Hello, can anyone suggest a wood filler for my Billings Boat St Canute? At present l am using a J.Perkins light weight wood filler but l find that it becomes very powdery and by the time you have sanded down with a very fine sandpaper l remove more of the filler than necessary, is there any other filler out there that l could use?
Appreciate any suggestions that you guys might have?
    Thanks
    Richard

    No sweat Richard๐Ÿ‘
This site is full of us bin there dun that guys๐Ÿ˜‰
"l had a problem trying to plank the stern of the St Canute so l replaced planks with blocks of balsa"
He he!๐Ÿ˜ I did exactly the same on the stern of the ancient Billing fish cutter, Gina 2, I am (slowly๐Ÿ™„) restoring and converting to RC. See pics, there's also a Build Blog on the site.
After rough shaping of the block I sealed and hardened the balsa with Deluxe Materials EzeKote resin. Water based so no hardener, no pong and easy to clean the brush with warm water๐Ÿ˜Š
Then used fine polyester filler, the green stuff in the pics, and a rubber sanding block for fine shaping. When done I applied EzeKote to the whole hull. Dried in half an hour outside in the sun. Then fine sanding 240/400 grade, then a coat of grey filler-primer.
A little finishing filler on the blemishes which always show up at this stage ๐Ÿ˜  gentle sanding with 400/600 wet n dry then on with the white!
Patience is the main ingredient though.
Good luck and much success๐Ÿ‘, Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Thank you Doug, very helpful info and your right l have been sanding the stern down by hand. Earlier this year l had a problem trying to plank the stern of the St Canute so l replaced planks with blocks of balsa, worked well but l now need to refine the curvature of the stern with filler. However you guys have come to my rescue as l resurrect my build having been put to one side while our kitchen was refurbished.
    Cheers and thank you
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
    Little tip re sanding!
I'm assuming you have used the sandpaper by hand!
Then your finger tips will follow every depression and thus take away more filler (whatever it is) than you wanted to ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Use a sanding block (2x1" wood offcut or commercial rubber block from the auto branch) which is big enough to follow the curve of the hull (or whatever) you are sanding without going into the depressions.
Meself, I use a two part polyester fine finishing filler from the auto branch for all larger filling jobs, and on my smaller Plastic Magic projects, or minor finishing blemishes on larger boats, I use very fine Plastic Putty. For possible results see pics: Before and After๐Ÿ˜Š
Hope this helps, Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Go to your local DIY and get the two part wood filler from Cuprinol. It sands really well and is quick, you can mix a small amount and within 10 -15 mins its ready to sand.

    Hi Richard,
You can get an exterior wood filler.
In the past I have used all purpose filler like pollyfiller without any problems at all.

Sticking to hobby shop materials can work out very expensive, I always look for something that will do the same job from DIY shops.

    Hello all...
Throughout the lockdown l have managed to proceed with some pace the build of my St Canute tug, please donโ€™t look to closely at the stern! I replaced the planking with some carved and shaped balsa blocks. The one big problem l have now is some missing brass parts (2off) to the forward anchor winch, Cornwall Model Boats have contacted Billing Boats but to date no luck, if anyone out there has any suggestions l would be most grateful.
    Many thanks
    Richard..

I just looked at this build blog and found the post on fillers.I found a Lepage filler called plastic wood it is a good filler as it can be sanded and fills and builds up well.It dries harder then other fillers but sands down well and can be paint on.
I get it at our hardware stores Home Dept ,Canadian tire .
For me it has worked well.
    Rick
