Hi Colin
Merry Christmas to you too.
I will get some pics of Malcs model interior in the near future and post details online.
I usually cover my hulls in fibre cloth and resin but tissue paper and sanding sealer will also seal the hull.
More to follow

Hi Colin
Welcome to the forum.
Are you a complete novice regarding RC? We will be able to help but it is useful if we know what level of detail you require. There is a section on this site All things RC which will help with the basics. I see you are located in Queensland, Australia so if any of your country men are reading they may be able to offer local help. if you have a local club that could be a starting point. Radio gear is used in all the modelling types so it doesn't need to be a model boat club.
I am attaching a picture of a friends Norcap so when you respond to this post I can get some detail pics of the details you require

- Can't Identify Brass Fitting
HI John
Yes models from this period do tend to have fittings possible considered basic by modern standards.
The pics are of a model belonging to Malc Vernon a fellow C&DMBC member and yes he has added a great deal of extra detail. I do have more pics so am attaching a couple for your info. Please ask if you need further help. One of the pics is the original model as first received

- Can't Identify Brass Fitting
HI folks,
I was given a very old
nordkap
kit with non laser cut timber and a separate box of expensive looking brass fittings. A friend Is building the kit for me and there's one brass part we can't Identify. It looks like It could be the mast head, but that seems to be made of wood In every photo I've ever seen. I've taken a photo and Included the lifeboat for size comparison. The drawing Is not to scale, but shows the rough shape. There's also a very small hole drilled In the tapered part.
Any clues? It's not mentioned anywhere In the drawings.

Thanks Dave,
It's odd that most of the models I've seen that use the brass fittings have a stumpy wooden topmast. Even yours looks like it's made of dowel. The kit is very old, maybe late 70's very early 80's and all the timber was brittle. My friend wanted to make a wooden topmast but I'll talk him into using the fitting.
Great model and great photo. There are many extras on your model that will inspire him.

HI John
I am not actually building a Nordcap. Martin requested pics of completed models and I was able to supply pics of some fellow club members completed models.
I usually build from plans either bought or own design and only copy for my own use to help with the construction and to preserve the original.

Martin, I also have scans of every wooden component. They are very high res (600dpi) and very large. All are designed to overlap and each has a ruler alongside for scaling purposes. I also planned to build a double size model, but the idea has been shelved. The scans were taken off a kit purchased in the 1980's if I recall. My friend who owned it never started the model and when he died earlier this year his family gave it to me. I've since passed it on to a fellow club member to build.
I respect copyright and have since removed the plan in my earlier post. I hope you or David got it before I did. I will however send you the scans if you need them, but I'm not prepared to make them available to everyone.

HI Martin
I've sent you the photos and see you have received them via dropbox. Hope they help.
I have spoken to Malc the owner of a Norcap and he advises the whole of the rear cabin and deck including the side supports lift off. I understand that he also extended the access slightly to the stern to give access to the rudder. There is a raised deck coaming around the access hole covered by the cabin.
Please ask if you need more details. π

HI Martin
There is another model of the Nordcap in our club and I have asked the owner to look how his upperworks are fixed. His was a restoration so he can't remember the details but will be looking later today and I will advise you later.
I have many more pics of this model but they are too large to share on this site. I am attaching a couple to this message. I use a Dropbox account to share files (it's free to register) and if you send me your email address I will send you the link to the dropbox account. You should send your email address via the private messaging service on this site so that your email is not broadcast to the whole world.

Hello Dave
Nice of you to reply so promtly, I would appreciate any referance pics which would be helpfull. I know it was a static model orignally.I am putting rc in mine like others have done. But not having the actuall build drawing makes it a bit hard to scale accuratly. if you google"
nordkap
476" they give you the frames and keel plus some super structure the rest is suck it and see if you know what I mean.I need to have access to the steering gear. Can you remember if the one your club had, the whole rear superstructure lifted off, because its fixed on the static one.

Model Boat plans wanted please, any scale!
Many thanks, plans have already been made to 1/32nd scale and hope to start building in the autumn.
Howe progress.
Since last post I have made many alterations to 'The Howe' most interesting is adapting small wrestling figures into fisherman, cook and cabin boy, by reshaping their bodies into the poses required, re-modelling with clay before coating with un-ibond and then painting. A steam generator plant has been made using a Graupner steam generator and feeding with baby oil through a home made 4 roller pump and soft silicone tube motorized with a 30RPM motor controlled by an aeroplane speed controller the rpm regulated through the transmitter, this means the trawler is fitted with twin speed controllers that each feed power to the receiver. This to date has not been a problem that some forecast.
Proportional 3 cylinder steam sound generator , fog horn and steam whistle sound have also been fitted. With 3 speakers, motors oil reservoir and the electronics along with the 2 x 7amp hour lead acid batteries and lead ballast there is little space left in the 4ft hull.
Mablethorpe Model Boat Group. This was started last year, 2012, and we now have 12 members and sail subject to weather on Queens Park Boating Lake meeting during the summer on a Wednesday evening around 6pm and mid-day on a Sunday. Members must have public liability insurance and must have received written permission from East Lindsey District Council before they can join us. Any one interested please contact me.

billings boat polar trawler
HI Dave its an old billings boat that came out over twenty years ago that I won on ebay last june, I believe they stopped making it some 10 years ago. if I remember correctly it is called the
nordkap
No 584. The ship has no modifications to it just had to replace a lot of the kit ply as it was delaminating and use the ply as templates on plasticard. She went out on water yesterday and performed really well, just a bit of tinkering here and there. regards steve

HI vaderswar
You have made a nice job in restoring this model. I am not familiar with this particular vessel, it seems similar to the Billings
nordkap
, is this a modification to match a particular ship?
Have you tried her on the water, as a polar trawler she should be in her element with a bit of Ice on the pond π
