Whilst on weekend leave, I have given due thought to our patrols looking for the Somerset Scrumpy Smugglers. No doubt they are well aware of our current, predictable, modus operandi, therefore, as from today, our patrols will be more erratic and take place at any time day or night. In this way, hope to catch them red handed. Nerys SubLt.

Thanks Doug. That is very useful information on the charging of LiPo`s. I usually restrict to 2A. I will reduce in future.πŸ‘ I recently bought a plane to try again. I fly well with flight sim X but as soon as I get behind an RC, I panic and CRUNCH. I am trying to find a really cheap plane to fly that will bounce so that I can man up and stop the immediate panic on take off.😁

    Upgrade to 2.4
If you know what spot frequency you are on it will help you to avoid interference - you should not try to sail with anyone on the same frequency, and you should display the right colour flag to warn other people. Is there a marker anywhere on your boat or instructions that has a number something like '27.nnn'? For instance, 27.045 would be Red....

    RC it ??
One of the guys in our group has successfully made an old pond boat into rc by putting a small cabin on deck housing a receiver and battery with a rudder servo. Sails are still manual but with a mid setting she sails well in most conditions. Cloth sails can be improved without changing them by putting on a clear proofing. I use thompsons water seal which is totally clear and blocks the holes in the cloth so wind can't go through. Tent waterproofer has the same effect and you can get a spray can of it from most tent outlets. This gives a much improved catchment to the sail area.

    What have I got?
Lighter DXF file now on the web page. Note: 1 - I run vintage everything here. Consequently the DXF file was generated by software from the 1980s, and may have compatibility issues with modern code. If you have problems, tell me, and I'll find a way to update it... http://eezebilt.tk/lightplan.html 2 - The plan was designed for 16"-20" barges to go with the EeZeBilt Beaver. If you go much bigger you will need thicker material or some extra support in the centre to stop a long run of thin material bending. But I guess that you know that anyway... 3 - Modern lighters - as the Spittalfields reference on the web site illustrates - typically carry freight (usually garbage) in boxes like shipping containers. Perhaps I should make up a plan for those too - but they are a fairly simple shape anyway...

I believe that some large model aircraft with multiple engines have a 'Flight Engineer' who is entirely responsible for engine management, with his own separate radio system. But that's rather a special case...

    Wiring help needed.
Hi Cash. I am trying to setup a set of test servos with the rx and an esc and motor before I try fitting it to the boat. To prove my wiring is correct first. I will post the results at the end of the week. Cheers Colin.

Doug, talking of Locking, there were a couple of great characters from Locking sailing at the Weston Bay Yacht Club in the late forties. Both had open boats rigged with sprit mainsails, a la Thames Barge, plus various other bits of canvas. I remember sailing in my dinghy in company with them one summer morning morning bound for Barry. Dead flat calm clear of the bay. One of the RAF Locking lads, produces a set of bagpipes, stands in his boat playing them as his way of whistling for the wind. It sounded great and I've always thought it was a wonderful setting for the skirl of the pipes. And it worked! Nerys

Hi Pete, Yes I've noticed some peculiar anomalies with the vids, photos, and Blogs as well I thinkπŸ€” The so called Avatar is the pic / photo you added to your Profile, instead of the grey ghost! Can be one of your boats, or your boating lake (as in your case) instead of an ugly phizog like mine😁 Cheers, Doug 😎

    first builds
Andrew are you building on a board with the frames fastened to it or gripping by the keel?. You need to hold the frames firmly and find a nice narrowish piece of flexible plastic/wood whatever and bend around the frames lengthwise. That should give you some idea of how much out they are. Trouble with old plans is they are very rarely accurate and sometimes frames are shown with planking sometimes not . if you pm me I can help - we are at least in the same country.

    looking for plans
If you could get hold of a book called 'Ronde en Platbodem jachten' by Mr.Dr.T.Huitema, published in 1977, that has a wealth of plans and construction details of many different types of Dutch barge from the well known Boiers, Botters and Hoogars to many of the less known regional boats. The text is in Dutch of course, but it's the pictures that we are looking at. Nerys

    Cheap (steampunk?) homemade ESC
This contraption is a speed controller I made from a Dick Smith voltage regulator kit (almost before you could buy any modern ESCs). Servo turns the pot and micro switch turns power off in neutral (stopped) Reverse was a toggle switch operated by a servo (as described previously in the 'cheap reversing switch' post. The other pic is of ready made version I just bought (Ali Express) which is more powerful, and can also be used as a speed controller/voltage reg for anything. Could be operated by a servo on its side with a flexible coupling. $3.55 NZD cheap as! JB
