The Motor I am putting in this Sea Queen is a Torpedo 850. This is due to the Caldercraft motor only manages just above walking pace.

Aerokits/Jotika Sea Queen
Hi
This is being built from the Jotika Sea Queen Kit.
The kit is quite comprehensive but I need to check the fittings supplied as some of the look a bit small for a 1:12 Boat. Also decided to change the Motor from the existing Caldercraft to an MFA Torpedo 850 as I believe the Caldercraft Motor only manages walking pace.
First thing was to built a building board. I need this to also cope with a VMW 46" RAF Crash Tender.

PS: You may be risking overloading the Viper Marine 10 with the Torpedo 850!π² See attached spec. Note: "It has a 10Amp motor limit ..."
I think you would be better off with the Marine 15 considering the T850 max continuous at 13 A. I only use my Viper 10s for small (almost Plastic Magic) boats and motors.
Just a thought, it's up to you but don't be surprised if it smokes at full throttle π‘ Cheers Doug π

Hi, just noticed your Harbour Post wherein you write
"Direct Drive to a MFA Torpedo 850 (2 Blade X Type) Powered by LiPoly (11.1v) 8Amp/h Batteries Controlled Through Viper MARINE (10Amps) ESC"
Don't forget to fit a 10 or 15Amp fuse between ESC and motor! Stall current is 40A !!!
See pic for Torpedo 850 specs.
Oh! And don't forget to take a 'supervising adult' with you on each sailingπ Have fun, Doug π

Fittings and finishing
Have been making steady progress on the Huntsman.
Few additional fitting I acquired and me mom has been busy knitting boat fenders front and for the sides.
Amazing she can almost knit one as faster than I can chamfer a cork in the lathe to fill it with. (pictures attached).
I'm not sure the masking tape she attached them will cope with the speed and the wet. I guess I need to secure then with some brass cleats or posts. My next Job.
Also attached the windscreen not as much trouble as I thought.
Radio is in and the
torpedo 850 motor
installed.

At long last I got there.
These say they are For 540 dual motor or single motor
So for an 850 torpedo it is a no go..
I think I will have to stick with these from http://electronize.net/model_electronics_frames.htm

Hi camyaj
I have used similar and they do work well and I agree they can handle high currents.
I do have one reservation as the web link show Tamiya connectors to the battery and I believe these are rated at 15 amp when new. The Tamiya site has a discussion on connectors https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?/topic/56075-tamiya-connectors/
I replaced my connectors with Deans and have had no problems.

They are a reasonable cost.
I have seen a few so overpriced There not for the average modeler.

I do believe the link is to ESCs similar to those Mark (jarvo) referred.
I have a box here with about six that have been pulled from club member's models. They all appear to work (in a fashion) but exhibit a range of problems in the model from erratic running, stopping to smoking.
Personally I would not use with any motor drawing more than 10 amps. Most of mine were used in fast models with big motors and seem to have lost the designed control spread resulting in little control from stop to full.
It could be there was a bad batch and Mark, I and my fellow club members all bought from the same sources as we all live in the NW. The very max volt is 12 so it could be a fully charged SLA caused the problem

But I will make something soon...

Hi Sonar, if you are running 2 motors, make sure you have good capacity in hand, these are powerful motors and need a good ESC to handle them, i used one with a chinese "50amp" esc and it produced magic smoke within a few minutes, changed to an Electronize and its run for 2 years now

I was told any brushed esc over 25amps by the guy from SH Grainger. Well, that's what he sold me to pair with the 850's he sold me at the international Model Boat Show at Warwick last year. I decided to go brushless after that, so, motors and esc's are sat in a box in the garage, so I don't have any practical knowledge, sorry. Just what I was told. Best wishes, Dave W

Precedent Huntsman 461/2 Inch
HI Folk,
As I have started painting boat I thought that maybe this would be a good time to get my head around fitting all the R/C and motor parts and where to fit them.
The parts are 1 MFA
torpedo 850 motor
, 1 Futaba S3003, marine brushed ESC-50, 1 rudder, push rods, and 1 very heavy L/A Battery. This is my first entry to R/C so I need to know how each part relates to the others. Obviously common sense tells me about some procedure like position of rudder and motor as they are shown on the plans. The rest I am unsure about.

