Hi Dave the new project I found out is not a wyeforce its a little longer and the cowling curves in more so I think ill call it wyeforce 2.

yes Dave i raised the deck you were right about the water getting in. New project is the last Wye Forces Hull from slipway as the mold has been broken up. Should be fun.

Really well built model of the Slipway kit. The detail is really good and some excellent pics. I see you put a raised coaming round the rear deck opening, should keep the water out. Congratulations on finishing.
Have you another project in mind?

TRENT LIFE BOAT
Been on hold for awhile while working on
al khubar
.
Time to finish it you may have seen it at Haydock (OWLS).
Running gear and electrics all working and has been sailed no leaks, Deck railings and all the white metal bits need doing along with a coat of paint to the deck.
Superstructure and Fly Bridge need fittings and painting.
Lots to keep me going for a while. More to come as I progress.

Yes but the centre part of back deck on the
al khubar
is removable so you can get to the rudders and motor couplings.
The instructions suggest a close fitting sheet of plasticard will suffice. Didn't for me as the deck get very wet even in calm waters.
Hope you have better luck than me.

Thanks Dave ill take on board your comments but I always double seal my decks pouring in fastglas resin moving the hull around while it hardens a bit. try it if you haven't already it works.

Built one of these a few years ago. Great for tug towing and rescue work. Had an Action mixer at one time and with two separate 6v batteries worked great. I could literally spin in the spot. Moved to twin motor control as I used to fly model planes and was used to using all four stick axis. Not sure a bow thruster will work well on this model as it is so manouverable.
Makes into a nice realistic model and I wish I had kept mine.
If I were to make another I would make a better seal of the rear deck, it leaks like mad in it's designed fit. I eventually made a raised coaming round the opening.
Coming along nicely.

Propulsion Hegi Revell Fairplay V tug model
Hi Radiosailor
I was not familiar with the model so have just searched.
The Tug forum http://modeltugforum.com/
has an article by a member who did some mods. if you register you can see the pics and ask for advice.
Regarding fixed or steerable nozzles they both work better than a standard prop. For maximum effect the steerable works best and this will certainly be the case with a single prop. I have had both types on tugs but mine were twin screw and I could turn both on the spot with independent motor control.
From the motors you have I suspect the Xdrive 555 may have the best torque which as Doug said is best for Tugs.
There are several suppliers but without knowing any measurements it's difficult to point you to a specific site.
It should make into a nice model and will certainly look the part on the water.
If you look on Model Slipiway's web site http://www.modelslipway.com/ they have a kit
al khubar
and AZIZ which are twin Kort. There are links to build blogs for the AZIZ which may be useful. Model Boats and MMI also had featured articles on builds for
al khubar

HI Barry & Mark
Yes lack of knowledge of a particular model can make advice difficult.
I have fitted kort nozzels to a couple of my tugs and I would advise using a template to ensure you get the nozzles absolutely central with the prop shaft. The instructions with my
al khubar
suggested using a plasticard disk cut to the inner diameter of the nozzle with a hole drilled in the centre to take the prop shaft (both need to be a tight fit). You can then attach the disc to the prop shaft and fix with nuts either side of the disc and align the propshaft to the nozzle. Try and make sure you get everything nice and square as the props should be a close fit, mine had a 1-2mm clearance all round. You may find that the hole in the hull needs to be widened to get the required result, mine certainly did, but you can use plastic padding to make good once finished. if I was doing another I think I would also test fit the motor to make sure of a nice straight drive chain.
My Eldergarth had steerable nozzles so alignment is more critical than for a fixed nozzle with rudder. Hopefully your plan shows the position of the prop relative to the rear of the nozzle as some props have an extension on the boss that might foul the rudder, I know from experience with my
al khubar
so I suggest you try your prop in position before you finally fix.
Hope this will help Barry fit the Korts succesfully.

