussy about the first skin layer as it is only to give me something to glue to.
The rivets were cut down dressmaking pins as surggested to me from members on this site.
The eyes were the lenses from some old swimming goggles.

I look forward to answering any questions that you may have.

    Martin.

It is designed for RC but I have to design and make a WTC for it but I keep getting distracted by other things.

    Hi Red,
It would be possible to make it using plastic card.
Maybe a couple of layers for strengthening particular areas.
I think that you could also make it in one piece and then cut it in half along the water line, then add strengthening pieces.
    Similar to the Pike build.

    Martin.

    Hi Martin,
thanks but already have about 4 plans already and an offer of a highly accurate one - which I suspect is a duplicate.

Wanted to make one in two halves - so that you have the required hollow inside - and dynamic diving type - not static .

Would have to start with the 1/2 bulkheads - then "plank" and hollow out . Wood is easy as you can cut through and spot glue back - strong enough to hold its shape and easily removable. Not sure if you could do that with plastic?

Thought about using the type VII U boat as a base - but it would end up too heavy - be permanently submerged .....

Take a look at the (nautilus drydocks)run by Bob Martin. (On utube and on his website)
He might have what you are looking for.
    Hi Martin,
great site , nice model but at $ 1371 would have to pass - works out to R20k which is about the average monthly income which you need to live on as a pensioner. Perhaps I could persuade him to part with a hull only - suspect it would still be out of reach.

    Hi Doug,
BTW; wish we had your grocery prices here🤔 85US$ = about €75. Which is around 20 or 15% of my monthly grocery bill of around €400-500

Worked out with my sister in UK we now pay about the same for food items as she does there- and prices seem to go up every month .Everything imported we pay at least double - cars are a ridiculous price - even locally produced ones have 60% tax added - Imports 100% - fuel exhorbitant as public transport is almost non existent . Miss the bus pass I had in UK ....... .Old age pension here is R1.8k - would not even meet the food bill! However MP's get R90k plus expenses......

    Hi Colin,
Unfortunately no, this will be motor driven.
The tail is just a rudder, and the fins are dive planes.
I would imagine that to get something like this to swim would be quite technical.
But it is something worth thinking about.

    As you wish Red.
But if you're serious about building Memo's Nautilus you ain't gonna find more info and advice than on that disc. And that straight from the Disney horse's mouth. Confusing is that sometimes they mention DVD and sometimes CD!? Happy trawling the Net, I did too, but didn't find a more comprehensive collection of info and data than that. Lots of vague plans, but then what?

Material: "Wood seems an odd material to make a submarine from - so where do you go from there..........." My U25 hull is made from four 3cm planks of wood. Lots of carving and checking with templates and swearing. Then wood sealer, more sanding 🤔 primer, three coats of resin based RAL 7035 paint. Brush quick or your brush will stick to the hull😭
Later spraying upper and lower hull with appropriate Revell enamels, light grey and mid/dark grey respectively. No ingress of water or other damage incurred over the last 25 or so years.😊 Advantage is better thermal insulation from the cold water surrounding the hull than with thin plastic.

"plastic does not like the "African" sun much"!
For several days now we have had temperatures of 35 to 40°C, new record for Germany in June was set yesterday☀️. Expected to climb further to a new record peak on Sunday!😎
I note that today, and the foreseeable/forecast-able future Cape has temperatures of around 13 to 15°C.
I remember being in Jo'burg/Pretoria some years ago towards the end of November. We went to the Zoo with temperature around 35°C and while refreshing ourselves sitting outside the cafe there were astounded to to witness the arrival of a class of young school kids and a Father Christmas wearing the full red arctic outfit with hat and beard. I started melting just looking at him 😂 During my time in Cape Town and Simonstown, also shortly before Christmas, the temperatures were a very comfortable 25 to 30°C. Where are you?
Of course various plastics deform at various temperatures, so 'Taste and Try Before You Buy'.
(With thanks to Savoy Brown - see attached Utube clip😉)

    Hi All,
Martin piqued my curiosity (always dangerous😉) soooo-
Digging around a bit I found this explanation of the number codes (Recycling Codes) on the bottom of plastic food containers amongst other things. See attached pic. Might help with finding the best glue for the different types.
    Cheers, Doug 😎
PS I have no idea what use a 'crushed bottle' might be! 🤔

Hi Martin, if they were food containers I very much doubt that they were ABS!
Cos the three constituents are; Acrylonitrile (possibly carcinogenic to humans), Butadiene (carcinogenic to humans), and Styrene (suspected of being carcinogenic to humans.😮

Most food containers appear to be made of one of these-
high / low density polyethylene (HDPE/LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PETE), polypropylene (PP). PET/PETE you may also recognise from 3D printing.
Depends a lot on which food is going into them. Main thing is that they won't react with the food and/or leach their binders etc into the food 😝 Especially if they get hot; e.g. in the microwave oven!

    Bon appétit Gents 😉

    Hi Red,
I have something in mind but I need to try a few experiments first.

What I tend to do is look at photos and pictures and then think about how I could achieve the end result.

I would spend a long time thinking about something and then suddenly I get the answer then I scribble that down and then you think or I could do it that way instead.
Eventually you figure it out. But then when you try it out you find that it did not work quite as you hoped it would so back to thinking again,

Patience and persistence will find the answer.

    Martin.

    Hi Red,
I am not sure what the plastic is but I think it is ABS.
The thing is I use whatever plastic I can lay my hands on, mostly food containers.

The majority of my models are made from waste materials as I do not have much of a budget to be able to get the good stuff.

    Hi Martin.
whats the basic material - styrene or ABS ? Do you cut it all by hand ? Only found out when trying to cut ABS on the laser that it emits Hydrogen Cyanide gas when burnt !!!!!!!!. Quite glad we have a good extractor on the machine.
Will have to use the scroll saw - not so good on straight lines...........

Some time ago, at the BMW museum shop here in Munich, I bought a kit for an RC (Infrared) car powered by a mini hydrogen fuel cell! Maybe I could use that cell for a self contained sub drive system?? Just like the modern non-airbreathing subs such as the German 212 class.
