Iโve tried logging time spent in the past Mike, and itโs horrifying how much time can be spent whilst neglecting other tasks! I can do more in the summer for obvious reasons I.e available daylight ect, there have been summer days when Iโve done 10-12 hours in a session! Winter not so much Hours and nowadays I utilise weekdays off as my wife Works mon-fri. Weekends I ration my hours so Iโm not being accused of neglect ๐๐
I may try an log the hours on the Tyne, but a ball park guess would be 200-250 hours? ▲

"Do you realise that you've started and completed two boats in the time it's taken me to (very nearly) complete one".
Sy Have you ever logged the actual time you spend on a build? It may give some other builders some hope about how long a build takes, I usually spend 2 hrs on average a day so If I dare I could calculate how long each of my builds take, but I daren't do that as my better half may find out. ▲

That's not so much fun as doing it the hard way Sy...and you know it !! And that's a pretty comprehensive box of bits that you've assembled in preparation for your new build. I suspect you already knew your preference some while ago ๐. BTW. Do you realise that you've started and completed two boats in the time it's taken me to (very nearly) complete one boat.....you are a fast worker !! Me...VV slow worker !! Rob. ▲

I shall try not to disappoint guys! Getting the hull braced to add rigidity and careful positioning of propshafts, rudders, motors, skeg and strakes will be the hardest part. Once the deck is on itโs just a case of making a scratch built Airfix kit....in theory anyway!

Hi there overthesea, my little brushless motors are DY2836 750kv which I buy off eBay for about ยฃ12 each coming from China or Hong Kong. Iโve had a few over the years on small boats and aircraft, work a treat. I normally buy similar or same from (Turnigy) Hobbyking as they are 5 minutes drive away, but most of the stuff I buy from them is out of stock and has been since COVID reared itโs ugly head.
Any other questions please ask! Hoping to do a bit on my Tyne tomorrow as have had other stuff to do today around the house to earn a few hours in the workshop! Kind regards Sy ▲

True most epoxies and resins do give off a temperature when curing and here's the important factor, temperature is related to curing time. I used to use some two part resins on the mines that could hit 300-400 Deg C ( Quick Anchors) If you have a 30 minute resin/Epoxy you will be safe. I have seen Cement set in 20 minutes but we were hitting 700 Deg C๐๐

Hi Martin, the liquid metal is a 2 part epoxy type filler used on car body work. It sets like concrete and is superb on glass fibre hulls for surrounding items that need to be set firm in place like propshaft tubes, rudder posts ect. Iโve never used it on plastic, so will experiment first, however if unsuitable will use P38 instead.
Kind regards Sy ▲

Hi Si all my own work all my metal work is made by me Its the best part of modelling for me. The pick ups are really very simple to make.
The scoop I made for the Police boat was simply a 6mm brass tube filled with solder and then bent round a round bar (60 mm) and then cut at an angle with a hacksaw and filled to finish, the solder is then melted out. A simple brass collar (or a couple of brass washers) soldered on and then its epoxied into the hull, go on give it a go. ▲

Sy,
You managed to bend the tubing in your last project so i am sure you could bend a bit to shape and solder a big washer on it to give you something to glue to. Martin555. ▲

Hi Martin,
yes the escโs will have stand offโs to keep them away from the hull to aid cooling. Iโve not decided yet whether Iโm going to fit water cooling? The motors are a lot more power than required therefore Iโm thinking as they wonโt be worked hard, the escโs wonโt need more cooling than the cavernous space of air in the hull? Iโm sure someone out there will scream water cooling though ๐๐. The other issue is finding nice water pick ups, those horrible black plastic things are not going on this model! Kind regards Sy ▲

I love what you have done so far, but you may think that this a silly question, don't you get interference with the rx antenna being that close to the motors. Cheers Colin. ▲

Rob, that sounds like a good idea? Any chance you could draw me a simple wiring diagram going with a separate Rx battery which I have plenty off along with standard on/off futaba type switch. I would use a simple 2 pole switch for the 2 x fuse to y-lead lipo battery connection.
Kind regards Sy ▲

Sy.
You could still do a two fuse circuit, just use a separate 4.8/5v battery pack for the RX and forget about using the BEC in one of the ESC's. Put in a small switch to power up the RX or use a spare pole on the main power switch, use a DPST type for that. Rob. ▲

Hi Martin, so now Iโm thinking 1 fuse as I hear you about the BEC esc, the other having the red wire disconnected as is the norm. Luckily the boating lake I sail at on Southwold prom is shallow, square and just requires a knee deep rescue if the wind doesnโt bring the model to either of the 4 sides of the square yacht boating lake.

Hi Rob,
I think looking at your logic Iโll go with 2 fuses for protection either side. After all, the fuse holders are pennies and all thatโs required is a little more soldering. If the esc,s are rated at 30amp and knowing they can handle more in short bursts I shall fit 30amp fuses. Although the chances of them blowing on a 2S lipo and considering this model will probably never be sailed on more than half throttle, I doubt the fuses will ever blow unless the prop is fouled? If anyone thinks my logic is wrong please let me know before I make and install the fuse/switch harnes ๐๐ ▲

Hi Rob,Sy.
Having each motor/ESC fused will give you a chance of getting your boat back to shore, but not if the fuse that has the BEC connected blows then you will still need help rescuing your boat. Martin555. ▲

Hi Sy.
Looks like a very tidy installation so far. Having no experience of a two brushless motor & two ESC setup I've never had to consider the merits of a single fuse or double fused configuration before. I suppose a single appropriately rated fuse between battery and switch would protect everything but would totally immobilise a boat if just one motor/prop got fouled whereas a fuse for each ESC/motor would still give you some sort of drive in the same circumstances so perhaps that is preferable? I'll leave the definitive answer to those that had actually done such a configuration. Rob. ▲

That sounds good Sy,
I must admit i went a bit mad with fuses on my HMS Cottesmore, One fuse for each motor/ESC. One fuse for white lighting. One fuse for red lighting One fuse for main gun And i cannot remember what else i fused. I know i went well over the top but it was the only fuse holder i had at the time. One day i will be changing all the wiring to a simpler format as i intend to change a lot so that i don't have to lift or remove the superstructure just to switch it on/off Martin555. ▲

Hi Martin,
I was thinking 2 fuses, space isnโt an issue in this cave of a hull, just need to make a neat box and wiring loom and in they shall go! Iโve taken a screen picture of Robs wiring loom for single motor setup on his pilot boat and shall replicate that finishing in a Y-lead to the lipo ๐ Cheers, Sy ▲

Hi Sy,
I personally would have one fuse for each ESC. Altho you can only have one fuse if you are limited to space. The members with the electronic knowhow will probably put us both right hopefully LOL!! Martin555. ▲
