    Maxton modified wooden ornament
A modified wooden ornament by Hannah. All superstructure stripped off and fitted with all electrics prop, rudder etc. Now a little river barge. Handles well light to carry and good in water.
    Royal Daffodil ex OVERCHURCH
After a complete refurb the Overchurch was renamed the Royal Daffodil. My model depicted here is scratch built on fiberglass hull to 1/48 scale. She now rests in my workshop next to the original Daffodil circa 1918 after she gained the "Royal" status for her role in the raid on Zebruggee in WW1 1918 together with her sister ship the Iris. The current Royal Daffodil rests in Vittoria Dock Birkenhead laid up and will not again see any service again.
HMS DAFFODIL 1918 later to become Royal Daffodil
HMS Daffodil fitted with armour for WW1 raid on Zeebrugge in 1918. Scratch built on fiberglass hull. No plans, just from old photos. The Mersey Ferry requisitioned by Admiralty and later to become Royal Daffodil in recognition of her actions at the Zeebrugge raid.
    (Other) EGREMONT
Just Completed another Egremont Mersey Ferry in different colours this time. Not yet decided on power, electrics, etc just for show at the moment. Will probably sell it and let the new owner put in his own electrics. (5/10)
    (Working Vessel) Egremont
Scratch built on fibreglass hull superstructure plasticard; Decks 1/8th light-ply. Most of fittings scratch built. (Motor: Mitsubushi) (ESC: Chinese imported fan type) (9/10)
(Working Vessel) Edmund Gardner Liverpool Pilot Boat
See build blog for full details. Required a lot of ballast and is a fairly heavy beast. Davits for life boats and jolly boats are complicated and made from cast white metal so give a lot of upper deck weight. The whole of the deck rear of cabin and bridge remove as one piece giving good access to interior. (Motor: 540 ) (ESC: Ebay for under ten pounds 320 A with fan.) (8/10)
    (Other) Sirius
Scratch built entirely from wood. Plank on frame hull. Very basic plan from the London Science Museum and photos of a model in the Liverpool Maritime museum. Sirius was first steam powered vessel to cross the Atlantic under steam power for the whole voyage in 1847. (Motor: Wurlitzer) (ESC: Viper) (10/10)
    (Working Vessel) Hinderton Mersey Ferry
Scratch built on a fibreglass hull. The Mersey Ferries of this era (1930's) were all built on similar hulls so the fibreglas hull mould serves many different Mersey ferries. This was a series of five. Claughton Hinderton Thurstaston Bidston and Upton although the Upton was slightly smaller. Lite ply and plasticard are used extensively on this model. (Motor: 500's) (ESC: Viper) (9/10)
(Working Vessel) EMPRESS QUEEN I.O.M. PADDLE STEAMER
SCRATCH BUILT USING A MODIFIED FIBREGLASS HULL FROM THE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS FROM GLASGOW UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES. THE MODEL WAS NEARLY 7 FEET LONG WITH AN OVERALL BEAM OF 14 INCHES. (Motor: WURLITZER) (ESC: METRONICS VIPERS) (10/10)
    (Working Vessel) Royal Iris
This boat was like Marmite you either hated it or loved; it known as the "fish and chip boat". I personally didn't like it but was asked to make one for somebody. Not easy to make due to the complicated shape of the hull and superstructure. I will probably post the build blog sometime. (Motor: 540's) (ESC: Hong Kong blueee) (8/10)
    (Yacht) Sheila
Sails well in very gusty and strong wind. I only need to steer it as the sails are set before the launch. Although I don't do yachts, its good to have a change sailing her. (Motor: WIND POWER) (ESC: NONE just a servo on the rudder) (8/10)
(Working Vessel) Claughton Paddle Steamer Mersey Ferry
