    1950s sea commander refurb.
Good to see an early Sea Commander being restored. My first experience of seeing a Sea Commander was in early 1961 when I was eight years old. I was in Coronation Park in Crosby just outside
    liverpool
and dad got talking to the owner who said he had been a radar technician in WW2 and he built the radio control himself. The motor of course being a Taycol. Many years later I restored two Sea Commanders and still have one of them which I sail quite often. Well done Aerokits. Boaty๐Ÿ˜Ž

    My other hobby
Good to see other PPLs and former PPLs on the Model Boats website. I took mine at
    liverpool
Airport known now as JLA (John Lennon Airport) in June 1984 and completed it in January 85. Trained with
    liverpool
Flying School aka Keenair in Cherokee 140s and a PA 38 Tomahawk. Later I moved into Air Nova which was also a
    liverpool
club and the actor Lewis Collins was also a member of that Club. At the time I was a member of Merseyside IVC (Inter Varsity Club) thus had plenty of passengers. One of them was Victoria Field, my former psychology lecturer who later became famous as a psychologist and writer. Eventually Air Nova moved to Hawarden Airport near Chester but the Club folded shortly after. I then joined the in house Club based at the field and I ceased flying in November 2016. Best flights were going over Snowdon VFR and down the Dee Valley. I also flew over Colwyn Bay to have a look at the boating lake though I haven't sailed there. I also saw the lakes at Llandudno West Shore and LLanfairfechan. The latter I am considering for sailing my fast electrics. Downside to PPL flying was the crosswind component of the aircraft being 17 knots , At Hawarden there is only one runway the 04/22 and
    liverpool
the 09/27. I did have to cancel many times due to this. Thankfully sailing model boats is much more enjoyable as we don't have that many snags to deal with and if the motor stops we don't have to do an emergency landing.๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Boaty

Hi Onetenor Fuji 15 was a good glow engine which I don't think it is manufactured any more. Aero version max B.H.P was just below .40 when tested. if it was in a model aircraft it would have been around .20 to .25 depending on prop size which was good then for a small capacity glowplug . Marine versions when on the water put out a little less and the water cooled jacket was never as efficient as the finned cylinder jacket of the aero version. My two Aerokits boats, the Sea Commander and the Crash Tender are powered by single Speed 600 motors running on either 8.4 or 9.6 volt Ni Mh batteries. Performance is equal to that of marine diesel power such as the 2.46 Ed Racer and D.C 2.46 Rapier, the latter I used to watch in the fast steering events in the early 1960s at Fleetwood and Coronation Park in Crosby just outside
    liverpool
. Taycol powered versions would be obviously slower due to the additional weight were far more reliable and you did not have to put up with injuries from excessive use of a starting cord with kids watching and "extracting the urine" shouting "why wont it go mister". Boaty

    A return to the hobby!
SLEC do have a good reputation and its great that the classic kits of old are back in production. The Sea Commander is one of my favourites as I restored one many years ago but foolishly sold it to fund my karting activities four years later. However in 2011 I found another one and restored that. This one I am keeping along with the 34 inch Crash Tender of 1962 vintage that I restored in 2014 being one that the former owner was about to place in a skip. I am interested in a Sea Rover as its a boat I never had. in the early 1960s when we lived in
    liverpool
, dad would take us up to Fleetwood to see the Aerokits display and watch the steering event on the big lake. Nostalgia aint what it used to be. Boaty๐Ÿ˜†

The faster ones were ignored unless too close for comfort. They just lifted off a yard and settled again. The birds not the boats๐Ÿ˜‹ The main lakes were "Boating Lakes" with rowing boats but noone moaned about them disturbing the birds. Actually noone moaned about models either. It's a sad day!.
Martin you do have a way with words, I like it!, yes, and steam locomotives run on at least ten times the pressure of a steam driven boat. Happy memory's of the old New Brighton lake, my nan and mum would take me over from
    liverpool
on the ferry, which in those days went to New Brighton, with my pride and joy under my arm, my "victory models fire boat" remember the one? all plastic with twin brass screws driven by a mighty midget motor. The old lake was demolished approx' 10 to 15 years ago and the new one constructed 30 yards further up. I was there as demolition was going on and the old lake was a large heap of concrete and rubble fenced off to the public. Do you know to this day I so so regret not squeezing through the fence and taking a hand size piece of the concrete side wall, the concrete wall I would have lent over 1000 times as a young boy of seven to launch my boats.

