We formed in about 1989 as "The Boat Club" based at the Ellesmere Port
    boat museum
. In the nineties we changed the name to the Ellesmere Port Model Boat Club. We meet and sail at the Museum but now have a pool at The Hooton Park Trust site. We are currently 30 members strong and have models of every type.

Hi Norm, I think you are wrong!๐Ÿ˜ฒ Found this in a museum article - "Whalers were made in two sizes, 27 foot and 25 foot and were able to be both pulled and sailed. When being pulled they were single banked, that is a single oar was used from each thwart, three on one side and two on the other. The oars had a central shaft of Oregon pine, with laminated blades, four of them being 17 feet long and the bowmanโ€™s 16 feet in length.[4] When under sail the boat has two masts and carries a โ€˜Montagu Rig Kโ€™." http://navymuseum.co.nz/naval-whalers/ The entry also gives an insight into construction techniques and materials used ๐Ÿ˜‰ Best wishes for the coming 'Boat Year', Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Looks like it might have been part of one of their Flying Boats! Lots of their old goodies to see in the Bing Museum. https://www.wikiwand.com/de/Historisches_Spielzeugmuseum_Freinsheim http://www.spielzeugmuseum-freinsheim.de/english/index.html Sadly Bing was a victim of the 30s crash and the company was broken up. BTW: they used to do a lot of contract model railway work for Bassett-Lowe! 16mm track gauge, which became the HO/OO standard. The loco in the pic is a 'Real Steamer' ๐Ÿ˜‰ Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    Darby One Design hydro...
Dave , I made it. I found plans in a 1954 copy of the Motor Boat Annual I borrowed from the National Power
    boat museum
at Pitsea, before the stupid bastards on the council threw it away in preference for mud huts for snotty nosed brats to go mad in. Only today I finally got some pictures from the Oulton Broad club with pics of the Darby boasts I hadn't seen, which show that the top cowling was always built a little higher than the plans show, so I shall be making some slight changes to the fixed portions. The photos show the fixed sections to be done with stringers and fabric, a la aeroplane fuselage. You can't buy decent older powerboats as kits or ready mades. Nobody gives a toss about speedboat models in this country, alas. Even though we had a very busy world of inboard race boats at one time. Now, all is boring outboards. The 1500 cc inboard classes gave us a lot of great racing just pre and post-War. Here are three in one race. "WHO'S DARBY?", Dawn, a Whippet class and Miss Windermere, another One design, like the Oulton Broad One design, all three are 1500 cc class boats. There wqere also boats of under 950cc and even a Singer Cadet class with a Singer Le Mans 1100 cc engine. The Singer Commodore had a 6 cylinder 1500, a gorgeous engine. Both Singers were designed by Percy See at Shoreham and had diagonal reverse clinker construction. I have plans if anyone is interested. Cheers, Martin

    Mahogany in Scale
Last I saw t, he showed it working. Alas he has been stricken with Alzheimers in the last few months. I was asked not to go round as his wife had had a fall and it was all rather awkward round there. So suddenly a good old friend (he's 84) has been taken from me. What will happen to all his stuff, I dread to think. There are over 50 flyable aircraft in sheds, caravans and his large loft, even some boats. He gave me a GRP hull of the Bloodhound and a freelance, very early GRP cruiser hull. I shall attempt to finish them in his memory, because it's like he's died. That E.D. RC set should be in a museum, but there ain't no model museums. Martin

    Crash Tender davit info...
Martin. The textured spray I used came from Halfords and was applied in very thin layers to build up the required texture, bear in mind that the finishing colour will 'fill' the texture to some degree. I also applied a satin lacquer to seal the final surface. Sprinkling pixie dust (or crushed chinchillas ๐Ÿ˜ฑ) onto wet paint sounds a bit hit & miss to me ๐Ÿ˜. Whatever you do is acceptable as 'modellers license', and why not be individual with a two-tone grey scheme๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘. Doug. I think I saw these books and others on Amazon UK when I doing my initial research but concluded that they probably wouldn't have any specific info or 'photos on the flying boat crash rescue tenders which are the subject of the discussion here and I didn't want to shell out on the off-chance that they would, but certainly very useful for the other RAF boats. RAF Hendon museum is very close to me, I could walk there in 20 minutes if I was feeling energetic, and it could be worth asking to see what 'photos and documents they have there. Robbob.

