Well its taken about a month mailing lots and lots of e-mail's I now have planes of a Norfolk Keel from @norfolk.gov.uk
named "Dee Dar" built about 1790 and was reshaped twice and sunk 1890 she was 54ft 55ft and about 18ft wide with a 3ft hull

Very pleased to hear that you have managed to acquire the plans for a Norfolk Keel. Is she very much different to the Humber variety? I know that they carried the squaresail like a Humber, but did they ever stretch to the topsails and topgallants?

    Cheers, Nerys

well plans enlarged and drawn but looks like i might have to redraw them as they don't look right i just wonder if the plans i have might be as the ship was found and not built so will tweek the plans remember she sat for about 100 years as a bank support filled with dirt/sand/stone

No doubt you have studied the plans of the Humber Keels quite thoroughly. Are they in your opinion very much different from what you can conceive from you newly acquired Norfolk Keel plan. I can't imagine there is a lot of difference, so wouldn't it help to use what you know of the Humbers when redrawing the plan for the Norfolk.

Yes Jacko, the lines you have are most likely of the keel as she was found, so I am sure you are quite able to fill them out and make them look more realistic. I look forward to hearing all about what I am sure will be a very interesting build.

I bow to your superior knowledge of keels, Jacko, both Norfolk and Humber. Thank you for posting plans of both types, very interesting. I wish you luck in building your project.

I think you will need two servos, with a sheet and line going to the end of the yard on each side. You will be able to join these together so that you only have one line going to each servo. I base this on my knowledge of Thames Barges where the main sheet and the vang (A line going to the top end of the sprit) are joined and come to a servo. With a square sail this will have to be duplicated in order to give the sail a decent shape. The real keel would have had separate lines, a sheet on each side and lines going to each end of the yard. You can probably make this out in your photos.

so it starts this is it so for next will be starting the planking this has been a pain so far in just trying to get the info on a boat built in 1888 and local to 1 region of the UK the Norfolk Archaeological unit have been a great help, so here is a bow / stern shot of progress

Looking at your keel again, I think it very interesting that the hull side planks finish in the gunwhales rather than the stem. I vaguely remember a racing dinghy, many years ago, like that and they were reverse clinker. Looking at the rigging, it looks as if the mast is more or less amidships with a tackled forestay and backstay, I wonder if the mast would lower down both ways? Looks as if she is loading bundles of reeds. I note that the man in the small boat laying alongside is sculling with one oar over the stern. Interesting that there's a cabin top at the forward end rather than the stern.

That's probably the best photo I've seen of a Norfolk Keel, amazingly clear. Should be a great help to you. You were lucky to get hold of that. The rigging details are good too.

Must say that as a Norfolk Man, living near to the broads for many years and having holidays and learning to sail on Wroxham Broad I had never heard of a Norfolk Keel Boat until your article. Was forced into exile to Essex and Suffolk with my job but still go back for holidays and to refresh my accent.
Good luck with what looks like a demanding build.
    Regards
    geoff.

I must say that I admire you in taking on a boat the full size version of has not been seen for, what , over a century, building to plans that are admitted to be not exactly accurate as they were drawn many years after the boat had been hulked and probably been forced out of shape. Not even as if there is anything similar around the coast to get ideas from. And capped by the fact that the rig is not one normally used in models of inshore sailing craft.
So, good luck to you, hope it all works out well for you and in a few months time we see pictures of her happily sailing along.

    Cheers, Nerys

Colin this is the bow section as the cabin is in the bow and not like a Thames barge which is in the stern

That's looking good but I would have thought there would have been some stringers, at least along the top to keep the hull straight whilst planking.
