    Hi BW3,
    A photo of a diagram of what you want to do would be handy, motors, esc, rudders, and a pic of the boat.

    Basically I don't think switching Brushless is a good idea as the as 3 wires involved and you need t reverse two of them, the Brushless ESC will likely get upset if you don't come to a stop before going into reverse. this is because the ESC and brushless motor work together timing wise if you suddenly disconnect/ reverse you will have problems.

    Brushed motors will be more likely to be successful, but with your electronics knowledge, you will be aware of motor back EMF's and sudden reverses with motor at full speed in one direction could lead to problems also.
