Put a new receiver and speed control in the ship yesterday. It is now ready for the pond later this week. Too hot today, felt like 40 with the humidity.

Quick question. Was she scratch built or a kit?

Don't worry about it Ron, there'd be water on deck with the slightest movement.

    Cheers, Nerys

Doug, A drying out berth was one where you went in on the high water, then when the tide went out you were high and dry. When they loaded you, you couldn't really judge if too much cargo was being put in. Some methods were very roughly measured So, quite often we would have to trim the barge when she floated to get her on an even keel and often she was a bit overloaded. This happened with bulk cargoes, such as sand, ballast, fertilizers etc. Actually, even just loaded to the iron band, as soon as there were anything in the way of waves, we'd have water on the decks amidships.

    Cheers, Nerys.

Thanks Doug, Mr Plimsoll wasn't even mentioned when it came to the smaller river barges. Right at the top of the barge's side, there was a three inch iron band. We were expected to keep that just clear of the water when loaded. Very difficult if you were loading on a drying out berth as we often were. So many a time I've come up Swin or down the London River with water on deck. Don't forget, we were paid by the freight, more cargo, more money. Bigger motor barges, going further afield held a load line certificate which gave them a bit of freeboard. but curiously enough, sailing barges could go any where with just the three inch iron band showing.

    Cheers, Nerys

That was rather my impression as well Nerys๐Ÿ‘
Not wishing to detract from the excellence of the build -
The containers, although beautifully made๐Ÿ‘, look slightly out of place on that type of ship, and the handling crane is missing.๐Ÿค”
Apropos ballasting Nerys; I guess if any one of us has a good 'line' on dear old Sam it's you as a veteran sailing barge Cap'n๐Ÿ˜‰

Why worry about containers, with those hatches she looks more like a general or even bulk carrier. Don't forget, if you want her to look as if she is loaded rather than empty, you'll have to make her float lower in the water. Samuel Plimsoll and all that.

I doubt it will be top heavy, those containers have sections cut out and removed making them very light. I had run the boat last year without the containers but felt it needed something else and these were available. Might not be entirely authentic but its ballast is good.

If she turns out to be top heavy remove the containers and make her a tanker. Nice build though. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
