    EarlyVosper M.T.B by Simplas
Found on E Bay but sold in June of this year, a 42 inch kit of a Simplas Marine Construction Vosper M.T.B. It would appear that there are not many about now. I built one in 1972 and the kit contained a fibreglass hull with all fittings including the guns being in cast metal. Deck and superstructure were plywood and the boat was a model of an early Vosper as it had a very narrow beam and torpedo tubes were towards the stern. I fitted a DC Sabre 1.5cc diesel but had to add a lot of ballast which resulted in a sharp drop in performance. This was solved by replacing the Sabre with a Fuji 15 marine version glowplug engine . The boat was free running and as I was on an apprentice engineers pay and could not afford r.c.as I was having to support an ageing Mini. This was my transport from Ellesmere Port to the boating lake in New
    brighton
. If I had bought a Taycol Supermarine motor it would have solved all my problems as the battery would have been the ballast. Boaty ๐Ÿ˜

Great job being done there Martin. My memories were of my Veron Viceroy in the 1960s with Taycol Asteroid sailing on New

model boating lake rapidly going through 4.5 volt cycle lamp batteries wired up in series. I am made up to see a very original Crash Tender as the one I have now is a 1962 version I restored in 2014 from a wreck that was about to be binned which I bought for next to nothing from another person. in Ellesmere Port . On examination there was no evidence of the boat having an I.C engine but I did manage to find some mounting holes which appeared to match those of a Taycol Standard. This was a coincidence as Taycol did use photos of a 34 inch Crash Tender powered by the Standard in some of their advertisments including the leaflet that was supplied in the box with their range of motors. It's a sad day!.
Norman, that's a nice story. I got to know New
    brighton
well as my wife befriended a lady from Wallasey and supported her all the way through her nursing degree, to the point that her friend asked us to go up for her graduation in the Anglican cathedral. We were very keen to see what real life was like Oooop Norf and we booked into the then almost brand new Travel Lodge which was doing super deals. We had a view over the Mersey and the lighthouse at New
    brighton
and a huge sea lake that nobody ever used. When I discovered what an insult of a splash had been "retained" for the club as a model pond I nearly cried. Anyway, from the moment we stepped off the train at Lime Street and were met by Kelly and her daughter, we found the most friendly and warm people we have encountered anywhere in Britain and we've been around a bit. The next morning we found a lovely cafe just off the seafront that did a giant breakfast and while I was in the model shop next door (yes, REALLY!) my wife arranged a tattoo! At her age. The model shop owner came originally from my Wife's home town here and the lady in the cafe was originally from my home town in Essex, but both had Scouse accents and were as warm as all the other people we met. We were treated like VIPs the whole weekend. We also saw Hoylake pond which is the biggest I've seen at a seaside location. Watching traffic on the Mersey was fascinating and yes we, too, went on the ferry for an extended trip up the river and back with a commentary. If it weren't so bloody far away it would be a regular destination for us. Oh and yes I not only remember the VIP boats, but had some when I was a bit of a collector of such. They had a tendency to warp, like their slot cars. Cheers, Martin

Martin you do have a way with words, I like it!, yes, and steam locomotives run on at least ten times the pressure of a steam driven boat. Happy memory's of the old New

lake, my nan and mum would take me over from Liverpool on the ferry, which in those days went to New
    brighton
, with my pride and joy under my arm, my "victory models fire boat" remember the one? all plastic with twin brass screws driven by a mighty midget motor. The old lake was demolished approx' 10 to 15 years ago and the new one constructed 30 yards further up. I was there as demolition was going on and the old lake was a large heap of concrete and rubble fenced off to the public. Do you know to this day I so so regret not squeezing through the fence and taking a hand size piece of the concrete side wall, the concrete wall I would have lent over 1000 times as a young boy of seven to launch my boats.

Considering you can't run a pressurised boiler without a Vulcan steam certificate, there is no justification for banning steam, like New
    brighton
has. Mind you, when I saw what a silly little puddle they'd been left after the new developments on that town's seafront (hotel and retail) I wondered why they bothered turning up at all, but on 2 occasions I watched while I was staying there to visit a friend with my wife, there were two old boys with tugs and one of those had forgotten his batteries! Otherwise a Dad with a small boy and his off the shelf speedboat and even that was scowled at by the old farts. if a boat has a Mamod type of boiler it's not even considered a pressure vessel as its capacity is too low as is its "pressure", so you're covered all round. No need to ban anything as usual. Many parks have live steam railways and if they went bang they'd get their windows blown out in the town hall! Martin

