I have two s, an Alexandra and a Tug which was destined for the bin, until my friend suggested that he may know someone who wanted it. I refurbished the boat and the steam plant went to Clevedon Steam who stripped it, reset the burner etc and added a few new bits, glass water gauge etc. The rudder is controlled by an electric motor, NOT a servo, so you have to return the motor to central after a manouevre, so you have to think well ahead of where you are, and where you want to be!!

My Dear Gary, If you wish to start a Steamer thread then why not title it as such? In no way did I wish to be AntiSocial. I simply responded to your somewhat provocative question, which I quoted in my previous post, as did several others on the site in similar vein. Whilst I admire those who can build steam engines, and I have done that on this site, I simply listed in my response to your (perhaps rhetorical question?) the obstacles that most modellers are faced with when it comes to steam power in models. Perhaps I should have added number 7. - For most of us the SHIP is the main objective and not the power plant which in the vast majority of cases is hidden under deck. If steam is your THING - GREAT I have no problem with that. More power to your boiler 😊 It just won't work in my ships and boats. Esp. my subs 😉 And I don't have the patience for all the faffing about necessary to get going at the lake - one of my six points mentioned above. And I suspect that goes for many other contributors to this site. My post simply consolidated several similar responses from other members. You write; "I could correct all six points that you felt you had to share ..." I would be MOST interested to read your refuting of ALL my six points if you have some valid arguments. Throughout my professional engineering life I have always been open to alternative ideas and solutions. So prove me wrong and uncross my wires please. I look forward to your point by point refutation. BTW; as an experienced electronics engineer I always carefully double check my circuits before applying power - so crossed wires are not normally a problem with me. Complexity of the engine and difficulty of control. 4. Fire risk, and not just to the model.😲 5. Shorter run times, longer 'steam up' times. 6. Unsuitabilty for many types of ships / boats. I.e. originals weren't steamers. If I read above posts correctly I thought you had already found at least two kindred spirits here. I'm sure that if you take the time to cull throught the hundreds Build Blogs and technical Posts here you will find others. Try using the Search function. See the panel on the left of the Home page. I really can't believe that considering all the members that use this website, that no one is interested in steam engines and what steam has to offer. Why go to all that trouble of adding artificial engine sounds and smokers, when you can have it all and more, by installing a gas boiler and steam engine. When I think of the problems involved to find plans and scratch build a boat, why not go for the authentic look and fit a steam engine. in the fifty years or so I have been involved in this hobby I have NEVER ever installed an electric motor in a boat. if anyone out there in the ether shares my passion for steam, kindly get in touch, I would appreciate not being completely on my OWN.

RAM48 Sound Generator!

Captain's Log: Tug Brooklyn is a 1910 Steam Tug. So, Why not have it sound like a Steam Tugboat! I ordered the RAM48 Steam engine sound generator. All I have to do is install it! The RAM48 doesn't go connected to the motor. Like other RAM sound Generators! The RAM48 uses a Magnet that is glued to the shaft! Or in my case the universal coupler! I didn't think it was right to glue the magnet to the shaft. What if the shaft has to be taken out for maintenance! Anyway the RAM48 works with a magnet and sensor chip! To make the Chuff and Hiss sound! OK, after you let the magnet dry over night! You then have to carefully. Place the sensor chip about 1/8". Away from the magnet! Since Tug Brooklyn is made of Plastic. I can use a scrap piece of Plastic. To hold the sensor chip in place! Well, that's it for now. I'll update this post. As I work on setting up the sensor chip connection!

