    Hello everyone,
Its been a while since I posted anything but I have been reading all the posts and looking at some fantastic models by everyone! I am in the process albeit very slowly with my Billing Boats St Canute. However I have a problem with the white hull of my Aero-Naut "Diva", I sprayed this white using a Tamiya spray paint about 2 years ago and have noted the gloss varnish I applied to the hull has a tint of brown starting to form, it certainly is not as white as it was!! So I will have to rub this down and respray this summer, the varnish I previously used was Rustins Gloss Yacht Varnish, can someone recommend a gloss varnish that does not start to brown off?
    Thanks everyone
    Richard

I agree Rooky, A great result.
Attached is a pdf of the English instructions I found.
They seem pretty comprehensive, assuming the pic numbers really do match up with the original German instructions.

Übrigens, sollte noch jemand Probleme mit Deutsche Bauanleitung haben, ich könnte vielleicht helfen😉
(By the way, should anyone else have problems with German building instructions, maybe I could help!)😁
    Gruß, Doug 😎

Not speaking/understanding German does not seem to have bothered your building of the "Diva", you did a great job of it.
I used to live and work in Germany many years ago,
but I think I have lost the language, with no use of it for over 25 years, will have to rely on my translator🤞

    Cheers, Pete

    Thanks Pete,

l purchased this one from Cornwall Model Boats. The only problem l had were the instructions, the original instructions are in colour but unfortunately they are in German and due to my miss spent youth my command and understanding of German is a big ‘Zero’. They do supply a photocopy of an English version in black and white but they are not aligned completely with the originals, so it can be a little confusing. Having said all that l found it a terrific model to make, it has challenges but that’s the fun of it.
    Cheers
    Richard

What a beautiful boat Richard, you have a lovely finish on both the varnished wood and the painted finish👍, Just checked with Howes Models, and they are doing a discount on all AeroNaut boats, so the "Diva" is on sale at £79.99, which I think is a bargain.😊

    Cheers, Pete

"I added a couple of drops of yellow to the white paint that i used on my U552 type VIIC submarine just to make it look older,"
Just as well Martin. Gut so! As they would say around here!
I've been on a variety of German (206, 209, 212 and WW2 Type 21, VIIC), Russian (Cold War surveillance sub now in Hamburg Harbour), and US (Guppy class museum boat in Rio) and none had white walls (bulkheads or deckheads) anywhere. In a sub apart from the transverse bulkheads, the one merges into the other😉
Usually a nicotine shade of beige/cream😝 Maybe some wood panelling in the Commander's niche! Light grey or green in the machinery spaces.
I think I've still got some bumps on my nut from the 209s and especially the Russian sub - it was jam packed. Submariners are not normally 6' 2" I guess!
Following your sub interior build with great interest👍
    Cheers, Doug 😎

New kitchen! Tell me about it🙄 Had that a couple of years ago too.
Anyway, you've got something to look forward to - and so do we -
    the Maiden Report and vid😁
    All the best, Doug 😎
PS Here's the link to the Maiden of my renovated Sea Scout with trials report - Just a hint😉

Doug, yup all the upper structures are varnished, the white is only below the water line. I’ve attached three photos of the completed boat, due to circumstances beyond my control ie “a new kitchen” l never managed to sail her as our small pool is drained in October and refills end of April so hopefully this year l will get some fun!

    Hi Tim,
Shame you deleted your original post🤔
Cos everything in it was dead right👍👍
Especially about colours seemingly fading in the distance.
Eventually everything becomes just a bluish grey.
That was the primary reason that the US Navy introduced the 'Haze Grey and Blue Grey' (Gray in the US of A of course😁) in the hopes that they would be more difficult to pick out on or near the horizon. Only worked if the Chief Engineer had his oil burners well under control!🤔 And before radar of course. But the IJN came late to radar so I guess it worked for a while.
So called 'Scale Painting' techniques use exactly the same lightening that you mention.👍

Also your comments about older paints and varnishes is incontrovertible👍
Don't know when UV resistant versions appeared but they are almost ubiquitous nowadays.
After trying various I've learned that the clear lacquer developed for car paint systems is the absolute Bee's Knees (or Cat's whiskers if you prefer🐱) for glass clarity and resisting UV and knocks and bangs.

One thing I learned about it the hard way though: DON'T put it on too thick in one coat and
DO let it dry/harden overnight between coats if applied to a varnished / stained wood surface.
After two years the deck of my Sea Scout resembles a Rembrandt painting, all crazed😭
So this year I'll have to sand and redo - with a bit more patience this time🙄

Used on a painted surface, as the hull and cabin sides of my Sea Scout, this doesn't happen!
The lacquer seems to bond into the paint. On varnish it seems to just sit on top and contract as it dries, or as the varnish underneath dries if not enough patience is applied!
The white and blue on my S SC are still perfect😊 Even after running over a race course buoy at speed! Not a hint of a scratch😊
Which is what Richard wants on the white paint on his Diva😉

Richard: I sincerely hope the only white paint on her is under the waterline and on the cabin roof. Covering that beautiful diagonal planked mahogany hull with paint would be a crime and get you drummed out of the Diva Appreciation Society!!!😮😠

    Hi Tim,
I added a couple of drops of yellow to the white paint that i used on my U552 type VIIC submarine just to make it look older,
Now getting back to the topic the modern varnishes and paints are much better than some of the stuff i used many years ago they keep there colour longer and the varnish when dry is a lot more resistant to knocks and bumps.

Hello Tim, l think my email is a bit confusing although l did mention my St Canute l also mention the Aero-Naut Diva model which has a white hull which is the problem. When l first completed the hull of the Diva it was looking excellent but alas it is now browning off and definitely not looking good so that’s a job for this summer along with the building of the St Canute which is still in the planking stage.... as the Admiral recommended using a car paint lacquer spray from Halfords, which l must visit soon. Thanks anyway for your comments about the St Canute which are all very helpful,
    Cheers Richard

Yes Doug, very similar. The varnish used on oil paintings is a bit thinner, more refined, probably more expensive, and of course I do not know if you would see the stuff I'm talking about in Germany. I used to buy it in Wilkos, their own brand, but I believe the proprietary brands had their version. It worked for what I wanted at the time.

Sounds like the same stuff that Gisela uses on her oil paintings Nerys👍
Protects without adding an intrusive gloss.

In the days when I had a craft business and frequently decorated all manner of articles with painted patterns etc, in order to protect them I found that a water based 'quick dry' varnish did not brown like a gloss varnish. It did not have the high gloss effect of course, but did give a protective surface to fairly delicate patterns. I have some things in my possession painted probably twelve years ago and there is still no browning.

    Cheers, Nerys

    Hi Richard,
Get yourself along to your local Halfords or Auto Supplies shop and buy a can of the clear lacquer used in two-part car paint systems.
It's UV resistant, UV is what is causing your hull to get browned off🤔
The lacquer is also resistant to knocks bangs and scratches😊

I used it on my Sea Scout renovation, also two years ago and also on the Arctic White cabin, and it's still perfect. See attached pics, including materials used.

Yacht varnish is great for wood, which it was designed for, where some browning won't notice or is even desirable. But not good for painted surfaces as you've discovered😭
    Cheers, Doug 😎
