    Hi One and All

Now that I have finished the Wacht am Rhein I need a new project, I have the MMM Lady "T" that I have had so long that Nelson had both eye's when I got her, but I fell that some thing that will not take me a year or two to finish is needed, so I have decided to start on the Guardsman, again this will not be a step by step build just me rambling along doing my thing.

    Hi One and All

Have just come off the phone to Steve of Model Boats Bit's, I have placed an order with him for a 7" x 4mm shaft, 385 motor with a set of couplings to fit and a Medium Brass Rudder.

He said that they will be in the post tonight, so should have them some time next week.

So here end's the first instalment.

    hi Fred

Have you given much thought of how you are going to construct the hull? I know the original was bread and butter balsa. Then, I believe, they came up with the vac-formed hull.

When I built mine I used the templates for the shape of the hull that is given in the plan to construct frames. I planked the hull.

Lovely little model they are to sail. I have sailed mine in many a steering competition. The only thing I had to do was make the rudder larger - as - it didnt respond to helm in reverse and it just decided which way it was going to go by itself.😁

    Hi Nerys

    Thank you for your comment,
As for tall funnels I just felt that the early type of work boats are a bit more appealing, but saying that I do have a more modern tug, along side three Oil Rig supply Vessels that are in stock to be built at some time.

I did like your 'Wacht am Rhein' and I expect you will make an equally good job of 'Guardsman', I think you must have a penchant for tall funnels.

    Hi One and All

First of all I will answer John's question yes I am using the
vac formed hull, as I do not want to take too long on this build like my last one.

Yesterday (Monday) all the parts that I ordered from Model Boat Bits came in the post.

My first decision was not to cut off the waste, The reason I did this was that I felt that it would give me a more stable platform for when I was cutting out the rudder post and the prop shaft, I then moved on to cutting out the keel, now this fits into a grove in the hull, to make the keel more stable I put three 2.5 mm nylon bolts through the hull into the keel, I also cut some dragon teeth into the part of the keel that is glued in to the hull grove, I used a new to me epoxy from Devcon, it takes up to 12hrs to fully set. I also cut out part of the keel to take the prop shaft for when it was time to cut through the hull, Last thing was to glue the keel onto the hull and tighten up the bolts.

All being well tomorrow I will start cutting the rudder into shape.

    Hi One and All
Well I have spent some time reshaping the rudder into the shape as per the plans, have I done the right thing? John said that he made his rudder larger as it did not respond to well going astern, so I may just have to make an extension to the rudder at some point in time.

As I had made the cut out for the prop shaft in the keel, I now cut out the rest of the shaft tunnel and made the breakthrough into the hull, I have just placed the shaft in the hull to see were the moto mount has to go, but first I will fix some ply so that when the time comes I will have a base to fix the battery and any other items that need to go into the boat.

I moved onto making the hole for the rudder post, now when I tried the rudder post it put the rudder out of place, so that has gone out the window, so in the next week I will have to go to my local model shop ( Sussex Model Centre) to get some brass tube to fit and make a new rudder post.

Well that is it for the time being.

That's a better rudder Colin - bottom example is more suitable - could easily be shaped like the kit one - both balanced rudders which place less strain on the servo - not sure they would help with reversing unless they are bigger than the kit one. Fully agree with not using the plastic shaft type - sooner or later its going to shear and sods law says it will be at the worst possible time...........

Hi Fred, having turning in reverse problems in the past I have tried various methods and found that if you have a section of rudder ahead of the pivot shaft it improves handling immensely.
Also the rudders supplied with the black plastic tube are a pain so I discard them in favour of brass tube as supplied with Robbe rudders.
    Cheers Colin.

    Hi Redpmg
Thank you for your comments, you are not the first to comment on the size of the rudder of the Guardsman, so today I will have a look at trying to making mine a bit larger but to look the same as the drawing.

I used you method when I made the rudder for my Lady "T".

Good modelling so far Fred - however you probably will need an extension on the rudder for reversing if you want the Guardsman to turn properly - my Lindberg Tug for instance with a scale rudder will only reverse to the right without one - with a slip on extension it goes both ways easily . Presume it has something to do with the rotation of the prop. I leave it off most times as the tug turns on a sixpence - as its only13" long. With the size of your boat however think you should enquire as to how much larger the rudder was made before you finally fit one - much easier to fix at this stage . I used a shaft of brass with lamination's of wood either side with two pins through the shaft inside to prevent turning on the shaft - then coated it with thinned resin twice before painting - so it would be a pain to remake now especially as it is held in place by another brass pin soldered in at the bottom.

    Hi Fred,
Yes i see what you are saying.
You would end up with a lip under the hull where the 'O' ring seal is.

    Hi Martin

Thank you for your tip, I do have a block of wood shaped to the hull for the post to sit in, its just that I do not like the fact that the black rudder post has to be so far out of the hull to get it to sit right due to the shape of the hull, if I use some brass tube in its place it will look like it is part of the rudder, hope that came out how I have it in my mind?

When I have done the new post I will post some photos of both post.

    Hi Fred,
Have you thought about gluing a piece of thick wood say about 10mm thick were the rudder is.
Shape the underside of the wood to the shape of the inner hull then make sure the top edge is nice a level.
That will help the rudder stay at the correct angle.

Thank you, I would say it took about two hours in total, I took most of it off with a jewellery saw then finished off with files.

    Hi One and All
Well I have been looking at the rudder on the Guardsman.

Taking into account all of your comments, I have been thinking (not a good idea) I will make a bespoke rudder but unlike the one on the plans, I hope that the new one will be fitted into the shape of the hull and not look like a barn door.

I will post updates as I go alone.

Having read about Martin and Bill being removed as Mod's I now feel that I will just be come a spectator from now on.

I will be moving this build to another forum, as said in Hitchhiker's Guide " So long and thanks for all the fish".

    Hi Martin

Thank you for your comments, I just do not like to see any of my friends treated in a bad way.

I know that we have not had any form of post from Fireboat to say why he removed you and Bill from your posts, so to me that is a case of throwing his toy's out of his pram.

Keep safe the both of you

It has been two years since I last posted anything on this build, in that time I had fitted the deck and found that when I fitted the deck housing it made her look as if she had broken her back, so I removed the deck and at this point I just put her onto the shelf, for two years she has been giving me the evil eye, so that in the end I took her down from the shelf and started working on her again.

Despite the cold I have been working on the rope locker and trying to plank the deck, this how she now looks.

With the deck replaced she now looks right not broken back.

Well done with the planking. Applying deck planking with individual planks, especially then with separate infill strips to replicate caulking is something I always admire. I have seen a number of failures, but most of us seem to have quite high standards and will re-make work that is not up to scratch. I certainly find that, and in cases have re-made work three times in order to get it right.πŸ˜‰