Paddle Tug Iona- paddle boxes & superstructure

Building the paddle boxes was remarkably easy, once the 1mm ply had been steamed for bending. I decided to build the boxes first and make sure the paddles fitted inside later, the idea being that all this would come apart for maintenance should it be necessary. (it usually is!). There are few models to be found on the internet to use as reference and hardly any images of the original tug. And to confuse matters, PS Iona also existed as a passenger ship, as well as tug, and looked a bit different. The superstructure is really simple and quick to build, with some more planking! Am liking planking small areas now. The funnels came from some scrap plastic tubing in the garage... just the right diameter too, a lucky find. These will screwed in place from below once I have the other funnel parts made. I plan to run the tug on batteries rather than steam, as I am a relative novice to model boat building. The whole deck will be fitted with 1mm ply as a base before... more planking! Before all this is glued in place, I thought it best to water test the ship first and see how much ballast I am likely to need.

The three figures on board are to a very high standard and dressed very much the same as the last video. it would seem besides bacon, Denmark is the place to find one's authentic boat crew.

Hello All Thinking out loud when I research steam engines it seams after they are built or after repair they are tested on an air compressor is it possible to set up a model RC boat to run a steam engine with air if so would it be by compressor or a compressed air bottle . If by compressor is there a small enough unit to go into a boat and be battery operated any ideas . Rick

My memory is kicking in, now. My first little steamer was a "Putt-Putt Boat," NOT a "Pop-Pop" boat. These had a little boiler over a candle or a heat tab that directed the steam out a little underwater pipe in the back of the boat. The boiler would make a "putt-putt" sound, which gave them there name. The one I have now is a tinplate reproduction toy. it is designed to run like the old ones did -- I just haven't done it yet. I have also seen a larger one of these in a 1940s book like "The Boy Mechanic," where copper tubing was used for the "boiler." The two ends of the tubing were directed aft at a shallow angle, just like stuffing boxes, and the middle of the tubing was would in a coil with three to four turns and supported so that a can of "canned heat," used for keeping chafing dishes hot, could be inserted under the coil to generate the steam. if I recall correctly, the two ends (steam pipes) have to be bent so they are both a little higher than the bottom of the coil to avoid having all the water drain out immediately. if I find that book I will post any drawings they have.

Good Morning, Gary: (It's Morning somewhere!) I have been interested in steam for a considerable time, and even have an article stashed away on making a turbine for a model of the SS Savannah, which is, after all, a steamship with a nuclear powered boiler. My own work has been limited (mostly by budget) to the Midwest Models single cylinder steam engine, and I have a "Fantail Launch" kit ready for some upgrades and installation of the steam engine. Stay with us, as I am sure, as already stated by others, that there are interested members of the forum, and you will pick up more when they see you are not just talking about a little pop-pop boat running in circles. (I do have one of those, as well. I had one when I was much younger, but it is little more than a memory these days.)

Rowen, here are a couple of things that may be of use to you (and others). The battery alarm will save you worrying about running out of steam as they can be set to beep at varying voltages to warn you of low battery, just put one on each batt balance lead and when one goes off (when an individual cell drops below the set voltage) it means start heading back. These can be picked up on Ebay for a few dollars. I use them on my planes as well and are audable from around 100m (these twin horns are the best) Secondly, re your ESC switches, these electronic switches (AliExpress) are great for this sort of thing (as long as you have enough aux switches on TX ) You can link them with a Y cable to work together or use them independantly for anything, (lights, pumps etc, - they can be operated by TX rotary switches as well) The ESC and 2000kv motor (HK) are the ones I am using in my ASR model and will work smoothly down to a crawl, the purple 1980 kv seems to have superseded these but I think they will be as good. The props are from Ali Express and are resin and available in L and R hand, are only a few bucks and perform perfectly while looking quite scale(ish). I painted them with an acrylic bronze which seems to have stayed on pretty well. Model weighs 2.8kg and will run at more than 10mph flat out with this set-up (using the 26mm L+R) props) which is silly speed and that's with 2x 2s 2200mah lipos (which will last till you get sick of it and still have 60% left) I was just looking at your Daman set-up and noticed the wiring method from the batts to the ESCs. You might want to make your batt to ESC connections direct to your ESCs (as per original ESC lead length)as your capacitors may get a thrashing (spikes) due to the extra length/ resistance you have there. There is a general rule that you don't lengthen the batt to ESC wiring without adding a 220mf capacitor of same voltage as the ESC for every 4"of extra wire length (ESC to motor - not so much). Might want to check this out in case you fry your ESCs You probably have thought of this but thought I'd mention it, 'just in case' Might help with your modulation as well. Have chucked in a vid of the HSL manouvering (first trials so wasn't perfect) and also the MTB (brushed) which I have just converted to a twin system (was twin but single Electronize unit) plus a sound unit. You may know that you can use as many RECs (bound to the same TX) for various purposes on the same boat (have run 2 boats together from the same TX) Might get you round the mixed brushless/ brushed problem with a bit of thought. Have you thought of changing your old HK silver 6DF TX to twin throttles, it's a piece of cake(as is the TGY 6x), just remove the aileron/rudder centering spring and make a friction plate as per throttle stick, and use the elevator channel as your other throttle. Set your ESCs and you can then use a twin system giving you perfect control. Saves a lot of hassle.

