Hi everyone I need some HELP HELP!!!. I have been given a hull and I do not know anything about what it is and how to try to build it up. โ˜น๏ธโ˜น๏ธ. I have posted some picture and hope that some of you out there can tell me what it is and maybe show me a picture of how it should look when finished. Hopefully I can add some R/C to sail it. I have only ever been into MTB's and RAF Crash tenders and fast power boats.

OK Gents and our Honourable Lady,
I think we've more than cracked Boatshed's original problem so let's leave him in peace and continue elsewhere ๐Ÿ‘ unless of course anyone has plans or other useful info for his hull.
I'm looking forward to see what he does with it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you for posting that video Doug. Gaff rig at it's best. Reminded me what wonderful craft the oyster smacks are. When I was involved with the Swale Match in the 1970's we always had a good contingent sail across the estuary to compete. Also, it is believed that the oldest sailing craft in the world still sailing is an oyster smack, Boadicea built at Maldon in 1808, yes 1808. She worked until 1938 but has been treated as a yacht since then. She is a bit different to most oyster smacks though, in having a transom stern.
Maybe this will encourage you to rig your hull like an oyster smack Boatshed, you couldn't go wrong if you did.

Going back to the very beginnings of this post and thus very much on subject, looking anew at the run of the counter stern of this model it has much of the Essex Oyster Smack about it. They are still very much alive and kicking and although I don't think they do very much oyster dredging these days there are quite a lot of them still around the Colne, Blackwater area and regularly race together at various Smack races and regattas in that area and even in Kent there is a class for them at the Swale Barge Match. The rig is still the traditional Gaff Cutter so, for model purposes, much the same as a Pilot Cutter. I throw this in, not to muddy the waters even more, but to give you another approach to your dilemma.

Back to the request! My method for hatch as l like to disguise them. After screwing down the cover planks are pressed in ( tight fit ). I use rubber from split wiper blades, & window seal.depending what l have. Of course a square will be easier. You should also get or make the punt.I did post a tutorial here a while back. Note only one oar, always sculled.

Its quite difficult not to deviate ,human nature makes you ask how things are with each other,if memberX has not posted for a while and just happens to mention that he/she has been under the weather then everyone will probably ask(all at the same time)how they are.
BTW the tick box is a great idea,๐Ÿ‘

Re -There are some good suggestions there
Perhaps it could be incorporated in the subject heading box Martin, that way it would be hard to miss, (perhaps in a nice bright colour) OR, when people are typing their subject in, just put
'SUBJECT ONLY PLEASE' OR 'NO CHAT' then we would know not to . Real easy!!???

    Hi JB,
There are some good suggestions there, but human nature the way it is will still pop some sort of quick joke or comment into a thread and then it all starts again.
I think If you had strict rules then the friendly fun side of members will disappear and the site will suffer.
Members will then stop posting and possible move to another site.
It looks to me that the idea of the Tick box is the best way forward.
But as you go further into a thread you may not see the Tick box unless it is somehow transferred so that it is permanently visible.

No worries mate, can see it from your side, but sometimes we just run out of ideas on the subject, and sort of idle along chatting till the next idea comes up. You can turn the notifications off as Doug said if it is too much of a pain. There is a problem, in that if you make a site riddled with strict rules (as with some model clubs) people will not bother to subscribe to it and look elsewhere. I'm sure we all try to keep it down and usually the chat runs out of steam by itself before too long.
Perhaps we could just have a side section called ' Current Chat' with headings on the subject and we could hop to that if something starts deviating? Sometimes the poster may not object to deviation within his/her blog or post and may indeed welcome it.
We could also have a big box at the start of a post ie Tick box for 'open to other chat' or similar. Doug might come up with something, (has to be simple to use)
    Cheers, JB