Hi Steve Its fresh water but the much larger Marine Lake a quarter of a mile up the road is salt water. I don't know if you are allowed to sail models there. I used it once in the 1990s with a fast electric but had to flush out the cooling system after. Went in the early morning when it was quiet so I didn't get spotted. Boaty๐Ÿ˜Š

lake is ideal as it has parking close by and it appears to be very clean. Easy to launch your models as water level is high by having raised concrete walls around the perimeter. For speed enthusiasts there is a much larger lake on Wirral in Gautby Rd were I.C models are allowed and the lake also hosts an excellent model yacht club. Boaty๐Ÿ˜Š

An hour to two hours sailing and natter to other members then an hours drive home. As I'm a pensioner I can't afford more than once a month. (Wirral), Hoylake, West Kirby (Ashton Park) Gautby Road (Birkenhead) all on the Wirral Peninsula, and all within 30 mins of each other, are public lakes, anyone can sail on them, with the exception of ic and I believe only NB allows steam. Gautby road will allow ic, they have a club that races there on certain days. Out of courtesy, if the clubs are in attendance, its nuce to say hello. Ashton Park is an ornamental lake with wildlife, so sailing area is a bit restricted, and you can get a lot of public "tut tuts" if sailing in nesting season etc. This lake might have private permission, and tbh isn't worth the mither when the other lakes are so close. Gautby road is by far the best, however in an area that attracts a load of kids, and the odd "tinny" drinker. I go there with an eye to the surroundings, if you know what I mean, its got one way in, one way out, but is a fantastic lake with water that is right to the top. Hop through the Mersey tunnel, and you also have newshaw Park in Liverpool, 20 mins away, big lake with a club, and public. We are well served in this area๐Ÿ‘ To give you an idea of the lakes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DUO2JS8FfY My 4 ft Fireboat at Hoylake (that box has now been removed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5-YmmElIfk My 4 ft Huntsman at Gautby Road (not great quality sorry)

Hi Doug I knew you would have a more detailed answer. I agree any interference would be on one channel. Problem is not all cheap Chinese imports hop over the entire band, tending to pick one or two uncluttered channels when they switch on and intermittent interference could be a problem. As you say probably unlikely but we used to have a spot in the old New

Correct onetenor, the original pool was only about 2 feet deep. However when the council agreed to the supermarket next to it it had to be moved. They promised that they would build the new one with the same amount of water, they did!! by increasing the depth and reducing the surface area, hence leaving the model boaters with a smaller usable pool. Never ever trust local councils!!!!

I'm not absolutely sure but I think is only a few feet deep and wadeable. It has to be for public safety .Novice boaters being what they are etc. Originally marshland it was turned into a water park with slides etc. An additional reason for being shallow I think. it is the only salt-water lake left in North Wales.Along side the lake runs the oldest miniature railway in Britain. . I believe they are all Public and the clubs will certainly welcome fellow modellers. Just make sure you introduce yourself before switching on and sailing to avoid any frequency clashes! They may require you have Public Liability insurance if you are sailing when the club is in attendance, and as they are in a Public area it would be in your best interests to have such cover. I sail in Cheshire with Crewe MBC at Boundary Park, near Knutsford on a private lake but we welcome visiting members and have Club insurance to cover visiting modellers as guests. I'm assuming you are not talking IC, steam or very fast electrics as many waters have restrictions on such use. Dave

I used to sail there in the 1970s and it is a good site. As previously mentioned there are times when the wildlife and Public can be a problem but the setting right on the promenade is beautiful and you get lots of fresh sea air. There is also another similar sized lake outside Hoylake Lifeboat station and West Kirby have access to the lake in the park so the area is well served for model boaters. boating lake is Ok, about chest deep should your boat sink and it is open to the public, it is right on the promenade. They have had swans and seagulls on the pool, kids swimming, kids wanting to touch boats if they get close to the edge(the boats that is) and once had a car in there I believe. There is a club that sails there with nice helpful members. They have a small storage container on site. Handy access for cars with a small car park adjacent to the pool.