I bought an unfinished Graupner paddle steamer kit which was in a bit of a state and spent many happy hours making her look loved. The hull and paddle wheels were in an acceptable condition but the deck and superstructure left lots to be desired. The previous owner had purchased the motor which was 50.1 geared and pushes the boat along well all other bits including 'smoke' brass portholes and new superstructure added by myself. She was a delight to finish and looks an absolute dream on the water. (Motor: MFA 919D series) (8/10)

Old outboard motor...

GRP dinghy, ancient outboard separated into it's halves. The dinghy was made by a company that had done a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter which a friend was working on before he died suddenly. He decided that he wouldn't use the dinghy and gave it to me. I was thinking of using it for a mini steam plant as a river launch, but that's too far in the future. I think I may have a suitable dolly for the boatman. Martin

Gelyce class ''Islay''

Hi, many years ago I was approached by the man who ran the Chateau Margot delicious wine factory to make a model of Water Pipit, one of the smaller Gelyce class yacht tenders built by Camper and Nicholson. They di some at 50 foot and a few at 38 foot. Currently out there and nicely restored is Islay, which I think may be Water Pipet in a later itteration, since it was once restored and subsequently neglected by Ugo Baravalle, at the time Italy's 5th richest man and a gent who actually offered to show me round his vast collection on Elba very graciously. I never heard from the wine mazn again and so couldn't tap him for a deposit to finance the trip to Italy. Project cancelled, Baravalle apologised to, life went on. Now, I find I would rather like to do the model for myself, with all the lovely golden interior work. To do this, the construction would have to be more like the original steamed timbers and double diagonal planking, rather than my usual 3mm ply bulkheads. So, my question is...has anyone ever built a hull in this way, as a shell, more than a glorified Aerokits/Veron kit? I haven't, so I'm looking for any hints, tricks, warnings you may have. I am an engineer of 69 years young !! Studied engineering at Woolwich Poly from 1969 to 1973.obtaining CNAA degree second class......only my clever mate Geoff got a first !!Still, he doesnt know one end of a spanner from the other whereas i do ! Have been building s for years [with large gaps due to pressure of work ] and am interested in everything mechanical.I have so many projects on the go i cant possibly finish them all before i die ! My friend Gordon has made all the drawings for the frames from the original builders blue prints. The boiler he designed sort of based on the Cochran original and i made it, tig welding the copper bits {3mm } and tig welding the stainless smoke box.It took a year to make [ part time of course ] and Gordon steam tested it last weekend as you can see in the the photo [ we previously hydraulic tested it to 300lb ] . I will mig weld the frames to the keel and probably braze the stringers as i will only use 3mm square steel and welding may not be suitable. Plating the outside with copper will be a challenge !!! Gordon wants the plates to look lifelike so i need to punch imitation rivets along the edges. Might take another year or two !! Materials for the boiler came to £300 and the laser cutting frames £1000 for four sets so this project does not come cheap !! Will post pictures as the boat progresses. Les Breame

Envy Jane belongs to my granddaughter Evy Jane. It is sailed regularly at the Surrey park Dive, which is an old quarry in the city of Box Hill in Victoria Australia. We have a great facility and club house with approximately 130 members, we welcome new members and visitors and meet Sundays and Wednesdays.

