Very interesting project. I'm sure I saw a model
catamaran
work boat, probably on our lake, recently, I must look out for it and see how he has done things. On thinking about it, it may have been at an open day.
Best of luck with it.

Thanks for your reply. I am more of a speed freak. I love the Vosper /MTB's style hulls as you can really push them to there limits, as I can also with the deep V huntsman style hulls. My Proboat Miss Geico
catamaran
I can run flat out even on turns. But am unsure about fitting an out runner, I have scaled down the Crash Tender to 28" and have just put in a small outrunner but very apprehensive of running her. This is because i'm unsure of overheating and catching fire. Silly rally as she is a fireboat. But as you have one in your Crash Tender with no problems, then I will finish her off and give her a run. Thanks for your help. I am watching this build as eagerly as I did your wonderful Crash Tender. I cannot wait to see the en result and some video of her on water. I'm sad I wasn't able to get along to the show this weekend.

Mast fittings
I've sailed and re-rigged small full scale yachts and
catamaran
s all my life and never seen a fitting like that. Perhaps it was put there as a halyard or stay 'tidy' for storage purposes? looks more like an upside down boat cover tie down clip or part of a latch. Perhaps try the door and lock section at your local hardware super store. Found this on google. As the other guys have said though, probably hand made. Usually, no rigging fittings on yachts have square edges unless they are part of a fitting.

I agree with the weight being shifted forward a iittle bit.Bow high in a
catamaran
will catch too much air causing the boat to flip. All it takes is a good gust of wind.Good speed on the boat. After trials you'll have a good fast boat.

hi Everyone! just want to solicit some advice. i'll be asking the local boat maker here in my place to build a
catamaran
style boat in few days time. i decided to use the dimensions as follows; LOA = 1.5m, B= 1m, D= 0.5m. both hulls will be identical. boat capacity will be approx 20-30kg(motors and electronics onboard). with this in mind, i'm soliciting suggestions for the appropriate prop size and motor to be used. electric or gas engines? im planning to use one motor for each hull. thanks in advance for the comment guys!

Hi Analyst,
Sounds like a really big project.
I think maybe you should try a tri-
catamaran
configuration!
you say you want it to be stable in the water, I think a tri-
catamaran
shape would be some what more stable than just a regular
catamaran
! This is just my thoughts though, good luck on your project. please keep us updated, also start a build blog of your boat concept.....

@figtree7nts - I'm planning to build a USV type of boat with general specs;
*
catamaran
type hull (not yet sure of the dimensions but based on my own research maybe L- 58", beam - 20" for each hull)
*long range (20-30kms)
*cruise speed (3-4 km/h)
on board components
*FPV cameras (at least 2)
*motors (not sure what type but I'm leaning more on electric than gas)
*GPS and antennas for long range capability.
i want to start with the basics first and probably will include add-ons in navigation in the future. i just want to have a reliable running platform at first. it will be used in salt water environment. I'm thinking of a twin hull to make it more stable out in the waters. it will not be deployed in rough weather but i think it would be better to have a twin hull for stability. I already have a Taranis Tx and Rx which i used for simulators before.
thanks for link on the website. indeed they have lots of stuffs. my only concern is they are based in England so i will pay for multiple export fees until it reaches the Philippines(sad reality) From England they will have it delivered in the US(virtual address) then from the US to my country through a local courier. I cannot let the store deliver it directly to the Philippines because the Customs here will surely rain me with custom's taxes and it will require me to personally pick up the items. but i'll give it a try first and see the difference. it will be my first time to order on UK based websites.

Missing Aerokits models
Hi, I learn from this site that Aerokits made a Tara yacht and a SeaHawk
catamaran
. I had no idea they did these and would very much like to build them. Does anyone have the plans for them and would consider doing me some copies?
Or maybe somebody has the models in a state and would consider selling to this Aerokits nut?
Cheers,

In order to recharge my receiver batteries located in one of the hulls I have to remove the hatch cover which is secured with waterproof sticky tape.
Not only is this fiddly but waterproof sticky tape is not a cheap item.
The ideal would be a waterproof socket on the deck into which I could plug the charger.
Any thoughts please?

It is not a good idea to charge batteries in hulls where there is no chance of air circulation and condensation can occur. I have seen the after effects of an exploding battery and now always remove my batteries to a safe place to charge. The Rx will also benefit from fresh air to prevent condensation and electrolysis from the residual charges on capacitors.
I have a friend who uses a plug socket on his deck with a shorted plug sealed with heat shrink that works well at the lake but he removes the batteries to charge after sailing.
I use vehicle sign makers sticky tape (available in all colours) to seal my yachts and have no problems.
Hope you find a solution that works for you.