Hi Les, funny we've come full circle, I started my model sailing at newsham park back in the late 50s and was there at the beginning of "The
    liverpool
model POWER boat club back in 1964, when I was 14 years old. Notice the power was omitted from the clubs name approx' 15 years ago. In 1964 i had just completed my first aerokits sea scout complet with an ED seagull 1cc diesel, this club was where I met most of my mentors and founder members of the club, Jimmy Wilson, Cliff'Broadbent, Monty, Oscar Poulson etc etc all now sadly gone to that big lake in the sky where anything goes. I'm in southport now and do go back to newsham from time to time. Thank you for that bit of very interesting info'. The afore mentioned sea scout has just undergone a major re-fit after 55 years, the 1cc diesel has been replaced with a 3940 kv brushless and 60 esc running on 11.1 lipo, yes I know all to big for a little 24inch sea scout, but as the yanks would say " there ain't no substitute for C.C. Boy", you don't have to use it but nice to have. Martin you mentioned the old glue used in those days, the sea scout I made was glued using "caskomite" (can't remember the correct spelling) the boat is still 100% waterproof with no skin separation at all, I do not intend tarting the boat up at all, prefer to keep it the way a 14 year old boy (me) had made it apart from bringing the running gear up to 21st century and something that can be used at my local lakes. They replied that I could sail an IC boat and no I did not need third party insurance. If you ask the committee from the boat club that sail there they will tell you different, as that is what they want, but it is untrue. Why don't you email the city council yourself and ask and when you get a reply, you can print it out and take it with you to the lake so no one can tell that you can't sail.๐Ÿ‘

To answer NJP's question we can get a car within 30 feet of the temporary pond, less if you drive on the grass, the pool is about 12" deep. The pool has now been taken down for the winter but we have been asked to put a larger one up next year. There are toilets there although not 5 star, but these will be refurbished when there is cash available. The site is the Hooton Park Trust next to the old airfield. At the moment they are refurbishing the last hanger with a new Belfast truss roof. They do have a website and they are on facebook. You can also read about it if you type in RAF Hooton Park Airfield, which was opened in 1917 and closed in the 1950's I think. At one stage it was

When I brought it in, the prop was badly chewed up and there were scrape marks along the bottom of the hull. Guess it made contact with some submerged object that should have not been there. Hopefully technology would provide us with an answer one day; miniature sonar at an affordable price. Boaty

    Circassia model boat
Circassia- Glasgow Circassia was built in Glasgow in 1937 for Anchor lines
    liverpool
to Bombay regular route, carrying 285 passengers and 4000 tons of cargo. She was taken by the Admiralty at the beginning of World War 2 and used as a troop ship to North Africa. She never saw action but troops dubbed her the โ€œship from hellโ€ as accommodation was limited carrying far more than she was designed for. She returned to her 13000 mile round trip India run after the war, making her last voyage in January 1966, after which she was sold and broken up in Spain. This model was a 2 year project by a local retired yacht builder who is a real craftsman, built from original drawings to scale with great detail. Original drawings included with the sale. Includes 3 new rechargeable 6 volt batteries, charger, twin screw and bow thrusters, all servos and all works including navigation lights too. The transmitter is a Hitec Laser 4 with 3 spare channels if required (never used). The model dimensions are LOA 5ft 4inches, beam 9 inches and stands tall from keel to top mast at 21 inches. She weighs just over 60 lbs and sits on 2 teak plinths for display and has a rather crude but effective launching trolley and lifting straps. The plans say it is 1/8th scale. Contact details are Mike Billany, ** email and personal phone nos. removed Please use pm to share this info** I live in Hedon, approximately 7 miles east of Hull. Strongly suggest visit to view and buyer will need to collect. Asking price for all as above is ยฃ600 or very nearest sensible offer please.