Only the open deck boat for sale now, fitted with a Wilesco d46 boiler and twin cylinder engine. Servos for speed and rudder. This boat runs on gas from a small gas cylinder which gives around 15 to 20 mins running. Looking for £170 collection only. Some people have asked about a boiler test and I have looked into this as I will never understand why it needs one, 19psi, there is more pressure in a coke can. Anyway to get a test it needs a pressure test. Or just buy a new boiler off eBay for £55 pounds. This is collection only from Yeovil

Mornin' Maurice, No not yet. So far I've cleaned and primed the hull and bought new ESCs, 50 calibre MGs with mounts and ammo belts from Shapeways, scale crew members and Pacific cammo paints, Oh and the 37mm field gun for the foredeck. Then I got tangled up in a restoration and conversion from static to RC of an ancient Billing Boats Danish fish cutter. 😲 Right now I'm trying to figure out how to fit my renovated and converted Taycol Target motor plus battery and usual electronics into the small hull! Have been considering spraying some colour on the PTB hull the next few days, while it's still warm and dry outside😉 Then I can set about refitting the shafts and rudders. What are you up to? yes, and the more there is the more to go frustratingly wrong !! i keep promising myself to keep things simple but being an inventive sort of chap things inevitably get more complicated. My original Explorer s were the best.....simple boiler and oscillating steam engine. Ah.. lovely.

Martin you do have a way with words, I like it!, yes, and steam locomotives run on at least ten times the pressure of a steam driven boat. Happy memory's of the old New Brighton lake, my nan and mum would take me over from Liverpool on the ferry, which in those days went to New Brighton, with my pride and joy under my arm, my "victory models fire boat" remember the one? all plastic with twin brass screws driven by a mighty midget motor. The old lake was demolished approx' 10 to 15 years ago and the new one constructed 30 yards further up. I was there as demolition was going on and the old lake was a large heap of concrete and rubble fenced off to the public. Do you know to this day I so so regret not squeezing through the fence and taking a hand size piece of the concrete side wall, the concrete wall I would have lent over 1000 times as a young boy of seven to launch my boats.

Considering you can't run a pressurised boiler without a Vulcan steam certificate, there is no justification for banning steam, like New Brighton has. Mind you, when I saw what a silly little puddle they'd been left after the new developments on that town's seafront (hotel and retail) I wondered why they bothered turning up at all, but on 2 occasions I watched while I was staying there to visit a friend with my wife, there were two old boys with tugs and one of those had forgotten his batteries! Otherwise a Dad with a small boy and his off the shelf speedboat and even that was scowled at by the old farts. if a boat has a Mamod type of boiler it's not even considered a pressure vessel as its capacity is too low as is its "pressure", so you're covered all round. No need to ban anything as usual. Many parks have live steam railways and if they went bang they'd get their windows blown out in the town hall! Martin

Our "Imara" Tug has a cheddar steam plant, I might swap it for the motor and batteries it currently has. I can remember as a small child at a pool called the apex pool by Brean Sands. when a large power boat with a big KMB engine run up the bank out of the pool. The carpark was a gentle sloap straight into the water the boat passed me a 40 MPH on the tarmac. The prop I found, and had a small momento to remember the boat by. I actually still have the prop 35 years later and ran it on my power boat for a bit. Good times. (sorry for nicking the prop i was only 10!!) Stephen

I remember going to a model boat club meet in Crosby Liverpool back in the early 60's ( cannot remember the name of the lake though) There were plenty of IC models plus one guy who had a steam powered trawler and he was busy stoking the thing with pine chips to get steam up. As I remember a beautiful boat. Maybe the way forward is steam????

