    It's a sad day!.
Norman, that's a nice story. I got to know New Brighton well as my wife befriended a lady from Wallasey and supported her all the way through her nursing degree, to the point that her friend asked us to go up for her graduation in the Anglican cathedral. We were very keen to see what real life was like Oooop Norf and we booked into the then almost brand new Travel Lodge which was doing super deals. We had a view over the Mersey and the lighthouse at New Brighton and a huge sea lake that nobody ever used. When I discovered what an insult of a splash had been "retained" for the club as a model pond I nearly cried. Anyway, from the moment we stepped off the train at Lime Street and were met by Kelly and her daughter, we found the most friendly and warm people we have encountered anywhere in Britain and we've been around a bit. The next morning we found a lovely cafe just off the seafront that did a giant breakfast and while I was in the model shop next door (yes, REALLY!) my wife arranged a tattoo! At her age. The model shop owner came originally from my Wife's home town here and the lady in the cafe was originally from my home town in Essex, but both had Scouse accents and were as warm as all the other people we met. We were treated like VIPs the whole weekend. We also saw
    hoylake
pond which is the biggest I've seen at a seaside location. Watching traffic on the Mersey was fascinating and yes we, too, went on the ferry for an extended trip up the river and back with a commentary. If it weren't so bloody far away it would be a regular destination for us. Oh and yes I not only remember the VIP boats, but had some when I was a bit of a collector of such. They had a tendency to warp, like their slot cars. Cheers, Martin

Attended the event again this year. Wow! was impressed. 28 traders 21 clubs according to the brochure. The place was very busy and lots to see lots to buy. Lighting was good, refreshments available in the hotel front lounge. Not just boats but trucks etc in the other room next to main hall. Ian from Component Shop has really turned this event round.

    new brighton model boat lake
    New Brighton (Wirral),
    hoylake
, West Kirby (Ashton Park) Gautby Road (Birkenhead) all on the Wirral Peninsula, and all within 30 mins of each other, are public lakes, anyone can sail on them, with the exception of ic and I believe only NB allows steam. Gautby road will allow ic, they have a club that races there on certain days. Out of courtesy, if the clubs are in attendance, its nuce to say hello. Ashton Park is an ornamental lake with wildlife, so sailing area is a bit restricted, and you can get a lot of public "tut tuts" if sailing in nesting season etc. This lake might have private permission, and tbh isn't worth the mither when the other lakes are so close. Gautby road is by far the best, however in an area that attracts a load of kids, and the odd "tinny" drinker. I go there with an eye to the surroundings, if you know what I mean, its got one way in, one way out, but is a fantastic lake with water that is right to the top. Hop through the Mersey tunnel, and you also have newshaw Park in Liverpool, 20 mins away, big lake with a club, and public. I used to sail there in the 1970s and it is a good site. As previously mentioned there are times when the wildlife and Public can be a problem but the setting right on the promenade is beautiful and you get lots of fresh sea air. There is also another similar sized lake outside
    hoylake
Lifeboat station and West Kirby have access to the lake in the park so the area is well served for model boaters. All have resident clubs so plenty of helpful and friendly advice. Dave

is just close Dave, and you can park close, its usually quiet, so for testing etc its fine, just a bit small for the bigger scale boats. New Brighton is very busy on these light evenings, parking can be a problem in summer. My other local lake is gautby, a superb lake, big, easy access to all sides, but its not in the best of places. I could go over to Newsham in Liverpool, but you run the risk of kids again, and fishermen, hence

