There I was walking along in the boot sale when I spied two boxes beneath a desperately unstable table. Dived in and found about 120 copies of The Model Engineer from the 30s 40s 50s and 60s. £7 later I struggle back to my car and am now consumed by them. Believe me it's much better than watching politicians posing on tele. Anyway, thought you might like to see the report of the 1951 Speed Competition.

Fascinating insight into model boats in the year of my birth! 👍
No mention of control systems !? Interesting! Cheers Doug 😎

1950 for me Doug. The 50s still fascinate me. Found an article on 'The Mechanics of Radio Control' by Raymond F Stock, dealing with electromagnets and the wire gauge and number of turns therein, but, generally, the fifties must have seen RC in it's formative years.

Aaah! The halcyon days of grid bias batteries and 4.5V flat cycle lamp batteries. My H class destroyer used one of those on it's maiden voyage ca 1963 😎

Absolutely Mark. you're right but they made some big, beautiful models in those days. I will post some photos of them, from the Model Engineer, over the next few weeks.