    what have I got?
Bryan, that appears to be a Fast Patrol Boat. I don't know that it was a kit one, although Aerokits did one, but it looks to be a very nicely done model. You certainly can't get those batteries any more, Ever ready being long dead as a company, but please keep them. They are more museum pieces than the boat! And that motor is something interesting. if you want to replace it with some modern rubbish, I'd be interested in buying it from you for my "Maverick's collection of Unfeasable Motors". I would be tempted to leave the finish as it is as that is so typical of the period (late 50s), but rarely seen any more. it's a very nice boat and deserves to be kept in period. These boats for real, were not that fast, despite being called High Speed Launches, so you don't need some screaming brushless in it. A 400 brushed would be sufficient. Some suitable decals on the hull sides would finish it off nicely. You could paint those side windows dark gloss grey to represent glass from a distance. Cheers, Martin

I have sourced a set of plans for the Vintage Veron Vosper RTTL 28" from ebay. I shall bring this up to date with modern electrics and will be using the same electric brushless set up as per the Fairy Huntress featured in the latest issue of "Model Boats" I have sourced the motor, ESC, LIPO and other standard electrical bits from Hobbyking and have ordered the required wood from SLEC. I shall loosly base the model on the example that can be seen at the RAF Museum Hendon. Watch this space once building comences in the next 2-3 weeks!

    Chesapeak Bay Maritime Museum
This is way more than just a maritime museum. The location in the heart the Chesapeak Bay Area, the home of the only sail โ€ fishing fleet in the U.S.A. No power drives at all with the exception of small โ€pusherโ€ units, kind of tiny, with room for a motor only! These are used to aid in getting to the fishery. The traditional boat is a Skipjack and the museum is a living boat yard. So even when there is no events there is always something to see. Model boat days are held around a large square tempary pool. One day is for scale and live steam, and another is free sail and model skipjack racing. We do not have control of the weather but I can not remember anything but sun on the days I have been there๐Ÿ‘. The team at the museum are a great group of ladies and gentlemen who are passionate in their love of the sea and on model days you will find loads of helpful tips etc from all the โ€œcaptainsโ€. if you are visitors on holiday, Anapolis is no more than three quarters of an hour away, this is the home of the Rodgers collection of dockyard models and the worlds largest collection of French prisoner of war bone models (napolionic) in the world, it is a super nautical town! the Chesapeake museum is in St.Michaels, with lots of super shopping for the non model boating spouses. Further up the road on Tilghman island is a fantastic nautical book store who specializes in model ships and boats. However you need to visit the book store a day before the show day as everyone will be looking for that rare and special book!!!!! Hope this is a help.

