Here we go then. My first Blog on my Sea Queen build which I purchased 2nd or 3rd hand yesterday off Facebook Marketplace. Lots of work in front of me and this is the 1st model Iโ€™ve ever tried to restore so please be patient lol. Got some shots of the internals now. Hoping to get back sanding the hull tomorrow. Wifeโ€™s had me painting the Garage today ๐Ÿ™„

    Good practise Simon ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰
So far so good, at least you're getting through the elbow grease part.
Heading towards the fun part - Masking ๐Ÿค” but then Pssst psst psst new colour spraying.
    Yeee Haaa! ๐Ÿ˜
Patience is a virtue - AND a definite asset when restoring vintage wooden model boats!
Ask me how I know ๐Ÿ˜ then ask Colin ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

That looks like a nice solid and quite clean example you've bought there. Mine had delamination of some bulkheads, not too bad a job to fix though.
What's the plans regarding propulsion, electric, or i.c?

That's a good start to your project, doesn't look like there's any delamination so far and the interior is too clean to have had a diesel or glowplug engine so I think she had a large water cooled electric motor.
Depending on the motor and esc you decide to fit the water pickup and outlet may be useful. I often use water cooled excess.
Keep it up shipmate, cheers Colin.

Good start getting things apart and ready for sanding. For me taking on a refit job can be more work than starting from new non the less it is satisfying when done. Enjoy the process keep us updated .

    Hi Simon.
Well done.your into the blog section.
Good to see some interior pictures.
You clearly have a good deal of space to play with.
Clearly the boat was fitted with a non electric motor as we can see the water cooling intake behind where the old prop was.
You have a lot of remedial work to do by the look of things to make good after removing the water intake etc.
Looking forward to the next update, but this is a lovely project.
    Regards Bill.

More sanding today. Ive taken off the rubbing strake thing on the side, sorry if itโ€™s the incorrect description lol. Most of the windows are out and the portholes are now out.

So now I will sand everything up top and start filling once done. Then Iโ€™ll move on to replacing the wood thatโ€™s been removed. Their are loads of little panel pins and tiny flat head screws in this model, itโ€™s been put together well. Now, do i re pin or use epoxy ?

Done a bit more sanding and repaired the hole in the hull. Ive also test painted inside one of the bulkhead sections. Iโ€™m going to spray the hull this week in primer and see how it comes out and Iโ€™m thinking of having a go a planking the hull. Simon style so heavens knows how it will come out ๐Ÿคž

Well explained Doug, I agree with you on flaking car body filler. Using a fine grade polyester putty is easy and cleans up well.
After 30 plus years renovating basket cases I never try for perfection as it removes the history of life from the model.
    Cheers Colin.

    Hi SiFi,
    Afraid I can't endorse Seapray's advice re
"Try and get the P 38 when it is really soft and spread a thin layer all the way along the model like a new skin."
If you do that you'll be working backwards.
You'll end up with more defects and sanding to do than you have now.
Not only that, thin extended layers of filler have an irritating habit of flaking off over time, especially if they get knocked and banged.
When I get to the stage that you have I use a very fine plastic putty, such as Revell, for the very small defects. For the larger ones, such as your screw heads I use a very fine polyester finishing filler.
Check out my Sea Scout Jessica and Fish Cutter Gina 2 for examples of hull restorations - with generous dollops of patience as the main ingredient! ๐Ÿ˜‰
Oh, and b4 I forget; apply filler with an old credit card - nice and flexible fills small pits and cracks easily without too much excess to have to sand back, and to boot it's easy to clean when the filler is hardened! Just flex it ๐Ÿ˜‰
I rarely use an electric sander, and then only in the initial stages for shaping/flattening off the hull, or removing old paint etc, before any filling or priming commences.
During priming, finishing filling, painting I use Tamiya wet/dry sanding sponges, in grades from 180/240 up to (or is that down to?) 3000 before the final lacquer coat.
However you do your hull try to enjoy the process, you'll learn more๐Ÿ˜‰ and don't forget the patience ๐Ÿ‘
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Keep using the P 38 tackle each hole and imperfection separately. You just need a very light spray of primer/filler each time till you see the holes and imperfections are smooth. Once this is near enough perfect ( if there is such a thing) Try and get the P 38 when it is really soft and spread a thin layer all the way along the model like a new skin. Hopefully you have a little electric which helps a lot

I.ve been using P38 for years. you don't really see the holes and rough surfaces till you spray with primer. then start again rub down and spray, I've also used a filler primer all got from Halfords. If its really rough I use a small electric sander. Sometimes its best to concentrate on the worst areas first.

As far as filler I have used car bondo and wood filler products. The best I can say is to be able to sand to a smooth finish using fine sand paper. The finer you use will
give you the best result.Start with a low number 100 grit and move up to 1000 or more. The finer you go the smother the finish will. For me it is time and patents.

Cheers Doug and Colin, Yes I feel like itโ€™s coming along now. I used Tou Pret fine surface filler and followed all your advice on sanding grades. Itโ€™s by no means perfect but as Colin said Iโ€™m going to try and keep some of its character. Ive masked off her name as Iโ€™m going to keep that and sort of build a small frame round her name ? Just waiting for a dry day and Iโ€™ll put on a coat of filler primer and see what that looks like. Then Iโ€™ll take it from there. ๐Ÿ‘

Been a while but Iโ€™m slowly plugging away on the Old Girl. Put on a bit of decking, nothing fancy just something I thought Iโ€™d have a go at and see how it come out. Ive put some stain on and varnished the superstructure. I havenโ€™t gone mad as Iโ€™ve tried to keep some of the marks. Also fitted the rubbing strake, I was pleased with how that come out.

Up next is painting the hull, adding the fittings, then onto fitting a motor and so on ๐Ÿ‘

My Sea Queen is still sitting on the shelf under the workbench in the Boat Shed. She's been there for about 6 year's. The Sea Commander is on another shelf at the end of the shed. They cannot see each other' if they could I think they might have some harsh word sto asy about me. A bit like my wife, "There are so many boat's in here and none of them seem to be getting anything done on them. Oh No he's only gone and bought another one". Just as well the one's in the shed can't see the other four in the house. And the Lady wife is not too happy about that either. ๐Ÿšค๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ I think she thinks that I call boot fair's Boat Fair's because I have bought five from them. and I even got HER to pay ยฃ20 for one for me. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Thanks Nerys, Yes she has been well built so itโ€™s been fairly easy so far. Iโ€™m just doing a bit here and there between work. This one was destined for the skip before I got it. Itโ€™s a shame a lot of them probably end up that way.

    Cheers

Cheers Colin, yes sheโ€™s coming along nicely now. Ive taken out the old rudder and got a new one ready to fit. Just hope she doesnโ€™t leak on her Maiden ๐Ÿคž

    Cheers

That's a good restoration you are doing on that old SeaQueen. She's beginning to look quite respectable. These old boats are well worth restoring and you'll have a boat to be proud of when she's finished.

    Cheers, Nerys

That's a really sympathetic restoration you are doing, well done.
These old aerokits models deserve preservation.
    Cheers Colin.
