So, in preparation for my next build which will start early November, I have selected the Sarik Hobbies hull and plan set for the RNLI Tyne Class Slipway Launch-able Lifeboat. At 31 inch length this model will work out at approx 1:18 scale and a nice size to detail and be easy to transport to the lake.

I shall be basing my model on on the Cromer Norfolk boat which had a white hull Below the waterline, common to slipWay launched boats. So far Iโ€™ve just about sourced all I need to make a huge dent in the build including several large sheets of plasticard in 0.5mm-3mm thickness And Iโ€™ve a large box of plastic strip, tube, rod too. I will need to source more brass rod ect for the stanchions and railings and a few other bits n bobs.

Iโ€™ve only managed to find one other build thread on this model and if Iโ€™m honest the builder made a decent job of his. Since finishing my Atlantic 21-75 hybrid, I now feel if have the confidence to produce another model involving 99% Making parts from scratch.

A very big thank you to Martin555 who kindly sent me a pdf of the build as it was detailed many years ago in a magazine. Once printed Iโ€™m sure they will be very helpful in my build......

My boat will have a crew of 3 โ€œStar Wars figuresโ€œ sourced off eBay and at about the right scale, once modified and painted should look the part. So, watch this space for a start very soon, hope you enjoy it ๐Ÿ‘

Iโ€™ve tried logging time spent in the past Mike, and itโ€™s horrifying how much time can be spent whilst neglecting other tasks! I can do more in the summer for obvious reasons I.e available daylight ect, there have been summer days when Iโ€™ve done 10-12 hours in a session! Winter not so much Hours and nowadays I utilise weekdays off as my wife Works mon-fri. Weekends I ration my hours so Iโ€™m not being accused of neglect ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I may try an log the hours on the Tyne, but a ball park guess would be 200-250 hours?

"Do you realise that you've started and completed two boats in the time it's taken me to (very nearly) complete one".
Sy Have you ever logged the actual time you spend on a build? It may give some other builders some hope about how long a build takes, I usually spend 2 hrs on average a day so If I dare I could calculate how long each of my builds take, but I daren't do that as my better half may find out.

That's not so much fun as doing it the hard way Sy...and you know it !!

And that's a pretty comprehensive box of bits that you've assembled in preparation for your new build. I suspect you already knew your preference some while ago ๐Ÿ˜‰.

    BTW.
Do you realise that you've started and completed two boats in the time it's taken me to (very nearly) complete one boat.....you are a fast worker !!

You've really bit off a big piece Sy with this one, it's going to be a lot more complicated than a M slipway kit, but if you can get enough photo's for the boat, that should make it a little easier, I hope๐Ÿคž

I shall try not to disappoint guys! Getting the hull braced to add rigidity and careful positioning of propshafts, rudders, motors, skeg and strakes will be the hardest part. Once the deck is on itโ€™s just a case of making a scratch built Airfix kit....in theory anyway!

RE :- Wouldnโ€™t it be nice if we could put all the bits in a box, add a huge squeeze of glue, give it a shake and out comes a completed model.

As it was a nice mild day with some good ambient light, I was given permission by the Boss to have an hour on the Tyne.

Looking at the hull moulding which appears to be a normal plasticard vac formed moulding, it was a simple task to use a permanent sharpie pen to mark the line clearly moulded ready to cut down. This was followed by a single score cut following the line with a brand new blade in the Stanley handle taking care not to slip and remove fingers! Once the entire circumference had been scored, I simply bent the waste back and forwards with a pair of pliers and voila the deck level cut away from the flash. This will be cleaned up flush not that it will take much once Iโ€™ve put in the 3mmx6mm deck support strips around the inside of the hull and fitted the deck.

Itโ€™s always a good idea to confirm the preferred glues will actually stick! Using a piece of the off-cut from the hull moulding I stuck a couple of pieces together using my favourite Revell plastic cement and it worked well.

Last thing today was to place the electrics inside the cavernous hull just to get an idea of the layout, will be a nice simple fit. Next job will be marking up the hull for the rudders, propshaft exits and P-bracket locations and to make, Mark and fit the slipway skids, tow hook and spray rails......

    Hi Sy.
So not bulkheads in the conventional sense then, I suspect that they will all be fabricated from plasticard so no problems finding a glue that is ok with wood and styrene ๐Ÿ˜.

Indeed there will be about five bulkheads Rob, I shall make them the girder type that I made on my Model Slipway Trent. Once they are fitted as cross members with other beams running from bow to stern, it will be rock solid with the deck on ๐Ÿ‘

A nice steady Sunday start on the Tyne build.....

First job was to mark the rudder post positions and that ended up being the first and hopefully the only mistake for the time being! You may notice from the photos were I drilled the pilot holes for my original position, but on further studying the plan it was soon apparent to be wrong, therefore the holes were re-drilled in the correct position and the wrong holes filed and sanded back.