Hi Dave, good to hear from you (sorry to hijack thread). 4 footer came out two years ago, Huntsman once in 2016, its over 3 years since the 3 footer got wet! Orca once in 2016. I did build the PCF which I really liked, but it went immediately as too many people messaged saying they wanted it, so it funded some RC plane gear, which I am really into now. I sold a load of bits and bobs at the Blackpool show a few months ago, didn't renew with St Helens in 2015, or 2016, and wont this year. However.... Robs excellent blog has got me interested again, and Stephen kindly did a bespoke 3 d printing project on something rc related, info and pics to follow when its finished! Back on track... George, I'm going to advise only things I have done, or used, I'm not one to say do this, or that, but actually I have not done it myself. No doubt others will disagree, but this is my opinion only. Best performance in terms of speed is brushless, and lipo. Forget fear of fire and explosions, this only happens with abuse, and they are the common use with rc planes, helicopters, cars, its only boats that are really stuck in the dark ages with technology that have this big fear of brushless systems and lipos! However, to get initially set up, they do take more understanding and initial cash outlay, as you need a specific charger for one, and you do need to understand what you are doing. Brushless motors will unlease the power far more than brushed, and are usually lighter. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-t600-brushless-outrunner-for-600-heli-880kv.html This motor is an example, there are much cheaper ones with similar specs, but I have used this motor in various applications, the most similar to your boat being my large Huntsman, with this motor on 6 cells lipo I achieved 25mph, but speed might not be what you want. So if you have the fast engine in your car, say a v12 Ferrari, if you run it on cheap fuel, it wont perform, same here, nicads and nimhs batteries are easy to maintain, you can drain them dead flat, but will give cheap fuel performance, like a bath tap trickling when the shower is on at the same time, and as they are dying technology, are expensive for what they are. Lipo is like turning up both bath taps and the force floods out, but now the tank will empty quicker, so you have less run time 😊 If brushless, its a specific speed controller, https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking-50a-boat-esc-4a-ubec.html and you pay extra for reversing (other rc disciplines don't need reverse) and a marine esc might need to be water cooled, however, decent brushed motor speed controllers are not exactly cheap, so now you know why budget is important to give advice, you could be spending £100 here just to get up and running. Look at my 4 foot fireboat build blog, as its twin screw (personally a boat this size is better twin screw) you can get by with cheaper motors, mine where £30 the pair, I use lipo for all my boats, so I have the batteries, and are familiar with using them, the speed controllers where about £40 the pair, and if I was buying batts then probably another £40, so it all adds up! Single screw, less batteries. You could power with nimhs, and it might be acceptable ,performance for you. If your location is Ellesmere Port, have a Sunday morning drive to
    hoylake
, then New Brighton, and maybe take in St Helens Liverpool, and Runcorn, see boats in action, see what sort of performance suits you, and rethink the budget, what do you want to spend? Then you need the transmitter and receiver (if you don't already have these) the fittings (see Robs build blog) a prop shaft, and a suitable propeller I am North Wirral, you are more than welcome to come and have a chat and see some boats, but unfortunately I'm deep into another rc project for the next few weeks, once that is done I can share some time, if you want! Don't worry, I'm not all about speed, I can do brushed motors and nimhs and get a result, Any questions, just ask, Paul PS... Looks like a nice clean boat you have thereπŸ˜‰

    Sailing a straight line
Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas. The shafts are parallel, but the angle of the photo may suggest otherwise. The rudders are not exactly parallel, but I find it hard to believe that the amount of mismatch can be the cause of the problem. I have been careful to do any tests when the water is calm and there is no wind, and run them in both directions ( as would be done on a measured mile), to try and eliminate extraneous influences. (Doesn't mean that's been entirely succesful, but enough to convince me they are minor effects.) I had previously contacted Max (4clubs) and knew that his model did not have this problem, so he couldn't help me at the time. I now learn that the
    hoylake
club has 3 models of this vessel and none have this problem. These models all have the rudders inline with the props, (so not true to the prototype, but each to his own.) This points to the offset rudders being a major contributor. I still plan to increase the size of the rudders, to see if that improves the directional stability.

    Starter boat plans
I see you reside on the Wirral and there are clubs at E Port, New Brighton,
    hoylake
and West Kirby. I suggest you visit on a sailing day and see what models are being sailed. if you talk to the members they will advise how they built/acquired their models and what size is viable for your chosen sailing water. With your previous experience you should have a good understanding of how models work but boats can take some time to complete so a bit of research may help you avoid some of the pitfalls and help you get a working model on the water fairly quickly. When you have chosen your model plan you will find plenty of advice on this site to help with any building problems. Good luck Dave

