Hull finishing touches
Stuart - as you can see from the article in Model Boats, Colin has fitted a contrasting timber to the perimeter of the hull and up the centre of the bow and then infilled with planking.
Another method is to veneer the deck and just varnish it or drawn lines on it with Biro or pencil before varnishing.
SLEC do laser etched ply but the planks are straight.
Really it depends on how accurate you want the result to be and how much time you want to spend on it.
With my Huntsman 28 build I'm just using birch ply and varnishing it whilst with my larger
swordsman
33 (but same scale) I'm going the whole hog and planking it.

Basic hull construction completed
Hi Stuart - I'm scratch building a
swordsman
, albeit larger than your Huntsman as I'm building at 1:12, so 33" long. I haven't worked on it for a few weeks but am at a similar stage with the hull in that I'm just about to sand the concave into the bow to form the flare. This is a stressful part and I might delay it and start on the superstructure!
From the photos it's difficult to tell if you have overdone it or not due to the different materials breaking up the lines. it looks OK head on and from the side but when looking down towards the keel it does look a little excessve.
I'm going to be building a Huntsman 31 as well soon but again at 1:12 so will be from plans, either existing or my own. I've got three Fairey builds on the go at the moment and another on the drawing board, well PC.

Bought this some years ago with a holed hull and no cabin. Made only those repairs needed to make it useable, fitted new 2.4Ghz radio gear and batteries, and have been using it ever since. I keep threatening to restore it properly but it's fun as it is and a rebuild is probably more realistic anyway. (5/10)

Yes, copyright is a real hornet's nest.
I remember reading an article in Building magazine many years ago on the subject of copyright where one large housebuilder tried to take another to court because it had copied one of its designs. But because the defendant had slightly altered the design it got away with it.
So for example if I put my
swordsman
drawings on Ebay, which were based on the kit drawings, I shouldn't have any problem as I have made a number of alterations. I won't be of course as I've only drawn enough for me to build my model, they are not full working drawings and I'm not interested in doing that.
Where that guy on Ebay is at fault is that he is blatantly copying the original kit drawings with Aerokits on them rather than redrawing them - not that he has the wherewithal!

Sorry a bit off the original topic but here's a picture of my

I made quite a few modifications to the drawings because I wanted the aft cockpit version at a scale of 1:12 and added a spine and "fingers" to help with construction.

Don - Unfortunately I didn't see your post until after you had ordered, so too late to warn you and I may have been wrong as regards those particular plans. Unfortunately I wasn't.
Jacko - I see what you mean but drawn and printed are all one sentence so I read it as both were to a high standard and that is what you would reasonably expect. Even if the draughtsmanship wasn't the best (and I can draw to a very high standard on the drawing board and PC) they should at least be accurate, which they are anything but. The guy's just a chancer.
Modelboatdevil - the plans I got were for the
swordsman
. There are some original Philip Connelly plans for the
swordsman
on Ebay at the moment, though they are somewhat yellowed and creased! I've never seen an example of the Aerokits

H.M.S BRAVE BORDERER
A little anecdote to add to this build is that I was used to seeing both
swordsman
and Boarderer in both Portsmouth and Portland whilst I was in the RN. (1960 "s}
In fact we gave one of them a "lee" ie. got to windward of her in foul weather and helped her into Portland. She had some sort of mechanical problems.
The stories one of them was moored on the smaller, walled wharf that they used away from the big one we on HMS Aurora used.
As I said it was another rough night, most were in Portland . A yachtsman had crept during the night and tied up behind HMS Boarderer.( restricted area)
Capt. told number one to go get the yachtsman to move his boat. Time was about 0400. Very tired yachty told no.1 to F off.
No. 1 came back onboard and relaid to the skipper who went down reraised the yachty and got the same message!
Skipper came back onboard and contacted the engine room and as it happened got a 'wet" start on the turbines.
The loosely stowed sails on the yacht melted rather well!!
Moral to the tale, Never tell a sailor to F off!!
Bye the way both these boats had a top speed in good conditions , of in excess of 80 knots and in theory could circumnavigate uk in 12 hours. I remember that the always ran very flat on the water at planing speed.
Regards, Nick.

Bugger, thassa rum 'un, Doug! I thought Pusser's is what was issued to the Navy! That's always been the implication. So which rum WAS issued to the men in blue and white?
Whilst I do like Pusser's and have a miniature ship's decanter with some in, I also very much like a Wood's with a splash of peppermint cordial, which lengthens the drink (I'm a tight sod), but doesn't change it's essential flavour, or texture.

Too Powerful Brushless ?
Graham - don't tell me you ran the boat at anything like full throttle. if so, it wouldn't just be the prop shaft that you'd have to worry about! if you did it must have been virtually uncontrollable!
I take it you bought the boat with the motor already in it? Whatever, it couldn't really have been a worse choice! With such a high kv and being an inrunner (if I've got the right motor) it's really meant for a lighter, race type boat running on 2S to keep the revs down to a reasonable level.
As you now know, for your type of boat you need a kv around 1000 or even a bit less as torque is what you need and also go for an outrunner. 3S or 4S is fine and if it is too fast limit the amount of throttle.
Without seeing photos it's impossible to say if your existing prop shaft is up to the job but as you've removed it anyway and if you don't mind the expense I'd change it for one of the Raboesch maintenance free ones. I'm using these for my builds and my Fairey
swordsman
at 33 inches is a similar size and weight. These are rated for 10k. and 15k. rpm, I've gone for the latter and in 5mm shaft size to be on the safe side.
I doubt that a shorter prop shaft will be feasible as usually the motor is already pretty low in the boat and a shorter shaft will increase the angle and you don't want it too steep. Also you would have to redrill the hole for the different angle. What dia. is the existing prop shaft?
The other thing you need to consider is the prop. What are you running at the moment?
A photo of the boat would be good.