    RAF rttl D2763
A brief history After the second world war and as part of the occupational forces the Second tactical air force the RAF took over Sylt airport in 1945 and later in 1946 the RAF decided to use the airport and the airspace west of Sylt and Amrum as a firing range, and was known as RAF Sylt Armament Practice Station. From February 1948 to February 1949 the airfield was closed and prepared for the operation of jet aircraft. For target practice a target towing Squadron was stationed continuously on the station. The aircraft used were Miles M. 25 Martinet, hawker Tempest TT, DE Havilland mosquito TT. 35, Gloster Meteor F. 8, Meteor T 7. For instruction and training flights the flight also had some DE Havilland vampire T. 9s, hawker Hunter F. 4s, Hunter T. 7s. The aircraft of the target towing squadron were housed in the hangar of 402 near the South West of the Station. Therefore, the unofficial designation of weapon training squadron 402 was used at the time. For patrolling and securing the range area, as well as for rescue and training operations Marine Craft Section boats were stationed at List and Hรถrnum, Bristol Sycamore HR 14 rescue helicopters were Also station at RAF Sylt. Air traffic control boats and HSLs were stationed in the port of List at the beginning of the fifties (see pictures) D Boats In 1954, the decision was taken to replace the air traffic control boats and the HSLs with RttLs mk2s Rescue Target Towing Launch. As part of the rebuilding program to help the German economy the boats were designed and built by Krogerwerft Yard at Rendsburg. (Later taken over by Lursson ship builders) and were numbered D2762- D2766 these boats came in service mid 1955 which explains why my Father severed on both HSL and D-boats (preferring the D-boat) D2762 and D2765 Based Hรถrnum, D2763 and D2764 from List, with D2766 as a reserve boat in the event of maintenance or breakdown, Their design was very different to any other boats in the Marine Craft Section/unit more like the German Schenllboot or S Boot (allied code name 'E' Boat which my father always used), with flared bows and rounded bilges and powered by high speed diesels. The D boats were fitted with winches for Target Towing, these were removed as the boats duties were change to Range Safety and ASR These boats only served with the RAF, until 1961. Two were sold to the south African Air force D2762 and D2764 in1961, and the other three handed over to the Federal German Navy in 1961. All were subsequently used as ASR craft. D- Boats in German service The German Navy, the โ€œBundesmarine commissioned them on 1.9.1961 as FL 9 to FL11 and were used by Marinefliegergeschwader 5"naval aviation Squadron 5โ€ Until end of September 1975. the three were termed as air traffic control The fate of these three boats is a bit uncertain, one of these boats was in the process of being sold as NVG S1 as a North Sea supply boat, this deal fell through and the boat was sold to private owner in italy (no further record for this boat found) the other two boats are said to been scraped or de-commissioned , however these boats are quit properly the two that ended up in the service of the Spanish customs service as cutters, after they were confiscated when smuggling, I have tried to contact the Spanish about these boats but have not heard from them and presume they were scraped or sold in to private hands ( there is the suggestion that they were driven on rocks and sunk, no evidence found) D-boats of the South African air force/navy The two boats that were obtained by the south African air force in 1961 were originally known as R30 and R31 and they served under SAAF until 1969 when the unit was taken over by the south African navy and R30 became P1552 and R31 became P1551 these were changed again when holiday makers referred to the boats as PISS1 and PISS1 too R30 to P30 and R31 to P31. Both these boats were diffidently sunk R30 Lost off Saldanah Bay on 7 October 1988 after striking a reef off Danger Point. R31, near Cape Point, after she grounded through contaminated fuel issues There are somethings about these boats that strike me as odd, The originations that took over these boats, they donโ€™t like to mention the fact that these were ex-RAF or British boats, There is no record of the Spanish boats, it is said that they were sunk but no details are available except what is said on one form. I think I have done as much looking for information as I can, most of the bare facts are stated so thanks to all those web sites and forms that I have used and the pictures I have used I would like to thank to Dave M for the drawing And thanks to the marine craft branch museum for their help and for putting me in touch with Mr Rick Mortby who built the museums model of the D boat And a big thank you to Rick Mortby for the scale drawing and for his trust. And to Dr Christian Ostersehlte historian for Lurssen shipbuilders for the pictures of my Fathers boat D2763 and now I can start the building of the model D boat