    new brighton model boat lake
New Brighton (Wirral), Hoylake, West Kirby (Ashton Park) Gautby Road (Birkenhead) all on the Wirral Peninsula, and all within 30 mins of each other, are public lakes, anyone can sail on them, with the exception of ic and I believe only NB allows steam. Gautby road will allow ic, they have a club that races there on certain days. Out of courtesy, if the clubs are in attendance, its nuce to say hello. Ashton Park is an ornamental lake with wildlife, so sailing area is a bit restricted, and you can get a lot of public "tut tuts" if sailing in nesting season etc. This lake might have private permission, and tbh isn't worth the mither when the other lakes are so close. Gautby road is by far the best, however in an area that attracts a load of kids, and the odd "tinny" drinker. I go there with an eye to the surroundings, if you know what I mean, its got one way in, one way out, but is a fantastic lake with water that is right to the top. Hop through the Mersey tunnel, and you also have newshaw Park in

Hoylake is just close Dave, and you can park close, its usually quiet, so for testing etc its fine, just a bit small for the bigger scale boats. Bluebird K7
Hi Dave, The 1/12 Bluebird is brushless (all running gear from PMB), as it's made from balsa, I've waterproofed everything with sanding sealer inside & out. To be honest I was planning on taking it to quiet stretches of the Leeds/
    liverpool
canal as I didn't think any scale model boat clubs would want anything to do with my boat, but I will have a look at what clubs there are locally. The 1/4.2 will be IC powered, I want it to reach a scale speed of 300mph so if I can hit 75mph in the real world with it I'll be very happy. I hope if I can keep it light enough a couple of Tiger King S27 Evo's will get me there. I've emailed PMB as they don't have any stock at the moment, to see when they are due some in, but I've not received a reply yet. Plan is to buy 1 engine initially so I can plan the layout & while I'm carrying on with the build I was going to drop it into this eBay hull to see how it performs. I have a couple of Enya 40ss motors, I'm going to try one in the Short Stuff & see how it goes. I can't cope sitting at home watching the telly, I like to keep busy๐Ÿ˜Ž Cheers Wayne

Hi Dave, good to hear from you (sorry to hijack thread). 4 footer came out two years ago, Huntsman once in 2016, its over 3 years since the 3 footer got wet! Orca once in 2016. I did build the PCF which I really liked, but it went immediately as too many people messaged saying they wanted it, so it funded some RC plane gear, which I am really into now. I sold a load of bits and bobs at the Blackpool show a few months ago, didn't renew with St Helens in 2015, or 2016, and wont this year. However.... Robs excellent blog has got me interested again, and Stephen kindly did a bespoke 3 d printing project on something rc related, info and pics to follow when its finished! Back on track... George, I'm going to advise only things I have done, or used, I'm not one to say do this, or that, but actually I have not done it myself. No doubt others will disagree, but this is my opinion only. Best performance in terms of speed is brushless, and lipo. Forget fear of fire and explosions, this only happens with abuse, and they are the common use with rc planes, helicopters, cars, its only boats that are really stuck in the dark ages with technology that have this big fear of brushless systems and lipos! However, to get initially set up, they do take more understanding and initial cash outlay, as you need a specific charger for one, and you do need to understand what you are doing. Brushless motors will unlease the power far more than brushed, and are usually lighter. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-t600-brushless-outrunner-for-600-heli-880kv.html This motor is an example, there are much cheaper ones with similar specs, but I have used this motor in various applications, the most similar to your boat being my large Huntsman, with this motor on 6 cells lipo I achieved 25mph, but speed might not be what you want. So if you have the fast engine in your car, say a v12 Ferrari, if you run it on cheap fuel, it wont perform, same here, nicads and nimhs batteries are easy to maintain, you can drain them dead flat, but will give cheap fuel performance, like a bath tap trickling when the shower is on at the same time, and as they are dying technology, are expensive for what they are. Lipo is like turning up both bath taps and the force floods out, but now the tank will empty quicker, so you have less run time ๐Ÿ˜Š If brushless, its a specific speed controller, https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking-50a-boat-esc-4a-ubec.html and you pay extra for reversing (other rc disciplines don't need reverse) and a marine esc might need to be water cooled, however, decent brushed motor speed controllers are not exactly cheap, so now you know why budget is important to give advice, you could be spending ยฃ100 here just to get up and running. Look at my 4 foot fireboat build blog, as its twin screw (personally a boat this size is better twin screw) you can get by with cheaper motors, mine where ยฃ30 the pair, I use lipo for all my boats, so I have the batteries, and are familiar with using them, the speed controllers where about ยฃ40 the pair, and if I was buying batts then probably another ยฃ40, so it all adds up! Single screw, less batteries. You could power with nimhs, and it might be acceptable ,performance for you. If your location is Ellesmere Port, have a Sunday morning drive to Hoylake, then New Brighton, and maybe take in St Helens
    liverpool
, and Runcorn, see boats in action, see what sort of performance suits you, and rethink the budget, what do you want to spend? Then you need the transmitter and receiver (if you don't already have these) the fittings (see Robs build blog) a prop shaft, and a suitable propeller I am North Wirral, you are more than welcome to come and have a chat and see some boats, but unfortunately I'm deep into another rc project for the next few weeks, once that is done I can share some time, if you want! Don't worry, I'm not all about speed, I can do brushed motors and nimhs and get a result, Any questions, just ask, Paul PS... Looks like a nice clean boat you have there๐Ÿ˜‰

