Here on the west central coast of Florida, this has been a crazy winter. Much cooler than an average winter, about two weeks ago we had a break with a few days setting record highs (into the low 80's F). Back to the cool, damp, and occasionally breezy weather.
The tourists and recent transplants don't seem to mind. I moved here 60 years ago and my blood has "thinned out". Those tourists walk around in shorts, tee shirts, and flip-flops while we are bundled up. Today, another "front" moved through bringing a lot of rain, cancelling the meet as Kevin mentioned. Prior to this we had several days of good weather for model boating. Why is it the weather seems to be at its worst on Sundays?. Lew Florida ⚡, USA ▲

Funny you should ask.
The weather where I live has been quite abnormally temperate this winter. In spite of that, my wife and I decided to take a winter road-trip south. We left the tundra in Minnesota on 1/31. We headed south for some winter warmth. Yesterday we were traveling west on I-40 in northern New Mexico with 38 to 50 mile an hour crosswinds. We looked at the weather forecast for our destination, and discovered that we would need to “re-winterize” our motor home if we stayed the course … as the overnight low was going to be 20F. We altered our course and are now only 20 miles north of Mexico, where the overnight low was a balmy 35F. The scenery is beautiful, but the weather is NOT what we expected. ▲

The other thing to bear in mind, is not just the number of members on the site, but also system storage. Just storing a new members details, even if they never use the site is a miniscule amount of storage, and hence costs. So the time taken for Stephen to clear unused accounts is probably far from cost effective.

Hi Mike, very fair observation.
It's not just a problem of this forum, many register just for a question or not even that. I might think that the administrator (in an intelligent and far-sighted way) prefers to have many members even if not very participatory and to encourage the spread of naval modelling. Maybe they don't create a big IT inconvenience, but only our administrator can answer this. I wouldn't cancel anyone. ▲

I quite agree Michel👍
I too have noticed that. Particularly in such as the 'Birthday This Week' Notifications. Names crop up that I've never heard of. When I check them out I usually find that they signed on several years ago and then went AWOL after a few months, without ever posting anything. In some unfortunate cases Birthday This Week is announced for much respected members who have left us, departing to the Great Model Shipyard in the heavens, and are sorely missed. Latest example being our dear Fleet Admiral Nerys, who would have been 91 last January 28th had she not sadly died last March after a long and courageous fight against illness. A lovely lady with a consummate knowledge of sailing barges, especially Thames barges which she captained during her long maritime career. Pic shows her Avatar, a Thames Sailing Barge of course. Gone but not forgotten. Doug. ▲

Hi all further to my comment 6 months ago. My friend Guy never made his 104th. birthday, He died just a few weeks short of 19th. June. Not sad at all, as he had enjoyed a good life and he told me he was ready to go anyway.
We had a planned party for him at the Model engineering society, but we decided to carry on with the day and remember Guy. Some of his ashes were sprinkled over the outside Gauge 1 track he had contributed to. Nice idea and I shall pass by him every time I visit. (He did build a couple of boats as well)! Like many of us, not in anyway famous just one of those that keeps the world ticking over and working. This is the bit the vociferous amongst the population forget, but someone has to keep the lights on. Regards Roy ▲

Roy, et al.,
I don't know much about the model railroad sales here in the US. Here in Florida most homes do not have basements. Also with mild winters (tee short and shorts today) there's no need to go into hibernation and work on a hobby in a warm area of one's home. Last year another hobby shop locally bit the dust. We now have two hobby shops serving about one million people in Pinellas County. Lew ▲

Hi, yes it is a thinking hobby, solving problems and assembling the drive train has many options and I include sails here as well and then deciding what is a reasonable spend and also to utilise what you have to hand.
Much of the thinking that goes into models is unnoticed by others but is the main reason for the building. When I start a new model I start with a new page in my 'Notes on Boats' diary. Dates are important as well. I do a fanciful list of what I would like to have in the model, some things look impossible but then a few weeks later a possible solution pops into your head. Everything gets listed including the build order and ticked off or crossed out as it all progresses. Over the Covid period I often wonder if the now woke term BC could now be repurposed as Before Covid and 'the now' can be PC as in Post Covid. Sorry side tracked. I believe sales of kits increased during lockdown but from here it is difficult to detect many new members coming into our area of interest. Model railway sales increased by 20% in UK did the same happen in USA? Anyway age was mentioned. On Friday afternoons I go over to see a long term friend he is mostly blind but otherwise active looking after himself with a little help. He is working on a Gauge 1 simple electric loco using his engineering workshop. He should make his next birthday in June 2023 when he will be 104 years old. At my age of 84 going on 85 I feel a mere stripling! regards Roy ▲

Well said John, ownership of ready to sail models is never the same as ownership of something you have made yourself, whether that be scratch built from plans, put together from your own design, or built from kits. And if you are a scratch builder, like myself, it's a much cheaper hobby!
For Christmas (and birthday) my sons and daughter gave me some plastic display boats to make. Some are so small I have to use a lighted magnifying glass to see and fit some parts! Apart from the continual pleasure of seeing them, the building of them not only informs of their construction, it develops the power of patience and keeps you away from brain stultifying TV! Hi Greg,
Welcome indeed to this wonderful site. I am sure you will find the Diva mode a great challenge to build and very satisfying to sail. I note that you are based around Exeter, so please try to find Model Boat Club not too far away. As well as this site you may like to check the forums on modelboamayhem and Model boats (linked with Model Boats Magazine) which could lead you to local club s as well as host of useful info. With very best wishes and please ask if you get stuck - we all love our hobby and will do all we can to help. John F Leeds &Bradford MBC😁😁🤗 ▲

Hi Ron,
I live in Cumbria, in a area of sparse population. I belong to Darlington model boat club, but it is a 90 mile roundtrip away. Carlisle model boat club is about 100mile round trip. Lakes of the Lake District National Park are unsuitable for model boats. There are no model shops selling boats /fittings etc in Cumbria, buy most stuff online. Regards Roy ▲

A good afternoon modelboat builders, modelboat yacht men and model yacht skippers
Indeed is this à fantastic site for ant one who wants à solution or a question answered regarding building. Personnaly i joined thé royal model yacht club when i was 16 years old. We do have à fantastic maken espacially build for us. Thé complet pond is vuiltje in concrete and had à depth of one meter on top of that thé pond is about 2 meters deep with thé actual ground level si even when it is windy it doesn’t affect out sailing. Having Saïd this we struggle as Many hobby clubs with finding or welcoming new and preferably young members. We know that we are not thé only club with this problem. Si if any one of you got Some good ideas they are more than welcome. Looking forward to the suggestions Regards Herman Lifeboat lover ▲