The Claughton was a Mersey Ferry from late 1800 and Queen Victoria had a journey on her. She was a double ended paddle steamer ferry. She is total scratch built, no plans just from drawings and photos and reference to museum models. The model was very heavy and carted about on a motorized golf trolley; which she is on in the photo. The model had a 12" beam, but handled quite well as both paddles were independent drive, using two Wurlitzer juke box carousel motors which had an integral gearbox giving a rotation of approx. 100 rpm. (Motor: Wurlitzer carousel ) (ESC: vipers) (9/10)
    (Working Vessel) Mersey Ferry Rose
Scratch built from photos and sketches. This is the sister ship to the Lily which I also built both are the same era and same specification. Only difference was the midship side screen was cream on the Rose and white on the Lily. Originals were built 1900 and operated on River Mersey for many years. Model is approx. 1/48 scale and built on fibreglass hull. Superstructure light ply. (ESC: vipers) (8/10)
(Working Vessel) IOM Steam Packet Snaefell
Scratch built on a commercial hull from Scale Hobbies in Skelmersdale. Home made "masters" for fittings; duplicates moulded in white metal by Steve from Scale Hobbies. Model took about 4 months to build and uses plasticard for the upper superstructure. Working bow rudder, smoke unit, home made sound unit for triple steam horn. Working anchor. Deck lights and nav lights all functional. (Motor: johnston) (ESC: viper) (9/10)
    (Pleasure Craft) Rebecca
Scratch built on a commercial hull, no plans just built from various photos of various boats. Fully furnished interior with chart table pencil and ruler on table. Home made sails, and most of the fitting hand made. Very stable and reliable model. Named after my grand-daughter. (Motor: Mitsubishi) (ESC: home made) (9/10)
(Working Vessel) Bruernish but now renamed Raasay
A Caledonian MacBrayne originally a car ferry, but now used for hazardous cargo I.e. petrol tankers and other goods required on Mull. The model has a working ramp and the petrol tanker is scratch built and also operates being able to drive on and off the ferry. Bruernish was scrapped, so I have altered the name to sister ship no 7 in series which is now Raasay and still in use at Oban. (Motor: Johnston) (ESC: Viper) (8/10)
    (Life Boat) Douglas Currie
A model of the Solent Lifeboat Douglas Currie to 1/12 scale. Fully operational siren, radar scanner, windscreen wipers lights etc. scratch built wooden hull and wooden superstructure. Hull coated with fiberglass gel to make waterproof. Most of the fittings are also handmade. Stanchions and hand rails all handmade. (Motor: Ford Cortina Fan Motors) (ESC: Home made) (8/10)
    (Pleasure Craft) Wacker Quaker II
This is a scratch built model from photos of the real thing that used to run in the Liverpool Dock areas and a tour round the city until they were withdrawn in 2013. The model is made from 1/8 and 1/16 ply and differential drives from wrecked model cars. The wheels are also recovered from kids model cars. The model operates on water and on land using two different drive systems and motors. A 4 channel 2.4 Ghz radio is used. One joystick operating rudder and prop the other joystick operating the steering and 6 wheel drive to road wheels. This is the second DUKW I have built, the first one was a bit smaller and has now been sold. (Motor: Electric ) (ESC: Vipers) (7/10)
    (Working Vessel) Mersey Ferry Lily
Scratch built from photos and sketches. Original was built 1900 and operated on River Mersey for many years. Model is approx. 1/48 scale and built on fibreglass hull. Superstructure light ply. (Motor: 2x 340's) (ESC: viper metronics) (8/10)
    (Other) Snowdrop
Scratch built from G/A plans of original and loads of photos of the real thing. Fibreglass home built hull, with extensive use of plasticard on superstructure.72 leds Illuminate the fully furnished interiors. 100 passengers and 4 crew on board. Completed in February 2014. (Motor: Mitsubushi) (ESC: Metronics Viper) (8/10)