Until I moved I used to live on the Wirral and worked in Liverpool. The Ferry was always a good cheap way the cross the Mersey and also a good chance to see the ships on the water. Trips through the Birkenhead/Wallasey docks also provided a good chance to see ships up close. Most were working vessels and were certainly not bright and shiny, quite the opposite in fact. The sea is a harsh master and the evidence was all too plain to see. You could identify the recent paint jobs where damage had been repaired but where working parts exited the hull the rust was all too evident. Even the cruise ships and Manx Steamers were not all pristine but were better maintained, probably to keep the public happy. The New Brighton and
    hoylake
lifeboats were always kept pristine as they are today as are most pleasure yachts. At one time matt or silk paints were hard to find so early models tended to be shiny and weathering was not commonly practised. Modern paints are far more realistic and manufacturers now produce a whole range of accurate paints specifically for modelling. There are quite a few books and articles on producing a good effect, but it is a skill which will Improve with time.

This boat is scratch built on a Fiberglass Hull. The Lily was one of two ferries built in 1900. Her sister ship was the Rose. The superstructure of the model is largely light-ply and paneled to resemble the orginal. She had an open top deck and as you can see the navigation pods were open to the weather. A semaphore signal arm was included as radio was not yet used to communicate with each other on the Mersey. The model is approx1/48 scale and built from a couple of photos and sketches that exist. She is powered by two 340 electric motors and controlled with 2.4ghz radio. A 12 volt battery gives the power. Both decks are individually planked. She has sailed at

As you will see from video it operates on land and water. it is six wheel drive using differentials on all wheels. When in water it is prop drive. it has two small electric motors for power, the wheel drive being very low gearing (too low really it goes very slow on ground). it was completed in 2010, and is filmed sailing at the portable pond at Toys For Boys in Waterloo in 2010. it has sailed at

    Hello Model Boat World
HI Stephen Welcome to the site. I see you are in the Bidston area of the Wirral so are near to three local clubs at West Kirby,
    hoylake
and New Brighton. It can be helpful if you belong to a club when starting out as you can see the types of model available and talk to the owners and find out all the details you need to know. This is also helpful in choosing a model as you will need a venue to sail and some waters are not suitable for all model boats. Without knowing the type of model your are interested in building it is difficult make any suggestion. There is a major show, The Model Boat Convention taking place over the 24th and 25th of August at Haydock Racecourse so as this is in your area you may find something of interest from the Traders attending. You will certainly see a large selection of model boats from the model clubs who are attending There is a bring and buy so you may find a built / part built model that takes your fancy Your Planet set is a good starting point as you do not need to worry about frequency clashes or changing crystals. As a general rule fast planing type boats lend themselves to Brushless motors and a forward/reverse ESC is useful to get you out of trouble. Tugs and working/passenger vessels suit brushed motors but brushless motors are available that are suitable, again at an increased cost. Most marine brushed ESC's are forward / reverse. Batteries come in three main varieties: SLA - good if you have a large model that need lots of ballast; 6v or 12v with amp hour rates from 1.2 to 18 or more amps. Need to be charged over a period of time at constant voltage. Car battery chargers are npot suitable for this reason. NiMh - as favoured by the model car brigade - each cell is 1.2v and packs are typicaly 7.2 / 8.4 /9.6 etc. Amp hour rates are usually in MaHr 2300 being fairly typical. Lighter than lead acid and smaller so good for restricted space or where the ballast needs to be near the rear. Can be fast charged at constant current so favoured by the racing fraternity. LiPo - latest technology now favoured by car and aeromodellers due to the light weight and high power (Watts) available. Each cell is 3.7v and usually sold in packs of 1 to 6 cells. 7.4v and 11.1v are 2 and 3 cell versions. The capacity is again in mA and a 2300mA at 20C means you can draw 46Amps max. The higher the capacity the dearer the cost. LiPos can not be over charged or discharged even slightly so a balanced charger and a voltage cut out on the ESC are essential. Any servo will be suitable, and are available in most sizes. You won't need a very powerful servo so the cost should be about the Β£6 mark. Having shared this info I do urge that you seek help from a local club or modeller as your modelling skills will benefit from their knowledge and guidance, and you will avoid some of the pitfalls we have all suffered. Good luckl. if you go to Haydock I will be on the Crewe MBC stand πŸ˜€