The rudder posts are supported but a piece of 9mm ply which has been clad with plasticard for neatness. Iโ€™m hoping to use next to no wood in the build, but if I do it will have a plasticard outer. Once that piece was cleaned up it was epoxied along with the brass nuts to the inner hull, should all be nice and water tight.

Next job and the last for today was to mark the positions for the propshaft tube exits and drill those. The 8mm dia brass outer tubes are being supported by plastic tube with 8mm internal dia. Itโ€™s easier to glue plastic to plastic and gives a neat exit out of the hull. The plastic tube was plastic cemented and then given a fillet of epoxy. The P-bracket is simply another piece of plastic tube and plasticard, it doesnโ€™t offer a lot of strength but is more in keeping with the scale appearance. At the moment the brass propshaft tube will remain lose for final adjustments, drilling for the oiler ect but will be epoxied in when ready to fit permanently to seal it. Once all the propshafts ect are fitted I plan on making a box to surround the plastic tubes inside the hull which will be filled with โ€œliquid metalโ€ to make that area stronger, then the whole area will have a covering box over it which will house the rudder servo for a neat finish.

Tomorrow will see the other propshaft fitted, boxed in as described then start to make the motor mounting items.

there is 2mm of clearance on the prop, I had a 2mm spacer between prop and keel whilst glue on the P-bracket was setting . The plan calls for a 40mm prop, so measurement ensued, but all is clear and well ๐Ÿ‘

Just a few hours of work over the last couple of days in between other tasks in and around the house.....

Both propshaft tubes are now fitted and correctly aligned looking from all angles. The brass tubes will be epoxied in once Iโ€™ve made the motor mounts and coupled them for correct alignment. Once the brass tubes are in there final position, Iโ€™ll box around the brass tube just behind the oiler and fill the box with liquid metal to ensure everything is rock solid and watertight.

Iโ€™ve made the servo box from 2mm plasticard with internal bracing for reinforcement and once that was cemented and solid, made up the pushrods from M2 threaded rod and metal crevices for a nice slop free connection.

Thatโ€™s it for the next few days as on shift till and including Friday, more progress at the weekend ......

Hi there overthesea, my little brushless motors are DY2836 750kv which I buy off eBay for about ยฃ12 each coming from China or Hong Kong. Iโ€™ve had a few over the years on small boats and aircraft, work a treat. I normally buy similar or same from (Turnigy) Hobbyking as they are 5 minutes drive away, but most of the stuff I buy from them is out of stock and has been since COVID reared itโ€™s ugly head.

Any other questions please ask! Hoping to do a bit on my Tyne tomorrow as have had other stuff to do today around the house to earn a few hours in the workshop!

    Kind regards Sy

    Hi Skydive130
I see you are using brushless motors. Can you please tell me what they are? I have a partly built Tyne, which has been sitting on the shelf since they started selling the plastic hulls, and would now like to finish it. Have been following your built blog and am very interested. Thank you.

True most epoxies and resins do give off a temperature when curing and here's the important factor, temperature is related to curing time. I used to use some two part resins on the mines that could hit 300-400 Deg C ( Quick Anchors) If you have a 30 minute resin/Epoxy you will be safe. I have seen Cement set in 20 minutes but we were hitting 700 Deg C๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Hi Martin, the liquid metal is a 2 part epoxy type filler used on car body work. It sets like concrete and is superb on glass fibre hulls for surrounding items that need to be set firm in place like propshaft tubes, rudder posts ect. Iโ€™ve never used it on plastic, so will experiment first, however if unsuitable will use P38 instead.

    Kind regards Sy

Trying to work on poor light is a pain, todayโ€™s weather has been dire and I hate working in artificial light, but we press on!

The motor mounts were made from 3mm plasticard and I used my home made rigid coupling to ensure everything lined up before cementing in the mounts. Theyโ€™ve been braced on 3 sides and internally so should be strong as needed.

Next job was to make a supporting platform which the Esc,s will be fixed too and a raised box to house the receiver. My reasoning behind making a raised box for the receiver is two fold, first is to minimise interference from the motors and escโ€™s and importantly, to get the receiver above the waterline in the worst case scenario of the hull taking on water! Point to note is the receiver box is in rough form at the moment as hasnโ€™t set and requires itโ€™s final clean up before glueing to the tray.

Eventually, forward of this tray will be the battery tray and any ballast required will have bespoke plasticard boxes made and installed either side of the central trays in whatever position is required to get the correct ballast on the waterline.

    Thatโ€™s it until Friday......