    R.N.L.B. Lady MacRobert (Montrose Lifeboat)
Not done a 'blog' But my Solent also started off as an 'Aerokits' kit back in '79 or 80'. it was always an ever changing model and has ended up as true scale as I can get it using the drawings I bought from RNLI drawing office in Poole a few years ago. I gave it a fake number 48-021 to cover any mistakes if compared to a real life boat. I've sailed it across the Blackwater estuary in Essex from Bradwell and I can honestly say it was the first craft in Burnham-on-Crouch Marina when they let the water through in (about) '88 or '89. After donating my old home made RCME 27meg system to the Mid Thames Boat Club museum at Beale park in 2000 I sailed it at Beale park quite a lot with my new 'Fleet'gear- trouble was MTBC always had their 'lifeboat days' when we were on holiday and the lifeboat days fizzled out. So now it languishes in the garage.. Did meet some nice people from Watermead club at Beale a couple of weeks ago... So may get it there.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. They have advertised in Marine Modelling Jan2015 and the contact details are the same as on their web site. I did notice that they have extended holidays and may not be open from mid Dec to 12 Jan. Also noted they are open 10am to 3pm so may not answer calls outside this timeframe. The e-mails should be answered however. They do not indicate which model shows they are attending but will be at Alexander Palace on the 17th. They usually attend the E Port spring show in March at the

. I chose to pay on receipt and made payment once the goods arrived. Delivery was not quick and I believe it was two weeks after I ordered. Perhaps their order and delivery system is better structured towards this method as they are a manufacturer rather than a retail outlet. I hope you manage to get a satisfactory solution.

    Edmund Gardner Liverpool Pilot Boat
Decided to take a break from the hull construction and make the davits which are quite a complicated affair. There are two types of boats on the Edmund Gardner. Lifeboats and Jolly Boats. Both of which have different davits. I made plastic templates for the various parts and on the last model made of the Pilot Boat I got copies made on a CNC machine in plastic. I don't have access to the CNC now so these templates were used as masters for moulds and the parts were made in hard white metal, (pewter). I suppose I could have made them all separately in plastic but Steve at Scale Hobbies Skelmersdale offered to mould them for me. The photo shows the plastic masters with the number required on each part. For those of you who do not know what she looks like please see attached photo of the real thing in the Canning Dock within the Albert Dock complex at Liverpool part of the Maritime museum collection

    Propulsion
The boat was completed in December 2012, trying to replicate the Meteorite engines was a no-no, there simply was not enough room after fitting micro servos for the water pump and lights and then the 12v 7ah PB battery along with fuses for each motor's esc. initial runs were carried out at Sheringham pool but it was too small to accommodate the boat's speed, otherwise all was ok. Ships Gear includes the folding stepped casualty boarding ladder, Scrambling Nets, Davit (of course), working lights and monitors, Hard Suction Hoses and complimentary fittings to scale, 2 Suction Wrenches, Foam Tanks, Deck Filling points for Petrol, Water & Foam Compound, Tow Hook, Engine oil tank fillers. The Sick Bay is furnished with bunks, blankets and pillows, floor standing table with fiddles, drawers below bunks, First Aid Cabinet, hatchway steps. Wheelhouse is fitted with Blumels type wheel, twin throttle controls, instrument panel and Kent Screen. The wings that caused the delay in completion of the boat were long ago completed and the plane has done many flights and is always ready for good weather windows. Foolishly perhaps I kept an expenditure log on the 46" Fireboat, some ยฃ1300 were spent, and well worth it I think as it is a Museum piece added to my ever growing collection. Photos? Some I've already uploaded to the site but there are 20 in all best suited to a CD or Stick. Jim

    Plans, photos, etc
HI Martin, Sorry, I know nothing of the Kielcraft kits, but I would say that it is a copy of the original boat, and given the age, I am certain that if you could have the plans enlarged so that they are readable, this may give you a clue as to exactly what the boat was. On top of that, if you can ascertain the original type of boat, then the Maritime Museum would be your best bet for Lines, General Arrangement and what the deck fittings are (size) and where they go. Seattle Fireboats
Looking for any available plans for Seattle's Fireboats. Plans for the Alki, Duwamish, Snoqualimie, Leschi. I would like to attempt to scratch build one of these boats. Any help would be appreciated. I am a land-locked firefighter that loves fireboats. Tim S. It is notoriously difficult to find plans of fireboat, especially early fireboats. I would try to find the name of the constructing boatyard and contact the historical museums in that area. Mike