    Thanks Boatshed๐Ÿ‘

There are two sides to (almost๐Ÿ˜‰) any issue and this is a perennial one despite past attempts to try to educate members how to minimise it. First step being to go into your Account and switch off all Notification settings except maybe Private Messages and Weekly News.
This eliminates constant notification mails about Trending Topics / New Replies etc etc thus reducing the flood to a trickle. One guy a few months ago even demanded that we to stop a thread and continue with PMs! Not possible if more than two are involved cos that's a one to one process.
It's human nature I'm afraid, happens every time a bunch of friends get together.
Guess we'll have to go round the loop again!
I'm considering a post in the Guidance for new members topic.
Once again thanks for your consideration, no apology needed from you!๐Ÿ‘
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I was more than grateful for all the help that was given in the first instance. But as RNinMunich suggested that if anyone want's to deviate ("side plots") then it would be helpful for the person that is asking for help to get as much information as they can. I was getting constant emails come through that were not what the request was asked for. I have made many comments in the past where I have tried to give help but never deviated and made comments taking it away from the original post. I am very sorry for comments on this ask for help that have both upset and offended anyone. But if I had wanted help regarding Maori tooling and beer or fish and chips then In would have gone on the search tab to find what I was looking for on these items. I started it as a build blog assuming that I would get help I now I think realise that starting it in a build blog section was probably wrong to do. I am a long way from starting a build as I need a lot of information on the hull. I am especially grateful for the remarks on going to the library and look for the information there. I must admit that had never entered my head. I haven't been near a library since I left school in 1965. If I had gone there I still would have known what I was looking for until I had been given any idea of what the hull was. Even my friend that gave it to me had no idea of what it was.
Once again I am extremely sorry and hold my hands up for upsetting and offending others on this site.

I would endorse Pugwash1 advice and thoroughly recommend John Leather's book on Gaff Rig. It is the definitive book on the many traditional gaff rigged craft that were once around. Likewise his book Spritsails and Lugsails, details all the traditional craft of these rigs from all round the coast. I checked on Abe Books and there are a number of copies of Gaff Rig available and the price seems to vary between about ยฃ30 and ยฃ60. Quite a lot- but an excellent book.

Just a quick note: as long as there is a library or book shop nearby, I have never had issues finding plans, granted, you will need them bigger than the book, it is easy to get them enlarged and printed. I have an extensive book collection and after a brief look, I can recommend these sources:
โ€œPILOT v2 โ€ published by โ€œwooden boatโ€ and compiled by Tom Cunliff, page 21 has a wonderfull boat called: ELBEโ€
โ€œTHE GAFF RIGGED HANDBOOKโ€ by John Leather. Lots of plans to work from in this book, also put out by โ€œwooden boat publishersโ€
I hope this helps, it is a super hull. Look forward to seeing her in the wet!

I think a number of people here (including myself) have spent time finding photos and giving you suggestions on your model, so I don't think it warrants your comments on a few side thoughts we might skip to briefly. Perhaps contributing ideas is not worth it. Our ideas and help are voluntary, not compulsory, and this sort of criticism might put people off communicating, which I assume is the whole purpose of this site.
Also, it appears that there are a small number of of contributors who seem to be doing all the work so it would be nice to think their efforts and advice are appreciated.

That's what happens when friends get together Boatshed!
I've deleted the most irrelevant posts, including mine, even the one you 'Liked'!
If you want me to dump anything else PM me.

Frankly I'm frequently saddened by the lack of tolerance sometimes shown here.๐Ÿค”
Didn't expect that from you Boatshedโ˜น๏ธ
I find the "side plots" generally interesting and that they also contribute to our knowledge pool. It's also good to get to know the folk, and their interests, behind the "User names" a little better.
Lads and Lasses, an appeal; if you do want to fly off at a tangent to a thread please try to remember to spin it off to a separate thread ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

As far as I can see you did receive quite a bit of help and pointers Boatshed.
Anyway, whatever you decide to do with the hull, good luck and plain sailing.๐Ÿคž
    Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž
BTW: If you want to post as a Build Blog (for later booklet printing perhaps) I would respectfully suggest that you wait until you know what you want to build and then start a Blog under the boat's name or type. Queries, such as yours, are perhaps better posted under the relevant Forum tab; Building Related, RC & Electrics, Hobby Chit Chat, General Resources or whatever.
Folks generally tend to respect an actual Build Blog more and don't go off subject much.

