    Model Boat Club
We formed in about 1989 as "The Boat Club" based at the
    ellesmere port
Boat Museum. In the nineties we changed the name to the
    ellesmere port
Model Boat Club. We meet and sail at the Museum but now have a pool at The Hooton Park Trust site. We are currently 30 members strong and have models of every type.

A ha! I have just received from a friend a scan of a crumpled clipping from some magazine. It would seem it was taken at a boat show in
    ellesmere port
. I have googled but although shown are models none show the crane. What year, i have no idea. According to the text the model was that belonging to the late Eric Bell and which had been loaned to the show by a Dave Morris. Now to find out who is this Dave Morris and whether he still has the model. Toby

Hello there epmbcmember. I went to visit you site a couple of weeks ago to sus out the approach. A great pool and facilities. Met a very helpful lady who give me a look around and a membership form. I am a little limited in movement and your setup looks to be at the right height, approachable and no parking problems. I live in North Wales and will be sending the membership form in as soon as I can find my cheque Book! All the best. NPJ.

    EarlyVosper M.T.B by Simplas
Found on E Bay but sold in June of this year, a 42 inch kit of a Simplas Marine Construction Vosper M.T.B. It would appear that there are not many about now. I built one in 1972 and the kit contained a fibreglass hull with all fittings including the guns being in cast metal. Deck and superstructure were plywood and the boat was a model of an early Vosper as it had a very narrow beam and torpedo tubes were towards the stern. I fitted a DC Sabre 1.5cc diesel but had to add a lot of ballast which resulted in a sharp drop in performance. This was solved by replacing the Sabre with a Fuji 15 marine version glowplug engine . The boat was free running and as I was on an apprentice engineers pay and could not afford r.c.as I was having to support an ageing Mini. This was my transport from
    ellesmere port
to the boating lake in New Brighton. If I had bought a Taycol Supermarine motor it would have solved all my problems as the battery would have been the ballast. Boaty 😁

    54 year old Crash Tender
Great job being done there Martin. My memories were of my Veron Viceroy in the 1960s with Taycol Asteroid sailing on New Brighton model boating lake rapidly going through 4.5 volt cycle lamp batteries wired up in series. I am made up to see a very original Crash Tender as the one I have now is a 1962 version I restored in 2014 from a wreck that was about to be binned which I bought for next to nothing from another person. in
    ellesmere port
. On examination there was no evidence of the boat having an I.C engine but I did manage to find some mounting holes which appeared to match those of a Taycol Standard. This was a coincidence as Taycol did use photos of a 34 inch Crash Tender powered by the Standard in some of their advertisments including the leaflet that was supplied in the box with their range of motors. Boaty😊😊

Until last year we hosted the March Model Boat Show at the

We are planning, however, to have a Model Show in May 2019 at our new venue. Hopefully many of the traders will support this, watch this space!!!!

The pool is going to be bigger next year. Hooton is a great venue to be honest. Have a look at the photo it was taken at the beginning of the year mate.

Hi George, nice to hear from you, dare I ask you have the Fireboat any further on yet!😁 Nice site at Hooton Hangers, but my understanding from epm's post is it was a temporary pool and not there now? I was hoping they had a lake, it would have been a spectacular site. I recall that there was some sailing years ago in raddle wharf on the other side of the museum, over by the hotel. Nice venue again, but very very deep and launching was a problem. Shame to see a club struggling for a venue

To answer NJP's question we can get a car within 30 feet of the temporary pond, less if you drive on the grass, the pool is about 12" deep. The pool has now been taken down for the winter but we have been asked to put a larger one up next year. There are toilets there although not 5 star, but these will be refurbished when there is cash available. The site is the Hooton Park Trust next to the old airfield. At the moment they are refurbishing the last hanger with a new Belfast truss roof. They do have a website and they are on facebook. You can also read about it if you type in RAF Hooton Park Airfield, which was opened in 1917 and closed in the 1950's I think. At one stage it was Liverpool Airport before Speke was opened.

There isn't Paul. The E Port club used to sail in the basins at the Boat Museum but this facility has, I believe, been withdrawn as well as the March Boat Show facility. The club was sailing at (I believe) the Vauxhall site in a temporary pond and there is talk of a March show at the former Hooton airfield site. Perhaps one of the club members could post details in the Model Boat Club Section, Please?

    Blackpool Model Boat Show
I was also at the Blackpool Model Boat show on Saturday and was quite impressed with the show in general, it's always very easy to criticise venues and I accept that the Norbreck Castle is not perfect but I didn't have any problem with the lighting nor the number of Traders or exhibitors, I do like the fact that everything is on one level and easily negotiable. I am amazed that there are comparisons with the likes of
    ellesmere port
and Haydock Park in particular as I have been to both and find negotiating the various separate rooms and different levels a nightmare, I always leave both venues wondering whether I have seen everything. As a modelling fraternity we are in danger of losing these exhibitions and having to rely on internet purchases.

    Blackpool Model Boat Show
I had a look at Blackpool show on Saturday. Sadly, it is not nearly as good as it used to be and there appeared to be no new ideas about featuring the show. I did get a few bits 'n bobs that I needed but I could also have got them elsewhere without paying Β£6 for the privilege. I thought the lighting was reasonable, although slightly darker in some corners. All in all, I thought Haydock Park was better (but more expensive) and I prefer

    34'' sea commander Aerokits kit
Hi Garth, I have my second Sea Commander which I still use , but the first one I sold 13 years ago. I never actually built a Sea Commander but the one I have now and the previous model I picked up cheap and restored them. You do get things like this that come up on Ebay occasionally and though restoration appears sometimes to be challenging I find a lot of satisfaction when the work is completed. My first Sea Commander I found underneath a table on a stall in
    ellesmere port
Market and it was about to be binned. The stall holder was glad to accept five pounds for it and it turned out that the hull was quite solid and all I had to do was to make the cabin roof, sand it all down, paint it then fit the motor and radio. I hope you get your Sea Commander, they are lovely boats from yesteryear and even a new build is very rewarding. Boaty😊

I like the Precedent Huntsman very much and I built one from the kit many years ago. it was the wooden hull version and it was quite fast with an MFA 850 Torpedo motor running on 12 volts. I sold it in 2004 and now I wish I hadnt. However I bought a 34 inch fibreglass hull this year at the

show and I wondered if Precedent are still manufacturing kits as I have no plans for the superstructure. Boaty😎