Hello
I bought an old
swordsman
from a friend recently and have started to refurbish it This will be my first foray into refurbishing wood models so I think I will learn a lot!
It was a gas-powered boat but this will change to electric.
So far, I have sanded the paint back to the wood and have filled the bow section damage.
I have found an area around the hole for the prop shaft that has delaminated and come away from the keel.
My plan is I am going to use Zap ultra-thin penetrating CA to re laminate the ply sheet. then use cascamite glue to reseal all the joints around the hull.
Would this be a good way to repair this damage or is there a better way?
I will keep this thread up dated with new photos and progress reports over the coming weeks.

i think it looks good and have uploaded three photos (sorry about the quality) the first shows the boat at rest (it had blown a fuseπ) the bow is slightly down, the second photo is the boat at full speed i think this is ok, the third is at about half throttle the boat seems flatter than at full speed. i remember a post earlier in this thread regarding putting the batteries further forward they are currently in the back.
I think it is ok but do you think it is worth experimenting.

Fairey Huntsman &

I dont uses mixes, but do use exponential and rates (spektrum dx6i) with my twin screw brushless 4 foot fireboat. When at speed rates on, then it turns nicer, no roll, when going slow rates off so turns are sharper, if that makes sense.
Mixing the throttles.. interesting not thought of that, but it will lose power/speed. We use mixing on planes for taxiing, particularly on water, but once airborne its off. My avatar has this as the cheapo motors just wont balance so it compensates for this on the water. With the boat its easier to control with rudder input. I like the thinking though!π

Hi Doug,
Hate to split hairs, but am researching a Brave Borderer for my next project. in doing so can advise that although the BB and the Brave
swordsman
were sister ships, they had different superstructures. Have no idea why.
The Perkasa was different again, it resembles the BB but it has an enclosed wheel house in front of what looks like a BB superstructure. This extended portion can be seen on the pictures.
Sorry, as R.A.F in Canada, to disagree with you!
Enjoyed the rest of your post though, it helped explain some of the export derivatives of the Brave class which I could not otherwise pin down.

Not quite RH! But similar heritage.
Brave
swordsman
P1012 was one of two Brave class, the other being Brave Borderer P1011 (see photo taken on the Rhine river). Both were built between 1958 - 1960.
The Danes ordered 6 (SΓΈlΓΈven-class) to a similar design, 4 being built under license in Denmark. Replaced ca 1990 by the 'Flying Fish' class.
The Royal Malaysian Navy ordered 4 boats in 1964 which became the Perkasa class, ca 6 years after the Braves. Class ship being KD Perkasa P150.
The other 3 were KD Handalan P151, KD Gempita P152, KD Pendekar P153. They were delivered in 1967 some 7 years after the Braves were delivered.
The Perkasa design was based on the SΓΈlΓΈven-class which itself was based on the Brave class. So the model (to my mind) is Brave
swordsman
.
With 3 Perseus gas turbines the Braves were at the time the fastest naval ships in the world at 52 knots. The SΓΈlΓΈvens and Perkasas used the same set up.
Cheers Doug π
PS The Braves could be equipped as MTB or MGB with two 40mm. Borderer in the pic seems to be in that configuration.

Hi Andy, I have 'twined both the 34" and the 48" Huntsman, i used 600 size motors in the 34, and 850 motors in the 48. Both were very quick, but, the run time was poor, about 10 mins.
With modern lipo's or big Nimh batteries they would be a lot longer especially if you used brushless motors. Props, on the 34, they were 35mm x 3 blade brass, on the 48, they were 45mm x 3 blade brass. Sad but i sold them some years ago but now have a 48" fireboat to play with.

Hi Richard its in the thread titled motor problem, its not a big feature, but I think you are going to be tail heavy. The misconception is, sometimes people say, oh its planning, so must be fast, but in actual fact its not going fast at all, its actually the balancer, or more importantly the centre of gravity being off, making the bow rise. A good starting point will be with all deck clutter etc, and all fittings etc how does it sit in the waterπ

I personally feel your batts will be better in the centre section, similar discussion going on with another thread regarding balance, that stern weigh will cause the bow to raise prematurely, no doubt testing will provide the correct answer

Hi Glyn - I'm going on Friday as well to get the last of the materials I need for my

I've recently got around (at last!) to making space in a spare bedroom and have set up a worktop. I was going to buy a Proxxon scroll saw but it was the more expensive DS 460 one at over Β£300, but decided in the end that for the amount of use it's going to get and relatively thin timber/plywood to be cut that a cheaper one would do.
After some research and reviews on YouTube etc. I decided on the Record 16V for Β£125 which I ordered from Machine Mart. Got the call today to say it's in so will pick up tomorrow.
