Not exactly a blog, just a couple of photos to show progress on my Dutch Schouw. She is 27" long, scratch built from drawings in a book on traditional Dutch sailing craft. She will have the typical Dutch high aspect ratio gaff rig with a short curved gaff. Like a Thames Barge, she has leeboards, rather shorter and rounder than those on the Thames Barge. The rudder too is quite large and could be likened to a barn door. How will she sail? I don't know, but when we get our release, I'll find out.

Ron. That's very interesting, looking through my books on Dutch craft, the Billings kit appears to be a kalmschouw, one of the few built as open boats. but don't ask me what that means. I was also interested to see that Billings at one time did a kit of a Hoogars, which is another one I have plans to build. Thanks for posting the link.

Very interested to see the Billings version of a Schouw. Do they still produce that kit? Traditionally there were several types from all over the Netherlands, and I know a couple had the sprit rig of your model. Mine is taken from drawings of a class of schouw yacht that was built some years ago. The original was called Zilvermeeuw.

It was just a mischievous joke on my part, Nerys. Mr Johnson is relaxing the rules more and more now and I am looking forward to being able to see my grandchildren next week - albeit at a distance. I don't hear anything about the situation in Wales but perhaps your First Minister is being sensibly prudent.
Although you haven't done a blog I'm sure we'd be interested to hear more of how you drew up and constructed your schouw -well I would anyway. All the best, Ian ▲

Thanks Ian. No idea if there's a lake at Barnard Castle, but that's a long way from South West Wales and I'm not sure the First Minister would be very happy if I went that far though it is obviously acceptable for some people. Perhaps it counts as a Freeport or something similar.
