Just converted this 40yr old twin brushless model (scratch built from a

Edward,
Yes - thinking out problems is half the fun๐
My first build was a
vic smeed
Starlet - just completed. Pretty straight forward but I over engineered it to try out some ideas - thinking the ideas through was great fun.
So although I will not start the Cariad until January I'm trying to explore problems now. The angle of the rudder shaft is one that I think I have a solution to. Take it right through the deck then put a handle onto it, hinged at the shaft so that it does not rise and fall as it is turned. Then a Bowden cable from each side of the cockpit to power the steering. I will enjoy building a mock up and trying it out!
As to the rudder, I am thinking of a detachable extension - downwards.
I'm also thinking about placing the prop to one side - perhaps more authentic but also well clear of the rudder.
One thing that I'm still thinking through is the access hatch. I see some builders move the dingy to the centre and create a hatch here but I like the clean decking on the original, with the dingy to the side. A hatch to the side would work for everything but the top screw for the detachable keel. Some more time dreaming up a solution.
Thanks

One issue of interest is the keel weight which seems a little too heavy so the boat lies a little too low in the water. Has anyone made modifications to the keel? What is the best way to do this and how do you maintain good fore and aft trim?

You really need to be self reliant on these simpler tasks, rather than use a local "expert". There is no such thing as an expert on drilling keels! And if he suggests he is...avoid him!

You don't need an expert. Just go for it carefully yourself. Lead is easy to drill.Re internal ballast I would remove at least part of the deck to looksee.๐

Thanks for the advice. I have changed to a smaller battery and moved it fwrd (it is R/C). I have also tried to see if there is any internal ballast but that's not easy without removing the deck.
I think its time to drill the lead keel as suggested. I have found a local expert who says he will do the job! Will report on progress.
Many thanks.

As Westie said don't use a Forstner it will take out too much at once. Use the 8 mm evenly both sides. Go gently.๐๐ Also see if any ballast has been added inside. This was often done to reduce heeling . it defeated it's own object as reducing the freeboard still put the lee rail under when heeling. Also what batteries are you using? A change to lighter ones may help. Lipos maybe but they may reduce duration.Nimhs may be a compromise. Or the ABC types All this assuming you are using R/c.

I think a Forstner cutter would be a bit vicious for lead and a bit big. Use say an 8mm drill and use a drill with a decent speed control. Start the holes by hand to ensure they go where you want. I would say start by drilling in the aft part of the keel as the boat appears to be arse down a bit. if there's any internal ballast , move it forrard.
Cheers,
Martin

Many thanks for your helpful reply. The line between the wooden hull and the lead part of the keel is very clear so knowing where to drill will not be a problem. Do you think a fostner drill bit in a hand drill (slow speed) will be best for drilling lead. its something I've not done before so any advice would be much appreciated.
I will put some more pictures up hopefully tomorrow.

More photos would help in particular the keel.
Can you identify which parts of the keel are lead? if you can then you could just drill holes into it (as close to rear as possible) to reduce its weight. Keep drilling and doing buoyancy tests until you are happy then leave it to dry out before filling the holes with car body filler.

Many years ago I built

's Flipper hydroplane from a Model Maker free plan. I fitted a Mabbuchi outboard motor. This didn't use bevel gears, but had a flexible "spring" drive shaft. Eventually it stopped working and on dissection I discovered that the spring had rusted through. I tried to replace it with a piece of Mamod drive belt, but it was never the same.....

Speranza is a lovely boat and handles nicely but don't undepower it. Vic's Pond Skater is a good flyer and can be converted to leccy and rc. I put a half circle of piano wire across the tips of the front float as a buffer in case of striking an obstacle. My motive power Was 1.5 diesel a prop cut down from a heavy nylon 9" one so just clears the hull/frame . Free running was loads of fun. Air rudder not water. if it is sluggish and won't plane increase the downthrust. The opposite of what you might expect. Regards John Pond Skater can be found on Web Google

I have built a few of Vics plans and found them very easy to construct. He does build them a bit heavy an underpowered but.....they are solid and safe.......Starlet, Hydro bat, Scudder And currently got the Zing Ray under construction.
The Starlet is a dream to sail.
Hydro bat very fast and very responsive to water rudder input. A favourite with the grand kids.
Scudder looks quite weird but it lives up to its name. Grandkids love this as well.
Another water rudder model.
If these are used in really weedy lakes the rudder will pick up some trailers so i have fitted a 3mm rod running from mid keel to lower rudder pivot point. The weeds simply slide off.
The Zing Ray is a shovelnose hydroplane still under construction.
The biggest source of quite a bit of discussion is the conversion from ic to electric. Using a base of 3.5cc produces 400w or about 1000grams of thrust, these models seem to work ok.

Motor Mounts
My latest project is the completion of 'Pilot II', built from plans by
vic smeed
. (Not sure of the vintage but the plans cost five shillings). (Picture 1)
If I mount the motors using conventional u/v couplings I cannot secure them without making holes in the hull. (Picture 2)
The only remedy I can see is to extend the coupling, therefore giving me enough gap between the hull and the mounts to secure them without damaging the hull. This would mean extending the couplings by approx 37mm (Pic 3).
I am unable to use what appear to be the already built mounts as I cannot get the motors to that angle.
I have never extended motor mounts so any advice would be welcome.

Scudder
Hi
I have refurbished this 'Scudder' hydroplane designed by
vic smeed
in the 50/60,s. I think it looks a bit like a marine Douglas Dakota!
In place of a an OS MAX 3 15 glow diesel, I fitted a A2212/13T, 1000KV brushless motor and propeller and an HW H30A controller.
It goes well but will not quite plane.
It current uses a NiCad 7.2v.
I have adjusted the angle of the prop/motor to push the nose up a bit, but will the motor/controller set up take a higher voltage so it will have more power?
Hi Gents
Update on the Scudder...I fitted an 11v Lipo, and relaunched. Loads of power; the hydro immediately went onto the plane and ran very fast....then the trouble started!
The roof flew off, passed through the prop, and was chopped up...this in turn damaged the prop blades and possibly through vibration, the motor mount then broke up!
Maldon never had so much entertainment!

Tarpon Build 01
Hello Jon, Not exactly, This cutting tool is not my idea, it originates from 1960's circa Model Boats , I thought originally it was from the book Power Model Boats by
vic smeed
, but i cannot see it at the mo. The drill/reamer, it stems from the Aerokits era when all the keel's of their kits were precut for the propshaft, done for alignment purposes.
So the idea was borrowed for the Tarpon Keel .. But when you come to fit the prop shaft, one has to open up the shaft entry point to the hull, and /or plus drill through a Bulkhead, First step is to ensure the shaft tube, your now modified drill can slide in the keel gap, then gently and slowly drill through into the keel doublers and if necessary on into a bulkhead, if some sort of pilot is required, i have slipped a piece of dowel into the drill bit and this has sufficed. Remembering it was all done with a hand drill or Brace, but modern techo has taken over so we now use a battery operated pistol drill, at a very slow speed. its the external keel that is mainly the drill guide in this instance. Hope this helps..
Regards muddy.