Gunwhale rubbing strakes

Gunwhale rubbing strakes As these pieces will be under stress they need to be steamed into shape prior to fitting so out with the wallpaper stripper and modified tube (1/4 BSP fitting in the bottom of an old piece of IKEA cloths rail).For the gunwhale strakes I used the same former as I used for the stringers so 20 mins in the steamer then into the jig for 2 days drying. The chine rubbing strakes will need a different jig but this time a left and right hand version as not only do they bend round but also up at the bow. I was however disappointed with the quality of the 3/16 square obeche as the grain was nearly at 45 degrees to its length – it snapped before I started to bend it, just pushing it into the jig I bought some better pieces from the local model shop. I temporally fitted the gunwhale rubbing strake slightly proud of the deck level in order to drill all the pin holes then remove and mix up some epoxy, coat the length and hook into the brass bow and start tapping in the pins along the length of the boat, repeat on the port side. Chine rubbing strakes are still in the jig!

Vanity, Victorian Cutter

Thanks, I used to make top end model furniture for the Home Miniaturists. it's my way of finding a connection with my cabinet maker Granddad, who was a big model boat fan too, in fact he was a founder member of the Victoria Model Steamboat Club. She is 48x9x11 plus bowsprit. Height of rig is about 4 feet also. And yes the fitting on the keel is a piece of ally box section cut in half so it becomes U section, drilled through at equal spacing for the fin keel. Then the U section is screwed with brass screws and Marineflex sealer/adhesive to the keel, which is all solid hardwood. I did my sums and gave up, so once she was waterproof I put her in my son's fish pond and kept piling stuff in until she floated on her marks. Rigging won't be that heavy, but I made an allowance for it. Once it was floating right it turned out to need 14 1/2lbs. of ballast. BUT, that's inside. On the end of a 15" inch(ish) fin it will be less. I have 2 half bulbs cast by my other son in his back garden from my patterns. They will be bolted to the fin and faired in. Cheers, Martin

A really well attended show over 3 days there were lots of stalls selling mostly tooling type products but a good few boat related parts as well. There were lots of steam related stalls serving the model traction engine and steam train community, however the show of boat clubs was very disappointing (only 3) anybody know why? Still I had a great day and spent loads of money.

Following up on previous questions: There are no restrictions on using IC or steam just don't collide with any of the regulars! The big problem here is the wind, last Sunday was glorious but the water was very choppy and even the big tugs shipped some water (try getting a boat back against the wind when the rudder has failed). Couple of photos to show the conditions. We have alternative boating available in Turriff (but the pond gets filled with weed in summer and ice in winter) and at Portsoy (Loch Soy). One of our stalwarts took his fishing vessel to Banff Harbour last Saturday to play with the rowing skiffs - mad, yes he is!

I sold an EXPLORER kit to my mate Bob and look how he painted it !!!! He intends to call it HUMBUG .....and i wonder why !!! I think he is fitting a WW1 gun to the front of it soon. Fairmile D 1/24 Scale Build

Hi Andy I am interested to read about your plans for a dog boat as I am thinking of doing the same (when my Thames steam launch is eventually finished....!). One reason that I am considering this is that my headmaster, when I was at Maidenhead Grammar School in the 1960's, was a former skipper of MGB 658 and I am lucky enough have autographed copies of two of his books. "Motor Gunboat 658" is a fascinating read if you haven't already come across it, as is "Dog Boats at War" with plenty of useful information and photographs - just two of the books by Len Reynolds DSC. (He rose from Navigating Officer to Captain during the war in the Mediterranean theatre and served on MGB 658 from its commissioning in 1943 to the war's end.) Apologies by the way if you already know all this! Two questions if you don't mind - are you going to do a complete scratchbuild from plans or complete a fibreglass hull, and which/whose plans are you using? This may help my own decisions later on. I have seen that there are plenty of the appropriate weapons in 1/24th scale on the Deans website which should make life easier with the fiddly bits! Very best wishes with the build. Smiffy