    Hi! Doug
no the esc is not home brew, it was from ebay.
"RC ESC 20A Brush Motor Speed Controller w/ Brake for RC Car Boat Tank" for Β£3.37 works well and as far as the interference suppression with capacitors; no I don't find any need for them now I'm on 2.4ghz. All my models work from the one 6 channel transmitter, and none of them have any suppressors on, although they are all brushed motors. Never had any problems.
I don't do submarines so have no need for 40Mhz or 27 Mhz.
I like to keep things simple!

    πŸ“ Leaking boat

    LEAKING BOAT

So your plank on frame boat has sprung a leak and you can't see where the leak is. You can suspect that due to age, small cracks have appeared in the planking. The external hull paint work too may be cracked and damaged.

Remedy:- Make sure the hull and wood is thoroughly dried out. Then clear as much of the internal electrics away and make a mix of fibreglass resin; pour the resin, whilst warm into the interior of the hull and tilt the hull every way you can to make the resin find all the interior nooks and crannies. You have to be quick with this, as the resin soon starts to set and won't run. Allow the resin to set and test in your bath or test tank. I have had a 98% success rate with this.

You can try a second application if it is still leaking.

    MOTORS

Having chosen your motor, the motor / running gear alignment is very important. In every case the motor to prop shaft or shafts MUST line up perfectly.

Good alignment will mean less load on the motor therefore less current drain and enabling higher speeds. Bad alignment could damage the motor or the speed control putting excessive load on either. The motor and shaft should be in a straight line down through the coupling and prop shaft to the propeller. Use a longer prop shaft and a solid sleeve to check that shafts meet parallel and dead centre. A novice can do a good job if he takes the time to get it right. Always cover with masking tape the motor's vent holes to prevent dust and dirt getting inside the motor when you are working inside the boat, don't forget to remove it before operating the boat.

    2.4Ghz TX/Radio combo

With the introduction of the 2.4 Ghz Radios the 27Mhz and the 40Mhz systems will soon become obsolete, they are however the only ones suitable for underwater submarine use as the 2.4Ghz will not transmit under water.

With the 2.4Ghz system you can forget about wrong crystals; or is somebody on your frequency; dual conversion; incompatibility of some crystals on some radios; interference etc etc. need I go on. The first 2.4Ghz systems were expensive but now a transmitter and radio can be bought for just under Β£30 there seems to be no point in hanging on to your old 27 and 40 Mhz Radios.... START to update for a hassle free life. Additional receivers are only Β£10.

It seems that the Planet and RadioLink are no longer readily available. FlySky are a suitable in-expensive alternative but are not compatible with Planet or RadioLink.

A simple, one off binding process for your first time use and your set is tuned to just your transmitter. You can use just one transmitter and have all your boats fitted with receivers which will only receive signals from your one transmitter. Should you for any reason want to add or change your transmitter for the same type you can simple re- bind your receivers again to match your new transmitter SIMPLE !!!!

If you do have a rather expensive 40Mhz Transmitter it is possible to purchase an adaption kit to 2.4Ghz and still retain your transmitter, 2.4Ghz 4 to 6 channel receivers can be purchased for as little as Β£10 to match the modified transmitter.

Just Completed another Egremont Mersey Ferry in different colours this time. Not yet decided on power, electrics, etc just for show at the moment. Will probably sell it and let the new owner put in his own electrics. (5/10)

    πŸ“ Counter Rotating Props

CONTRA AND COUNTER rotating Props . Actually both are correct.
Probably counter rotating is more correct for ships.
We could argue for days!! Anyway they both go in different directions. One clock wise when the other is anticlockwise, but make sure they have left and right hand props, not the same type or you will be in trouble.

They are CONTRA not COUNTER rotating and on LIFEBOATS they turn inwards on other vessels they generally turn outwards when the vessel is in the forward direction.

Spot on with calculations Allen 0.636% donations and only 1.1% last year. its very sad that we think so little of supporting a great site. So glad you have made us all aware of our shortcomings.

From my reckoning there were only 44 people contributed to the website funding in 2016 with over 3775 members I think this is very disappointing, come on guys if you like the site then make a donation, surely you think its worth Β£5 for the year. I for one would be sorry to see the site go.
