Very interested in your build of a Norfolk Wherry. I have often thought of building one myself as a present to Alice, who is a Norfolk Girl. I must admit I was thinking of a moulded hull, so admire the fact that you are building from scratch.
Best of luck, I shall watch with interest. Nerys ▲

Hi Jacko,
Good luck with the planking, it will not be easy! Please note before your get too far along with the build, if you are going to sail the model (radio control) then please note you will need provision for a fin /keel slot as barges and wherries will not float upright/sail without one. Don't want you to finish your planking and then have to cut a hole in the hull, for a keel box. Added a couple of pictures of my Dad's Wherry. which also featured in Model Boats September 2018. Kind Regards Roy ▲

Looking good now the work comes.
I would suggest you read everything you can on planking as it takes some preparation. For me the biggest part of learning to plank a boat was keeping the planks in place will the glue is drying. Plank some on both sides this will help keep the boat from twisting if you do some on one side do do the same on the other. You will need to learn how to bend and tapper the planks. Go on line and find video's on planking there are lots of them out there watch and read you will be able to plank this boat. Good luck. Rick ▲

I shall also be very interested to see how you tackle the clinker built hull of this Wherry. Courage bas always failed me when contemplating a model clinker hull, although I did build a 16' plywood/epoxy dayboat hull which used a non-traditional method of setting out the plank shapes.
I expect you have seen/got the John Leather book on Clinker boat building and the NMM produced a very helpful booklet by Eric McKee called Clenched Lap or Clinker. All the best, Ian ▲

I've only ever built small model dinghies clinker built , apart from a few real ones years ago, but I think you will find that 5mm wide planking will be too narrow . Once you get away from the garboard planks, it's surprising how quickly the curve in the planks builds up particularly around the turn of the bilge. Hope you don't mind me pointing this out, but I think you'll need some wider planking. Never mind, some of the 5mm will come in for the decking. Are you having the mast to lower on the big windlass forward of the mast?
Cheers, Nerys ▲

Jacko,
I used those modified paper/binder clips on my ongoing 1M yacht build. They worked well and I used both the medium and small size clips. The small one worked well when the gaps got smaller on the planking. Have fun! Joe ๐ ▲

Hi Nerys,
I hate to be spoil sport and say I have tried PVC pipe myself and found that it couldn't handle the heat, of coarse if you think about the maximum temperature that PVC can handle before becoming soft it is well below the temperature of steam.๐ In the end I made a plank steamer form metal down pipe and an old kettle. I have attached a few photos of my crude though effective rig. Cheers, Stephen. ▲

I don't want to clutter up Jacko's interesting build blog, but the boatbuilders I was working for built clinker built lifeboats and other work boats from about 16ft to 30ft, very occasionally a yacht. Building was on the first floor as was the steam box which was about two feet square and thirty foot long. The fire was on the ground floor with a water tank above and a pipe feeding steam into the box. When it was thought the plank, larch, being steamed was ready, it would be pulled out, rushed to the boat, offered up, clamped and copper nails would be driven through it and the previous plank. Later when the whole boat was planked and timbered, all the copper nails would be rivetted. The timbers, we used elm, would be steamed in the same box.
Cheers, Nerys ▲

That looks like an interesting steamer for planking, what are you using as a heat source? As an apprentice boat builder, it was my job to keep the steamer going when we were planking up a boat. I went round with a wheelbarrow picking up shavings and odd bits of wood to throw on the boiler fire. The process would go on most of
the day and it meant a very clean boatbuilding shop. Nerys ▲

I agree, Dave is the man if your looking for ready made. But it is possible to make your own, if you can find the blog I did on my Thames Barge, I made my own and Iโm pretty sure I showed how.

Try www mastman,co,uk email mastman@btinternet.com
Dave Watts Mastman specialises in bits and pieces for model Thames Barges and other vessels. He does a whole range of blocks in various sizes and qualities from plastic through wood to brass. He is producing his huge range from Thames Barge hulls to the smallest block day and night . If he is out of stock, it would only be for a day or two. I recommend him. Cheers, Nerys ▲

I'm surprised you couldn't find anything in the Mastman range, I've used his working blocks in running rigging quite successfully. Perhaps they were too big for your scale. Pleased to see you are experimenting with mast raising and lowering.

Jacko, I've seen pics of wherries with a white sail but I think they may have been like Thames Barges and sailed around with undressed sails for a while to stretch them, then dressed them later. Yacht wherries usually had white sails of course. I'm following your build with interest because a wherry is on my list of 'boats to build one day'.

I think it looks fine for shape etc. Only thing, wherry sails were black. If it was me, I'd go on Ebay and buy some black polycotton but you may have other ideas.
