Building a boat which is actually a 10 rater but I'm not planning to race it. Most sails these days are mylar and not what I want as I'm looking for a more 'Classic' look and even plan to build a cabin top. I've seen some using 'ripstop' nylon but these tend to have a square pattern woven into them which is probably the element preventing rips. Can anyone suggest anything? Off white would be good or perhaps dark red or brown.
Depending on size, but I find fine cotton cloth available from most haberdashers, I use my local Dunhelm. For vintage sailing boats I have used old curtain liner which is very easy to sew (my wife does mine). Then you can either stain or dye to suit your needs. Hope that helps. Cheers Colin.
As you say Colin, size is the issue. The main will be near 6 feet high with a 21" foot so I doubt cotton type materials will work also bearing in mind that despite having a 'Classic' look it will probably perform like a racer. So I need the near impossible...a modern material that looks classic.
White silk springs to mind, or a fine weave terylene. Luckily the sails I have to replace are rarely put to use other than for display at vintage shows. Only occasionally going on the water. Cheers Colin.
I build both scale rc racing yachts and some scale gaff rigged cutters...all actually sail RC. I use several different materials, for the cutters, I have found the light spinnaker material from sail shops works great, much lighter than you would expect.
I live on the US west coast near many sailing harbors, the sails shops just give me some of their scraps, free!
Light weight reinforce, checked pattern, from the local fabrics stores work also. Like a very light windbreaker material.