Hi Si all my own work all my metal work is made by me Its the best part of modelling for me. The pick ups are really very simple to make.
The scoop I made for the Police boat was simply a 6mm brass tube filled with solder and then bent round a round bar (60 mm) and then cut at an angle with a hacksaw and filled to finish, the solder is then melted out. A simple brass collar (or a couple of brass washers) soldered on and then its epoxied into the hull, go on give it a go.

    Hi Martin,
yes the escโ€™s will have stand offโ€™s to keep them away from the hull to aid cooling. Iโ€™ve not decided yet whether Iโ€™m going to fit water cooling? The motors are a lot more power than required therefore Iโ€™m thinking as they wonโ€™t be worked hard, the escโ€™s wonโ€™t need more cooling than the cavernous space of air in the hull? Iโ€™m sure someone out there will scream water cooling though ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. The other issue is finding nice water pick ups, those horrible black plastic things are not going on this model!

Iโ€™ve had a few admin task this last few days with things like sorting dads house, putting it on the market for it to sell for full asking price same day....

Anyway, Iโ€™ve got some time spare so will push on. Today has seen the esc connectors soldered and hooked up to a 4S I had available on a Y-splitter to check rotation direction ect. Word of caution, this model will sail on a single 2S, if I was to run it on 4S it would shift across the water faster than Campbells โ€œBluebirdโ€ on Conniston Water!

The escโ€™s are mounted on spaced platforms with 3M double sided pads and a zip tie and Iโ€™ve started to fit the water cooling pipes. Everything will be neatened up once everything is in its final resting place. All Iโ€™ve got to do now for the cooling is drill the water outlet holes in the transom and find a suitable place for the pick ups behind the props. I shall hopefully get the prop tubes glued and boxed in tomorrow along with the battery tray and finalise the wiring and pipe work fixings.

A question for you wiz kids on all things fuses!?! Do I need to add 1 fuse to protect the escโ€™s or 2 fuses 1 for each esc? Can I presume the flow diagram would be motor-esc-fuse-on/off switch-battery? Once I know the answer will also build a mounting box for fuse holder/holders and switch. Cheers in advance for your input guys ๐Ÿ‘

Rob, that sounds like a good idea? Any chance you could draw me a simple wiring diagram going with a separate Rx battery which I have plenty off along with standard on/off futaba type switch. I would use a simple 2 pole switch for the 2 x fuse to y-lead lipo battery connection.

You could still do a two fuse circuit, just use a separate 4.8/5v battery pack for the RX and forget about using the BEC in one of the ESC's.
Put in a small switch to power up the RX or use a spare pole on the main power switch, use a DPST type for that.

Hi Martin, so now Iโ€™m thinking 1 fuse as I hear you about the BEC esc, the other having the red wire disconnected as is the norm. Luckily the boating lake I sail at on Southwold prom is shallow, square and just requires a knee deep rescue if the wind doesnโ€™t bring the model to either of the 4 sides of the square yacht boating lake.

    Hi Rob,

I think looking at your logic Iโ€™ll go with 2 fuses for protection either side. After all, the fuse holders are pennies and all thatโ€™s required is a little more soldering. If the esc,s are rated at 30amp and knowing they can handle more in short bursts I shall fit 30amp fuses. Although the chances of them blowing on a 2S lipo and considering this model will probably never be sailed on more than half throttle, I doubt the fuses will ever blow unless the prop is fouled?

If anyone thinks my logic is wrong please let me know before I make and install the fuse/switch harnes ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

    Hi Rob,Sy.
Having each motor/ESC fused will give you a chance of getting your boat back to shore, but not if the fuse that has the BEC connected blows then you will still need help rescuing your boat.

    Hi Sy.
Looks like a very tidy installation so far.

Having no experience of a two brushless motor & two ESC setup I've never had to consider the merits of a single fuse or double fused configuration before.

I suppose a single appropriately rated fuse between battery and switch would protect everything but would totally immobilise a boat if just one motor/prop got fouled whereas a fuse for each ESC/motor would still give you some sort of drive in the same circumstances so perhaps that is preferable?

I'll leave the definitive answer to those that had actually done such a configuration.
    Rob.

    That sounds good Sy,

I must admit i went a bit mad with fuses on my HMS Cottesmore,
    One fuse for each motor/ESC.
    One fuse for white lighting.
    One fuse for red lighting
    One fuse for main gun
And i cannot remember what else i fused.
I know i went well over the top but it was the only fuse holder i had at the time.
One day i will be changing all the wiring to a simpler format as i intend to change a lot so that i don't have to lift or remove the superstructure just to switch it on/off

    Hi Sy.
Sorry to hear that you've lost momentum on this build, sounds like you have some more pressing matters to attend to. I sincerely hope that you manage your way through your present concerns and return with renewed vigour in the New Year.
Kindest regards to you and yours.
    Rob.