    DAMEN STAN 4207
Am building this model to replicate HMCC Vigilant. Up until now have found that this vessel and the hull of the standard Damen Stan 4207 production similar, so the Damen drawings have worked well. Moving to the superstructure this is not the case, whilst the two vessels are broadly similar, there are many differences. The photos available on the internet enable these to be identified, but the pictures kindly sent by
    liverpool
Maritime Museum proved enormously vaulable. These were so good that dimensions could be scaled off to help replicate details. The Canadian Hero class tends more towards the Damen standard, although have many pictures of this they confirm the drawing details. Started on the superstructure, using styrene as it is light and easy to work. The structure is now virtually complete, built from a combination of styrene sheet, strip and wood strip. Made the bridge and mast structure removable from the lower portion to assist any future repairs and to add interior detail. The mast was a particular challenge as it is quite complex. With the objective of reducing weight and thus heeling moment, made this from styrene tube. This material is easy to work, but an extra wire for the light grounds becomes necessary. Fitted a common ground using a bare wire with the various negative LED terminals soldered to it. The positive feeds are all individual and will need to connect beneath the bridge deck to install the correct LED & resistor combinations. All the wires were passed inside the mast legs. Hope to never replace a LED, that will be a real joy! So far, the weigh of the superstructure (less final wiring, glazing, paint and detail) is 14 oz. This should allow the model to be completed at around the 9lbs total, the target established from the earlier buoyancy tests.

    DAMEN STAN 4207
Some years ago I visited the
    liverpool
Maritime Museum and noticed a model of HM Coastguard cutter 'Vigilant'. This was an attractive static model, but one that seemed to have the potential to be made operable. After some research, determined the vessel was a derivative of the Dutch Damen Stan 4207 patrol boat. There are many pictures of this type of vessel in the liveries of several countries on the net. However, after numerous inquiries searching for plans or drawings, was advised they would not be available as long as this was a current production vessel. Thus decided to shelve the project and continue with building other models concluding with HMS Beagle, my previous blog. This was in the hope that eventually a lead on drawings would arise. Last winter our Club was invited to tour a Canadian Coastguard 'Hero' class vessel which is berthed locally. The tour reawakened my interest in a patrol boat model, particularly as the 'Hero' class is another Damen Stan 4207 derivative. My search for plans was initially unsuccessful, but a Dutch contact made inquiries directly with Damen and they kindly set him a set of sheer lines, sections and GA drawings. These contained enough information to develop a set of model plans.