Go with a pilot cutter. Quite a few to choose from. Main & stay sail can be fixed, but l make mine able to reef. Top sail & jib removable. This is so almost all wind conditions can be copped with. Only problem is a hatch as it will be flush with the deck. A rubber seal & 4 screws will serve.l will take photos Monday & post. Moto X mechanic to morrow. No one start on that.

Thanks every one for your comments, but I was hoping for some help on what it was, this I got a possible Gaff rigged pilot cutter. But this hull has nothing to do with Maori beer or tools and saws. This is what was being said on another blog here it went from model boats to cars and all sorts. And fish & chips and The Cottage Loaf pub. A trip to Llandudno and I might learn more by seeing the model of Flying Foam. Even the picture of that doesn't show much of what I wanted to know as it's too far in the back ground.
If I knew how to remove the blog with my quest for help then I would. MANY THANKS, I have learnt more about Maori's and rip saws and tattoo's than I have about the Gaff Rigged Cutter's.๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ™‰.

Thanks for your interest. Irene, a good little sailer in light airs. If anyone is ever in Llandudno North Wales, go for a pint in the Cottage Loaf Inn. There can be found my model of Flying Foam, another Bridgwater registrar schooner. Reason she is there, her original mast & other bits are in corporated in the building

Hi Hammer, I was interested to see, on another forum, all the effort you put into researching and building the ketch 'Irene'. A vessel I have known, or of, throughout my life. As a child, I frequented Barry docks and she was a regular visitor to Ranks Mills. My uncle, who worked on the docks always referred to her as a trow. I saw her advertised, for sale, in a yachting magazine in about 1952 and if I remember correctly, the price was ยฃ2,500. I think the last time I saw her, she was on the buoys in Queenborough, River Medway and that was about 1960. I'd love to see any photos you have of your model.

Hi Hammer, I can admire your efforts into steam, all power to you., I wouldn't mind tackling a paddler myself one day. Thames barges did visit Devon. In their heyday they worked all the way down channel to Cornwall, across to the Channel Islands and the French coast and around Lands End into the Bristol Channel loading coal in the South Wales ports and I remember my uncle who spent all his working life on Barry docks telling me that he remembered Thames barges going to Ranks flour mills there. Barges belonging to the major companies, Goldsmiths and Everards seem to have been principally engaged in this 'down channel' work but I do not doubt many others did their share.

As a footnote, the Thames barge 'Vigilant' is undergoing restoration in Topsham at the moment.

    Cheers,

What an excellent choice of scale sailers in your harbour, pilot boats, a trawler and a schooner, the only way I would improve on that would be to add my favourites, Thames Barges. Traditional sail every time!.

Not exciting maybe not but, it can be very stressful though. Sail boats donโ€™t always go where you want them to go. You have to read the wind, control sails, and TURN! It is not pull back the throttle put the rudder over and off we go. Speeding around is not exciting to me. It takes skill to sail a scale boat, pilot cutters best scale sailers though. 2 pilot cutters, sailing trawler & trading schooner in my harbour. Believe me you will enjoy. ๐Ÿ˜€

There's quite a lot around about Jolie Brise, she was a Le Havre pilot cutter but I believe is now owned by a school in the UK and is seen at many events. As far as Bristol Pilot Cutters are concerned, there are moulded hulls available for several well known ones, Cariad is probably the most popular, so, I'm sure you'd get a sail plan for her quite easily.

Hi Nerys, Thanks for your advice. I will check that out and go from there. As I have said I have never been into ailing boats, just something with speed and Vosper style hulls. I am 69 in a week and still never thought of going for slower style boats. My thoughts had always been that they seem boring and were is the fun and excitement. But I will give it a go once we have finished the decorating that we now need to do. I retired 4 years ago and still haven't finished the decorating so now my wife has said she wants it done so I have just started. then the fun will start to get some boats sorted out to go sailing. Once again many thanks for your help . I would still like other inputs from any one who wishes to contribute any more HELP. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

She looks to me very much like a pilot cutter or similar and if she was mine that's how I'd rig her. Gaff cutter with a jackyard tops'l. Find pictures of a Bristol Channel Pilot cutter and work from those. She could be a very nice boat, I like her..

    Good luck with her,
