How do I resolve my varnish problem?
A layer of the lightest glass cloth applied with
    ronseal
water based floor varnish / sealer.Rubbed down between coats. /Use enough coats to fill the weave / grain of the cloth . . this should still show the grain through the coats and leave a brilliant shine. this can be polished with T/cut once thoroughly hard if so desired.

    Priming the hull.
I used grey card for the caulking, I was lucky with some light coloured strip I was given, unfortunately no idea what it was, then I think I stained with clear satin or matt
    ronseal
varnish, the final effect was nice. The battery access, and the large central access in the rear well was just painted with aluminium paint, rivet detail on the towhook reinforcement and battery access panel was with dressmaker pins ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Boatshed I'm not Rob (!) but have you tried
    ronseal
2-pack wood filler. The reviews look good but you do need to ensure not to use too much catalyst. Edward

    Which Varnish?
Thank you. I have been looking at
    ronseal
but the only gloss I can find is for 'interior' use, bearing in mind my boat will be on the water.

Back on topic, the deck was done out of the boat, and just dropped in. fastener detail on the battery cover are just dressmaker pins. The wood is glued to the plasticard base using cyno, and the grey card for caulking is glued with bostick. Sanded down, then covered with a few coats of sanding sealer, then using a cloth

nearly got things out of order! The deck that the towhook goes on was planked, possibly painted also, Im going to plank, but not paint, just to use some modellers license and break the drab grey up, seeing as there is no bright red to liven things up ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ I did the same process as planking the Huntsman, and used grey card as caulking, the wood is glued on using alphitic wood glue, when all on sanded down, sealed with sanding sealer, then stained using a rag with
    ronseal
clear satin outdoor varnish. I used this as the finish is nice, not all glossy and looking like sticky toffee! ๐Ÿ˜ถ

my advice is dont glass inside, the wood needs to breathe, and let any moisture out, which it will get during use. I used a clear
    ronseal
matt varnish to make it look pretty! My esc's where pretty much the same, turnigy is same as hobbyking, its their brand. Didnt have a programming card, and it was REAL difficult to programme them, you need 3 hands ๐Ÿ˜€

    varnish
HI Alan, the best way I found to varnish the deck was the simple way. Rub down with 240wet and dry ,wash down with , white spirit, making sure that you leave no dust behind. Dilute then fist coat of varnish(Wilkinson based is quite good) with50% with white spirit and leave to dry(not more than 12hrs. This can be repeated as any number of times as you like to get a rubbing down rub down and apply more varnish until you get the desired effect with 400 grade, Rub down gently, wash off, and apply more varnish. This method can be applied up to using 2000 grade paper, but all that will do will be to waste an awful lot of paper and varnish. Six coats should be enough. Works well on offshore boats as well ONE point to remember, do NOT mix your varnishes, stick to poluruathane oil, or any oil based paIAINT do not use

Don't make the mistake I made, I spent hours planking a deck, then used sanding sealer to get a really nice finish, looked really good, then after a few months it crazed. If I did it again I think I would use

    Billings Boat
Hello again Dave. Thanks for your response, yes the woodwork is mahogany, thankfully there dos'nt seem to be any problems with the joints, not that I've come across yet, but then I'm too busy with the Billings Kadet which is needing almost a total stripdown to remidy rough painting by the builder. Why spend so much time building a kit and then ruin it with shoddy paintwork I'll never know. You may recall my previous post regarding adhesives, for the Kadet, to fix the wood deck to the styreen hull I chose to use "Gorilla" glue. It has a finished dry appearannce like foam filler, sticks like you know what to a blanket and is claimed to be 100% waterproof. The dry edges did require some filling with another adhesive though as the finished edge did appear to resemble a aero chocalate bar. Back to the boat in question where the cabin edges rest on the deck there is some light splintering. The product that I usually use in these circumstances is "
    ronseal
Wood Hardner" its a thin resin wood rot treatment that really soaks into the wood and does what it says on the tin! binding the fibers together. This will be the first time I will try it on mahogany though so I am hoping for the same results that I have had with lighter woods. Till the next time, Cheers John
