Playing with some ideas for a small boat for the tub challenge. Well maybe not an official entry but I thought I would give a little tub tug boat a try for fun.

Sketch is of current tug idea. Plan to build entirely of styrene as I like working with it, it bends easy and I have enough scrap laying around. Just a simple flat bottom design .

Found a tiny brushless motor 10g that I had from when I built small balsa planes, a tiny ecs too. It seems to work slow enough to drive a prop so I thought I would give it a try. Mocked up a shaft and it spins nicely. Plan to build a small brass prop as well, it will be my first.

Will start in the morning on the hull.

    Go for it Joe,

These โ€˜tub boatsโ€™ are fun to build, use up left over materials, and even give a chance of some sailing while locked down in the house and garden.

I will be following with interest.

    Thank you Joe.
It did not take long to make as the plastic is easy to cut and glue.
After an hour the glue has dried enough for a bit if rough handling.
I think the longest part was waiting for the paint to dry.

I was only able to make it that small because of the control equipment that was going into it.
But that did not work out too well.

    Martin,
I was very impressed with your little tug, especially with how quickly you built her. The sub parts were a great idea, sorry you had the issues...
Mine will not be as tiny as yours as I am limited to using standards batteries and rx. I do have a micro servo for the rudder and little motor as mentioned. Will see how it goes.

Just continuing to have fun while staying home.
Thanks for your interest and comments as usual.

๐Ÿ“ Glue drying - making brass parts

Styrene hull underway, glue is curing....so on to building the small prop and rudder assembly.

Photos show small brass rudder made of solid brass rod and flat sheet. Prop is my first prop build, it's small, 20mm. Build is based on what I found on the web on how to build. Cut out a circle using my small snips. It was easier than I thought it would be and took less than an hour to build. Cut, solder and filed. Those tiny jewelers files come in handy, I use them everyday. Photo shows a size comparison to a 55mm prop and a mastodon.

So if you have not tried prop building, try it. This one is a bit crude, but it's just a start at a new activity for me.

I must admit i have not made that many prop's but the ones i have made have been pretty good and have not shaken the boats to bits LOL!!

Have not, but thanks for the reminder. I am not sure how critical balancing is on such a small prop that is intended to run slow. We will see

Progress on the hull, styrene is easy to use and quick for a build. Had to laminate some thinner scraps to get some required stiffness, not the prettiest job so far. ๐Ÿ™„

Motor mounted, shaft and rudder location in place. More to come tomorrow.

Had to add some detail to the hull to make that thin plastic look better. I used styrene shapes that I had including some squares, rod and rectangle shapes. Shapes bend easy with no heat needed as they are quite thin. Just glued and held as I worked my way around the hull. Only problem was may left hand cramping up...

Quick note, if you do use heat on styrene be careful. I once used a heat gun on a styrene model and it quickly went from normal to melted. My opinion is that hot water (just boiled) is the way to go, just soak until more flexible.

Painted with gray primer and will later finish with acrylic paint brushed.

Installed the rudder servo, found that I had one smaller than the previous one in the earlier photo.

On to some superstructure detail next.

Sketched out a typical little pilot house and machine room superstructure. I then laid the sides on graph paper, wax paper and then gluing up pieces of styrene. This is my typical method of constructing, stick built.

    Skydive,
I enjoy working with styrene, particularly the way it welds together. I just did some float tests on the hull and was pleased...no leaks! All welded seams did the job.

    Doug,
Thanks for the comments and your interest. The little brushless outrunners were purchased about 10 years ago from HobbyKing, 18-11 2000. See link, I see that they are out of stock, was about $10 usd. A better option is the e-flite 180 as seen in photos. It's very nice and sold by horizonhobby.com for $30. See spec in photo- 8.5g ! I say better as Horizon has better quality control, my experience with direct purchase from China is about 1 in 2 work.

As to styrene, in the states we have a great manufacturer, Evergreenscalemodels.com. They have everything and are one of the main suppliers to the hobby shops (not many left) in the states. I just ordered more plain sheet from them direct and received within days, great service.

I always liked the Junkers aircraft design. My great uncle Charlie flew on a Ford TriMotor, (based on JU designs), he said it was extremely noisy and he had to stuff his ears with cotton.

Never seen one that small and light before. Especially as Outrunner.
    Thinks!
I've dismantled some old CD drives, maybe I could use a motor from one of those!?

    Your blog prompted me to check up on my styrene / polystyrol stock;
plenty of sheet from 0.5 to 3mm. Bit thin on the profiles though๐Ÿค”
Mostly very small for plastic 'kit bashing'.
Off to the Krick (online) shop!

Pulled out some little switches from my parts boxes, now how to conceal them. For mounting switches, I always keep in mind several things; access for maintenance/replacement, water resistance and last, concealment. To be honest my biggest problem with concealment is remembering where I hid it after a boat is stored for a while. I like to blame aggressive chemo treatments in the past for memory loss but the reality it's just part of aging. So I laugh and carry on as I am sure you do as well......

Photos show some switches I have. My current thinking is to hide a slide switch under a oil barrel or maybe a bollard. Any suggestions for hiding mini switches are welcome.

    Doug,
I've had some of those slide switches fall apart on me even before the boat hit the water. I decided to go with a toggle, I have a bunch of types in my SS electronics boxes. I have had great success with these, I even left one exposed on my US1Meter which gets wet all of the time. I just put a dab of Vaselene on it every so often, keeps the water out.

    Hi Joe,
I don't trust those little slide switches.
They're always the first thing to go Kaputt in a damp atmosphere.
Ask Ed (Figtree) about his experience with them!

I prefer to hide more robust self-cleaning toggle switches under a hatch.
Attached pics show hidden switches and charge socket on my destroyer.
I first had them inside the equipment box between the two Oerlikons.
But that was a pain in the you-know-where whenever I needed to remove the deck๐Ÿค”

Hull and superstructure paint in progress. Not sure how much detail I will add next. Wiring complete with 4 AAA batteries providing most of the ballast. In a float test it balances well, will need about 1/4 oz toward the bow but will wait until all details are added. Still having fun.

The photos are progress photos and the rudder linkage was not in place at the time. So no, it does not have to be removed. The superstructure lifts off with just the machine room roof pulling up along with pilothouse.

I see you have your rudder linkage above the deck and a removable superstructure.

Looking at the photo it looks as if you have to disconnect the linkage before removing the superstructure.