Hi Dave, good to hear from you (sorry to hijack thread). 4 footer came out two years ago, Huntsman once in 2016, its over 3 years since the 3 footer got wet! Orca once in 2016. I did build the PCF which I really liked, but it went immediately as too many people messaged saying they wanted it, so it funded some RC plane gear, which I am really into now. I sold a load of bits and bobs at the Blackpool show a few months ago, didn't renew with St Helens in 2015, or 2016, and wont this year. However.... Robs excellent blog has got me interested again, and Stephen kindly did a bespoke 3 d printing project on something rc related, info and pics to follow when its finished! Back on track... George, I'm going to advise only things I have done, or used, I'm not one to say do this, or that, but actually I have not done it myself. No doubt others will disagree, but this is my opinion only. Best performance in terms of speed is brushless, and lipo. Forget fear of fire and explosions, this only happens with abuse, and they are the common use with rc planes, helicopters, cars, its only boats that are really stuck in the dark ages with technology that have this big fear of brushless systems and lipos! However, to get initially set up, they do take more understanding and initial cash outlay, as you need a specific charger for one, and you do need to understand what you are doing. Brushless motors will unlease the power far more than brushed, and are usually lighter. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-t600-brushless-outrunner-for-600-heli-880kv.html This motor is an example, there are much cheaper ones with similar specs, but I have used this motor in various applications, the most similar to your boat being my large Huntsman, with this motor on 6 cells lipo I achieved 25mph, but speed might not be what you want. So if you have the fast engine in your car, say a v12 Ferrari, if you run it on cheap fuel, it wont perform, same here, nicads and nimhs batteries are easy to maintain, you can drain them dead flat, but will give cheap fuel performance, like a bath tap trickling when the shower is on at the same time, and as they are dying technology, are expensive for what they are. Lipo is like turning up both bath taps and the force floods out, but now the tank will empty quicker, so you have less run time ๐Ÿ˜Š If brushless, its a specific speed controller, https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking-50a-boat-esc-4a-ubec.html and you pay extra for reversing (other rc disciplines don't need reverse) and a marine esc might need to be water cooled, however, decent brushed motor speed controllers are not exactly cheap, so now you know why budget is important to give advice, you could be spending ยฃ100 here just to get up and running. Look at my 4 foot fireboat build blog, as its twin screw (personally a boat this size is better twin screw) you can get by with cheaper motors, mine where ยฃ30 the pair, I use lipo for all my boats, so I have the batteries, and are familiar with using them, the speed controllers where about ยฃ40 the pair, and if I was buying batts then probably another ยฃ40, so it all adds up! Single screw, less batteries. You could power with nimhs, and it might be acceptable ,performance for you. If your location is Ellesmere Port, have a Sunday morning drive to Hoylake, then New
    brighton
, and maybe take in St Helens Liverpool, and Runcorn, see boats in action, see what sort of performance suits you, and rethink the budget, what do you want to spend? Then you need the transmitter and receiver (if you don't already have these) the fittings (see Robs build blog) a prop shaft, and a suitable propeller I am North Wirral, you are more than welcome to come and have a chat and see some boats, but unfortunately I'm deep into another rc project for the next few weeks, once that is done I can share some time, if you want! Don't worry, I'm not all about speed, I can do brushed motors and nimhs and get a result, Any questions, just ask, Paul PS... Looks like a nice clean boat you have there๐Ÿ˜‰

    Queen lifeboat
This was a static model, that the gentleman I got it off had it for two years and when I asked why don't you put it in a box his reply was the box would be to high at 36" so I said to him is it radio control,NO static model only but can be converted,so I brought it and also showed him that if you move the tube slider on the mast it folds(one unhappy chappy),so I set about radio controlling it with a smoke unit(water) and it gets quite a bit of attention at shows because it's different, the model is based on the Queen from new

For Sale 1/20 th ''Empire'' Tug.
I have just restored a large "Empire" tug, She is 1600 mm long and weighs about 60 Lbs. in sailing trim. She comes with a planet T5, Two 6v batteries, one for running and one for lighting. There is a stand and a launching trolley. As can be seen I have done a bit of detailing, with a galley, mess room, W.C. and shower, and a store room. I have made a boiler top and the top of a triple expansion engine. There is lead ballast that has all been labelled, as to its position in the hull. I have put the switch's in one of the lifebelt lockers, so you don't have to keep lifting the superstructure every time to run it. I only started doing this hobby a couple of years ago, I get more pleasure restoring them, than I do sailing them. The last picture is the before one, she was originally powered with a steam engine but was removed by the previous owner. The hull is wood, that has been resin coated, and painted with many coats. I live in the

HI Mike Welcome to the site. I suggest you research and find a suitable water where you can sail your boat. Many local venues do not allow IC engined boats on their waters so it is important you find a site before you finally choose your propulsion. There used to be fast offshore racing at New
    brighton
in the Mersey but I don't know if it is still functioning. Modern fast electric boats now use brushless motors which far out perform their brushed equivalent and have comparable power to weight ratios to IC motors. There are several fast electric suppliers who will be able to advice on the type and size of prop to suit your model. I suggest you Google to find your nearest supplier.