MFA Spearfish
This was a very beat up and plain model when I bought it , but has cleaned up well . Original Power was from a Torpedo 850 and heavy 12v 7Ah lead acid battery giving run times of around 20 minutes of plod along performance . Now however Boat is powered by Thumper motor and 4 cell Lipo's giving over an hour of entertainment . Cut's a fairly mean wake too . Needham lake in Suffolk is it's home surf π

(Pleasure Craft) MFA Spearfish
Originally fitted with Torpedo 850 and on lead acid battery this boat handled like a lead brick , which was a waste of such a lovely hull , now it can motor along nicely and turns quickly and very stable . Plus run times are very good . Just needs lights fitting (Motor: Thumper ) (ESC: Turnigy) (9/10)

Fairey Huntsman 31
I built and fitted the top structure and drilled through for the propshaft and rudder. Fitted the prop sleeve and spray painted the hull and structure (see pic), I did it in maroon and white coz I couldn't paint it blue being a Man U fan, although my rugby team, Barrow Raiders, (and that's an oxymoron after last season!) do play in blue! Next I sprayed the window frames aluminium and fitted them with the plastic panes using Formula '560' Canopy glue which dries clear, along with the hatches and air vents. I also fitted all the RC Equip, motor, prop & shaft, servo etc. after giving the interior 2 coats of z-poxy finishing resin to waterproof it. I'm using a 12v lead battery, 50mm prop and MFA Torpedo 850 Marine Electric Motor. I tried it in the bath for trim and it sits just grand!

Help needed to convert Kiel Kraft fire tender to electric
HI all,
I am trying to finish a K Kraft scale 3/4 to 1'0" 46ft Vosper crash tender for my wife's dead father. We want her mum to see It running but I know very little about out boats.
I have a
torpedo 850 motor
and need batteries and a speed controller. My local model shop sold me a 12v battery that's a black brick and will just fit but boy It weighs a ton. Sure this can not be right.
Please can someone advise me and offer help on best battery, speed controller and rough place to put battery for balance.
To say I am out of my depth Is a understatement but have finished the boat and detailed It and boy does look great !
Many thanks

fin stabilisers
When I say that I intend to use becker rudders I mean that I want to use them for the fin stabilisers as well as the standard vessel rudders.
I have included a photo of said items on full size vessel so as to give a clearer picture of my intentions.
The vessel in question is the German Coastguard and Fisheries Protection vessel Seeadler.
My model has a total length of 1644mm and width of 310mm (scale 1:43).
It will be powered by a pair or
torpedo 850 motor
s and 2.1:1 reduction drives throuth 60mm 4blade props.

14 Volt ''Torpedo 850''
I am working on putting an MFA Torpedo 850 In a "Dumas" Chris Craft triple cockpit 40", but for weight distribution It would be easier to run off two 7.2 NiCads, for 14.4 volts.
The motor spec says "12 volts".........will It take 14.4, or am I looking at a meltdown situation?
Any Ideas much appreciated.

14 Volt ''Torpedo 850''
HI Brian
Look at http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/datenblaetter/200000-224999/222377-an-01-en-E_Motor_Torpedo_850.pdf. This gives some specs for the 850. π
The Important bit is the max advisable amps at max (recommended) voltage. in this case 13 amps x 12 volts = 156 watts. This is the motor rating and if overloded it will heat up to destruction. π
So if you wish to use on 14.4 volts the max current you can allow is 156/14 = 11.1 amps.
To achieve this you will have to choose a suitable prop that loads the motor to less than this maximum, or you can fit a reduction unit to the motor to allow for a larger prop.
There are Wattmeter units available to help you check your setup, perhaps someone at Chasewater has one and can help you. π
The stall current is 40amps so you will need a suitable ESC and fuse to protect your model.
Good luck with you efforts.

My fire boat build
HI guys,
Just thought I would post some pictures of my own designed fire boat which I have been building from scratch for the last few months. It Is 42" In length, entirely built from wood and Is powered by a single
torpedo 850 motor
, It Is very lightweight so she has plenty of speed to her.
It Is nearing the final result now and tommorow I will be putting In the window glazing, and adding all Its fire and rescue signage and decals.
I have got some flashing blue led lights for this model which I will be putting In within the next few days and I have ordered a couple of fire monitors and various other fittings.
Hope you like It so far! π
