This looks great. Im just about to set off on the adventure of building a Range Safety Launch from scratch using a Vic Smeed plan set I have managed to obtain. The plans are 1/12th but I'm scaling down to 1/16th for practical reasons. Let me know how you get on or If you need copies of plans etc. Well done !

aerokits sea rover / modified fpl - Posted: 7 years ago by triumphjon
the sea rover was bought locally as a wreck with much of the forward section of the cabin missing , however It has been rebuilt In a matter of weeks to sailing condition , Its now running a single vision 600 motor on 7.2 volts , & has a reasonable turn of speed and very good rudder response ! the fpl was a double purchase as I bought a pair of hulls , one had a better finish than Its sister although this didnt matter as they were both stripped back to bare timber and resprayed with wilkinsons enamel spray . as the cabins were not remaining Ive made both boats Into vospers mk2 range safety launches , neither models are fully finished but Ive started to use 1640 , I know 1646 wasnt a number Issued by the raf , but as the model Is to be operated by my neice It was the number she has chosen !

Just got my Sea Rover today as well as an Aerokits MTB with a lovely Taycol Double Special In It. I'd forgotten how twisted the Sea Rover Is!!
It'll need some serious cutting and regluing aft. I need to remake the screen area and canopy. It has an original MFA Humming Bird 15 motor complete with the label.

That reminds me, has anyone got any plans or details to finish the MTB? It has only a basic few bits of superstructure.
Cheers,
Westquay

well , Ive taken the plunge and purchased a second sea rover from mmy local shop , my first one has been transformed Into a huntsman 28 with twin 400 motors , however this "new boat " Is being restored to near original condition , Ive altered the cockpit window area & have opted for a wrap around screen , Im also opening up the rear cockpit , fitting most of the radio & drive battery beneath the new false floor , power for this project Is the 750 with a 7.2 volt battery pack ! will post pics soon ! Ive also just bought a pair of aerokits fpl s for restoration , these are being built up Into 1/24th scale (43ft) thorneycroft range safety launches , they will however retain a single propshaft & rudder , be powered by a 380 motor % either 7.2 or 9.6 volt battery , the Intention Is that although Ive cut the replacement superstructure parts for both boats , a freinds 13 year old daughter Is giong to build the second boat up ( as a first working model !) It will be sailed alongside her dads 1/24th scale vosper 103ft patrol boat , either around woking or here In portsmouth !
Response by triumphjon on the 24th Dec 2010
following a couple new modifications my sea rover has been re motored with a vision 600 without the two torque rings , now running a 7.2 or 9.6 battery pack fitted under the rear floor , Ive also reinstated the box at the stern which has my steering servo mounted underneath It , the "box Is to full deck height with a removable top for servo acsess , Ive Included a helm position c/w a period helmsman ( hes still got his teddy boy quiff ! ) although Ive not fitted the roof over the cockpit , Ive also cut a door Into the front cabin , which will In time have a pair of opening barn doors & a small hinged top hatch over them . working 3mm led navigation and cabin lamps have also been fitted although Ive used a more modern cover for them , After looking through one of my magazines the sea rover bears a very close resembelance to a moody 27 gentlemans sports boat of the mid sixties !
Response by BigChris on the 26th May 2013
I have two sea rovers - both bought off e-bay. The first Is In virtually original condition down to the original motor and speed controller although the speed controller now seems to have given up the ghost so will be replaced with a viper plug and play. I have added a small mast and wired In nav and masthead lights. It sails beautifully and creates a load of Interest at the pond side
The second more recent acquisition Is an abandoned project, but with most of the construction work done. I have had to rebuild the windscreen frame and I have done this by laminating plasticard. I have to say the finished affect Is pretty good although purists are probably tearing their hair out at the very thought of using plasticard! Ah well everyone Is entitled to their opinion.

Many thanks Jon

Hi Jon It might be worth phoning the Vintage Model Boat Company as they may have knowledge of the exact items for your requirements not shown on their website.

Also Scale Hobbies in Skelmersdale may be helpful too.

Regards Boaty
Response by jonbliss152 on the 7th Oct 2016
Thanks again for the info Boaty, I've decided to fit a Brushless 28/38mm 3500KV motor with a 35Amp ESC. The motor seems to have quite a bit of torque and runs at a high top speed, though its first sea trial will tell all. When I get it fully assembled I'll post a few images on the webpage.

Thanks again for the help 😀

Regards Jon