University Project - Hull Fabrication So Far
HI guys, hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year!
Thought I would upload a few photos of the hull I formed over the holidays for my university project for you to see and give tips on etc. If you so wish.
For the project, we are asked to design and build our own RC RUDDERLESS BOAT. It was decided to use foam as the material for the hull as It Is cheap (we are students after all), and also very easy to mold to the desired shape.
A
catamaran
design was opted for also as we felt we would gain not only more stability, but load bearing and component space on the deck.
The hull took me around 2 days to complete, however this was mainly due to my sometimes unhealthy need for a cuppa.
The hull was fabricated In 2 sections: top, and bottom (consisting of the two pods). The tools used were: Hacksaw, hacksaw blade, Stanley blade, chisel, file, drill with an M10 drill-bit, and sandpaper/sanding-block.
The two sections are yet to be glued together. An acrylic-based coating Is to be donned, also a coat of paint for added protection against the water.
My one major concern Is water Ingress to the two motor housings via the hole where the shaft will protrude. How can I solve this problem?
Thanks again for all the help!
Boat dimensions are approx as follows - L 350mm; B 225mm; D 120mm.

Hull Materials
HI guys, just posting regarding a group project I am Involved In!
I am currently studying MEng Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde University and In my 3rd year.
We have been tasked this year with building a remote controlled rudderless boat on a budget of ยฃ100.
We have decided on a
catamaran
style design, and we feel we should opt for a foam based hull design, with It to be epoxied at a later date.
Any help regarding the topic would be much appreciated!
Cheers guys, all the best!

Hull Materials
The slalom is really just to show off just how good the directional control of the boat is without the use of a rudder. The slalom course will be set by ourselves based on how well we think the boat will perform.
We had a toss-up over using a more stable option of hull (
catamaran
) and a more nimble hull type (single hull). We opted for the
catamaran
style hull as we felt the stability of the boat was more Important than the maneouverability. We saw videos of the previous years effort and felt we would like the boat to go a lot faster than theirs.
The plans so far are to have:
-
catamaran
style hull
-Length of boat to be around 350-400mm
-Have two motors each connected to a prop. Motors ideally to be reversible to have much better turning action.
-To have a load bearing capability. So a small loading bay would need to be present.
-Boat to be controlled by WiI style remote if possible.
-Operating time of 15 minutes
-Operated from a distance of 7.5m
The kort nozzle idea looks great, how easy would it be to Implement into the design?
I'll have a look at the different motors on offer. We set out a budget below as follows:
-Motors ยฃ30 - ยฃ40
-Control ยฃ30 - ยฃ40
-Props ยฃ10 - ยฃ15
-Hull ยฃ10 - ยฃ20
Very Impressive pictures of the tug boat you have, looks like you spent a great amount of time on it, looks brilliant ๐ !!

Interesting conversion of the wave height - in my experience water can not be scaled!
I see the word slalom is used - does this equate to some form of race? Ie will you be competing with others on a timed basis? Manouverability and speed are not really that compatible so you
catamaran
would be ideal for speed but not so good at turns,
If you are allowed to use a kortz nozzle this would give good control. Even better if you were allowed to move the nozzle round the prop in a vertical axis giving very powerful direction control.
I had a Model Slipway Al Khubar tug that used two nozzles, those were fixed and used rudders as per full size. However steering was best done by controlling the motor speeds and direction. One forward and one reverse resulted in a spin on the spot. I used the same in another Tug Eldergarth 48" 1:32 scale (Mobile Marine) and this uses moveable nozzles (no actual rudder) and this also turns on the spot.
Attaching a couple of pics of the Eldergarth togive you the idea. The real boat worked the Mersey estuary for many years so would withstand the Sea State stated.
I use a couple of Smiths Fan heater motors with a large 12v SLA, twin Electronize ESC's (15amp). Mtronik do similar which may more suit your budget.
Hope this helps. Post details of your plans so others can join in the discussion. ๐

Hull Materials
HI Alexander
Welcome to the site.
Are there any other parameters / restrictions on what you can build?
Will the boat have to navigate a straight or curved course?
What is your definition of "rudder"?
Is your
catamaran
to be wind or motor powered?
Foam should work well for the hull if covered in cloth and resin for strength,
Using a
catamaran
should allow you to achieve a degree of steering control by varying the motive power and direction on each hull.
Any further advice ๐ really depends on your answers to the above questions.
Good luck
