It must have been in the early '70's when my father and brothers built this model. It had a car blower motor, a home made server to steer (see picture), and my eldest brother built the RC system. We had fun on many boating lakes on holidays in North Wales, and I've decided to refurbish her, and get her on the water again. She was named "Endeavour", as my mother said it took a lot of endeavour to build her! I think I'm going to fit the missing chine and gunwale stringers and repaint her as a Fireboat - of some sorts!
I'd like to go modern with the RC, motor (brushless?) and metal geared servo.
Any advice - particularly on motor sizing would be appreciated. I saw a similar Fireboat on the water at Southport Model Boat Club open day recently, with an 850 motor, which seemed to sail very nicely

    Graham93,
That plan looks exactly like the one I have - only mine is much more yellow! I have 2 other documents - the Building Instructions and "Constructional Details"

Re: There were actually ten versions of the Fire Float (seemingly often erroneously called a 'Crash Tender')

Rightly or wrongly, referring to these as 'Crash Tenders' probably has something to do with this!

Looks like there were only 4 actual designs Doug - 3 specific fireboat types/prototypes - the other 7 based on seaplane tenders - obviously with appropriate water cannon fitted - most of us have never heard of the 55' and 60' versions before - and we are interested modellers.

Whoops - engage mind before opening mouth ........
Thought you were talking about models of which there must have been thousands of versions built including commercial toy types - a scratch built 6' one I saw running in the sea - looking just like the real one - powered by a 25cc 2 stroke motor. But the Fireboats everyone thinks of are 93 & 94 . Strange the fascination with those when they were the only two ever built..............

    Agreed Sub.
There were actually ten versions of the Fire Float (seemingly often erroneously called a 'Crash Tender') ranging from 37.5' to 60'.

The 1/12 scale model was 46" in length not 42", as the real boat was 46ft, 1/12 equals 1" to the foot.๐Ÿ˜

Hi, I think found a post from you around a year ago re a 46โ€ Vosper model, where you said your boat was โ€˜a bit fast at 11vโ€™. Is your boat noisy relative to others?

Thanks Elsrickle. I think you may have the 42" 12th scale model? I only have one motor, and yours seem to be very powerful. I'm hoping not to have any leaks, but am now wondering if my rudder and prop tube will be leaky - Maybe I do a test in the bath!!๐Ÿ˜€

Hi Martin555, Graupner told me to ask a supplier in the UK, or at a Model Boat Club - fair enough, but there are so many different opinions!! - 600 or 850 brushless being the most common. M-troniks recommended their G2 Hydra50, which I quite like the idea of, as they are UK based, and "waterproof". I'll do some comparisons of similar 1400kv motors, but as a beginner, I think it makes sense to use a "matched" system?

I did a refurbish on one I got on eBay
Fitted 2 brushless HPD 2920-4000 with 60a hawk escโ€™s running with 30 mm 3blade props also fitted rubber gaiters on top of rudder shafts as they were very close to the water line and I kept getting water seepage in the stern

I did some searching on the web and found some info on brushless motor sizes and suggestions based on the length of the hull. Needless to say, I can't find it again when I searched today so that I could let you have the link๐Ÿค” It was 4-5 months ago.

I don't know if there are better options, there probably are. I've been lucky as the motor I bought works fine, so I haven't had the expense of having to try a different one.

That will be interesting to see what you get back from Graupner and Mtroniks.
I have made many many model boats and there seemed to be only two ways to fined out what motor for what boat, and that was to experiment or know someone who has already made the boat that you want to make.
Now with the internet and the good members of this site it is much easer.

    Hi Martin555,
Many Thanks for this - I'd not seen that post. I've actually written to Graupner and Mtroniks today to ask for a recommendation, so will see what I get back. It does seem to be a dark art for the inexperienced though!

"How did you decide what size motor to use?"
Now that is a very good question.
I too would know how to chose the right motors for boats.
Obviously it depends on the type of boat that you want them for.
Maybe it is a case of trial and error or is there a formula ?

Yes Peter, It's an Aerokits model - I still have the original intructions - distributor was KeilKraft. Scale drawing says 3/4" to 1'. Original boat was 46ft. I think that must be 1/16 scale? Model is 34 and a bit inches long

Thank you. I've started to look at other blogs, to help me decide how far to go with this one. I'm hoping to do the refurb over the winter, and install the new motor/servo and electronics, then remove, so I can do a better job on the inside, before doing the repair and repaint

Looks like it could be an old Aerokits Fireboat, depends on the size of the boat, what size motor to put in, the one you saw at Southport, with a 850 brushed motor, would probably be a 1/12 scale, but
you can also ket the smaller 1/16 scale.๐Ÿ˜

    Cheers, Peter

    Hi,

Welcome on board. Iโ€™ Currently refurbishing a 34โ€ Crash Tender that I built about the same time as yours.

I have fitted mine with a Turnigy brushless D3536/6 1250kV motor running on a 3S LiPo battery and performance is great. You will need to fit the missing stringers though

So having stripped out all the old equipment - see image of home made rudder servo! - I decided to check for leaks. I used some soup cans for ballast, and after around 45 mins found some water coming up the old 3/16" x 9" prop shaft.
Having asked advice on the forum, I need a new 5mm prop shaft, but will wait until I have the motor, before ordering one. I may need a different length, and now I know I'm opening the hull, I may as well fit a new metric rudder and tube too ๐Ÿค”

    Hi,
I like that old servo system, using that system slightly modified you could control all sorts of things.