Good to see a model of a UK tug which saw service abroad. I suspect with all that power on board you could tow some quite large and heavy loads. Will you be building one of the Union Castle ships to complement your tug? ๐
Be good to see some video of her sailing. My
al khubar
used to use software to link the twin screws to the rudders and exhibited all the sailing features you describe.
As you have added lots of electrical detail it would be good if you could share what and how you did as many members seek to achieve similar results but lack sufficient knowledge.
Thanks for sharing and hoping you consider shareing your next build. ๐

Hull Materials
Interesting conversion of the wave height - in my experience water can not be scaled!
I see the word slalom is used - does this equate to some form of race? Ie will you be competing with others on a timed basis? Manouverability and speed are not really that compatible so you catamaran would be ideal for speed but not so good at turns,
If you are allowed to use a kortz nozzle this would give good control. Even better if you were allowed to move the nozzle round the prop in a vertical axis giving very powerful direction control.
I had a Model Slipway
al khubar
tug that used two nozzles, those were fixed and used rudders as per full size. However steering was best done by controlling the motor speeds and direction. One forward and one reverse resulted in a spin on the spot. I used the same in another Tug Eldergarth 48" 1:32 scale (Mobile Marine) and this uses moveable nozzles (no actual rudder) and this also turns on the spot.
Attaching a couple of pics of the Eldergarth togive you the idea. The real boat worked the Mersey estuary for many years so would withstand the Sea State stated.
I use a couple of Smiths Fan heater motors with a large 12v SLA, twin Electronize ESC's (15amp). Mtronik do similar which may more suit your budget.
Hope this helps. Post details of your plans so others can join in the discussion. ๐

Always liked this model ever since I saw it at E Port some years ago. ๐ I built an

and always regretted selling her. Like you I raised the rear deck to keep the water out. I also have a shed load of boats and many awaiting construction. Maybe someday I will build one. The wheelhouse looks very detailed your efforts have clearly Improved on the original high standard. ๐

Model as bought and tested
Swapped this 1:12 (1"=1') scale model for my ageing
al khubar
tug. This is a good size 52" x 17".
As received there were two Bhuler motors and two 30amp ESC's, plus two servos - one for each rudder. initial sea trials at the club lake(www.creweanddistrictmodelboatclub.org.uk) using a 12v7Ah SLA prooved that the boat was seaworthy and controllable.
All the fittings appear to be for a smaller scale, possibly 1:16 and will be removed. The hull and supestructure castings are by David Metcalfe and I was fortunate to meet and talk with David at the Blackpool show to confirm this. Also in attendance were members from the Lifeboat Enthusiasts' Society (LES). I now know that my model is of a 52' Arun. I have obtained a copy of RNLI Motor Lifeboats (ISBN 1-84306-341-7) by Nicholas Leach together with some colour photos from LES. The Yarmouth lifeboat 52-08 Joy & John Wade has a similar cabin to my model and I am considering this as an option. I will start by removing and replacing the running gear and rudders as I am not sure they are in the correct position and I always like to start at the keel of any vessel as problems here are difficult to fix later. Photos show interior looking aft, props and running gear, overall view and flying bridge. This should be cut out to the cabin top with the cox standing behind a screen. Lots to do. Any suggestions for motors, ESC's, batteries?

Arun Class Lifeboat
I have just acquired this model via a swap for my
al khubar
Tug. I am in the process of deciding which actual lifeboat to model. This is based on the Metcalfe Moulding and is 1/12 scale at 52". in its present condition it has two Buhler motors and some early ESC's. Power is from a 12v 7Ahr dry cell. it looks great on the water but duration is not that great. I am preparing for a complete rebuild including re-prop shafting and different motors. I may rebuild the cabin as the moulding I have was only used on 5 Arun's and I may not be able to get enough details. I have sourced a plan and have detail pictures for City of Glasgow 111 (needs new cabin). Awaiting a book "RNLI Motor Lifeboats" from Amazon to help me progress. The present crew will have to be relocated to a 16th scale model! if I remember to take photos I will post a build blog.
