Hi Doug,
Whoa there! I contacted the secretary of the Porstmouth Model Boat club and asked the same question i.e. Black Powder. They answered politely and promptly that unless you have a home office licence for Black Powder (you may have one), then it is liable to get an arrest carried out under the laws regarding explosives i.e. Terrorism offences! That put me off rather a lot, I don't think Her Majesty's Home Office will consider a one armed, electric motorised guy would be a safe candidate for an explosives licence! So we'll see how the thunder flashes work in reality (might give a reasonable effect?). All the best Andy ▲

Hi Doug,
Much appreciated - 385's sound like a much better idea. I like the idea of sitting her on Newquay lake and watching the wake go by and an extreme scale rate of knots! Cheers Andy ▲

BTW Andy,
"3 * MFA 380's might be ok." If I were you I'd go for the 385s. They are the 5 pole version of the 380 and give much smoother starts and more torque to get a heavy boat started. Which with all your special effects I suspect it might be!๐ฎ Two 385s on 12V (2 x 6v SLA) in my 107cm Type 1A U Boat make most RTR so called 'Speed boats' look very silly ๐ Will be watching your progress with very great interest. Can't wait for the Sea and Weapons Trials!!!! Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Man! You've sure got a full menu there Andy!
More power to your elbow ๐ I'll be following your blog with especially interest- A) Cos I have two 1/72 plastic kits (Airfix and Revell) of S / E Boats of slightly different types, which I also want to convert to RC, B) Cos I've been contemplating similar torpedo and depth charge launching systems on my 1/72 destroyer (1.35m). Have been contemplating experimenting with black powder for the D/C throwers ๐ฅ! Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi Bill,
Yes, I do remember and I also remember the envy I felt at your incredible work! (Is that envy or just awe of a great builder?) Any photos would be very gratefully received, I've looked on line and the details for the S38 seem limited to wartime images (obvious really!), but nothing like the great 'Flower class' book I bought that had all the dimensions and details I could have wished for. Take care Andy ▲

Hi Andy.
I hope you are well. If you recall we chatted about 10 months ago re Flower Class Corvettes. If you check your Private messages you can refresh your memory. We also spoke about the Schnellboat of which I have built one. I do have many pictures and am more than happy to send them onto you if you wish. Some are shown in my boat harbour if you have a look. Happy to help if you wish. Good luck with the build. Regards Bill. ▲

Very glad to help Andy,
especially in a 'bin there dun that' (and spilt paint on me T shirt๐) case. You're right about the price, esp compared to Colour Coats; Lifecolor 22ml for 3 quid, CC 14ml for 2,50! And the Lifecolor thinners comes outa da tap ๐ Good luck to Amy with the guard rails, good for her ๐ Make up a little wooden jig to hold the bits in place for soldering. Check out the Pilot Boat and Lifeboat Blogs on here; there's some guys who are masterful at making railings. robbob, mturpin, Graham93 and Skydive130 to name but a few of the best. Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Doug - You are a star!
Many thanks, indeed in this kit the hand rail would stop lower depressions (or greater depression for the crew mates!). Will remake it in copper wire, there's nothing really wrong with the kit version, but Amy's learning soldering up hand rails so it's great practice. As to the paints, I am indebted. As you say, the DKM Hellgrau seems ideal so will be ordering the Lifecolor Kreigsmarine Set 1 in the morning and at ยฃ17.99 it seems a steal. Many thanks Andy ▲

Hi Andy,
To your questions; #1: Since the guns on an S Boot were primarily for air defence I believe that they could rotate full circle. However!! To prevent them destroying their own upper-works, never mind shooting the crew ๐ค๐ญ, there were guard rails fitted to limit the depression over an arc covering the superstructure. I just checked in my Revell 1/72 kit and the guards are supplied. Apropos my Revell kit ... Question #2: For the gun mounts Revell specify a 50/50 mix of DKM Mittelgrau (Medium Grey) and White. Which sounds to me like the DKM Hellgrau - Light Grey. I often use LifeColor acrylic paints for warships as they are very true to the original. Here are a couple of links to sources of the LifeColor DKM paint sets in UK. #1 Basic surface ship colours, ▲

Hi Andy,
How did the painting go? Anything to show? Or did you blow yourself up or shoot yourself? ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ค Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi Andy,
you are doing a great job. I like all the plans you have for this boat. I am not sure about how far the gun rotated but on my Mine-hunter i made the main gun servo rotate 360 and with the aid of two microswitches as limit switches i made it rotate from from the port bridge wing all the way round to the starboard bridge wing. I have put the link to my build log here just in case you wanta to see it in operation. You will have to scroll down a bit to find it. Martin555. ▲
