    Dutch sailing barge
The rigging is made from fishing line. Itโ€™s sold as trace wire, used for sea and pike fishing, 50lb. Itโ€™s supplied with small tube crimps and I then used a piece of heat shrink to cover these.

How do you create the coiled ropes?
Chug... that sub chaser looks great. One little detail is the flag should have a 48 star flag. Thanks for sharing the photos. Lew

    Question of the Day?
I virtually stopped using another similar forum as the alerted contents was so often "I agree" with no real offering or constructive information. Even things like "I got it wrong again" on QoD score 2 points. It is a bit like being the Captain's "yes man" and gaining promotion. I like ranks as a bit of fun but as in life sometimes your boss can be a corporate idiot! Seen it twice at work where talk outshone common sense. In one case a salesman did well in the company his briefings were greeted with all eyes on him. Management thought this was good presentation technique and he was promoted. The reality was he had a very large wig and we were all wondering if the next time he turned round his wig would stay facing us! As with many members I have done a lot of other things not as an expert but in so doing picked up useful knowledge. There are some very good threads running and I am still learning so please keep this up, for me the rest gets deleted. e.g. I was not aware how much the keel on a fast boat affected the performance. But I do now! Roy

    Early Radio Control Experiences
When we got married and moved to Exmouth in 1971, I was expecting my Aerokits Swordsman, and my pair of Vic Smeed powerboats (Remora and Suzie Q) to get a lot of use in this coastal town. Imagine my surprise when nobody in the immediate area was interested in model boats at that time, but very much into model aircraft ! After many trips to Woodbury Common to chat with the r/c modellers who were flying their aircraft, any doubts about missing some local water that was in regular use for model boats was dispelled - there was none, and nobody locally ventured into the sea with a model boat either! After some time, I eventually built a Keil Kraft Super 60 to learn to fly with on Woodbury Common and needed a 4 channel radio to go with it. At that time the local model shop (Exmouth Models) was just around the corner from where we were living, a very well stocked little shop with an enthusiastic owner but they were not allowed to stock Futaba radio due being close (!) to Exeter where a model shop already stocked the brand! (that wouldn't happen these days!). The owner needed to be able to sell radio control so he decided to give the new Japanese SANWA brand a go as it looked smart and had good write-ups. So my first 4 channel radio with proportional control was a SANWA, and it looked very smart and well made. I was delighted with it as it was the poshest looking radio I had ever seen or owned at that time. Sadly, I cannot find any pictures of this radio to share here, but it was all silver and chrome and felt really good in the hand and had a very powerful output! Most of the local flyers had also chosen to support the local model shop and also used SANWA r/c, but anyone that didn't was not too keen to stand close to anyone that did! Anyone who was not using SANWA radio was likely to get "swamped" if they stood too close to anyone that was using SANWA radio, but this turned out to be a problem with the other older radio sets and not a problem with the SANWA radios. As time went on and the new model shop in Exmouth continued to flourish they began to stock and sell other brands alongside SANWA radios and they didn't seem to be affected by any "swamping", so the problem was eventually considered to only affect some of the older radios that were being used. The 35meg radios that were used for flying model aircraft at that time needed to use their own matching brand of crystals, and experimenting with fitting alternative brands did not always end too well (!), so everyone used crystals that were made by the manufacturer of the radio type they has chosen to use. The introduction of 2.4 gig radio control systems really did make the use of radio control systems so much easier and comparatively trouble free. Bob.

    No motor coupling
Hi Doug, I collect old electric motors mainly those intended for model use. I have 7 biscuit tins full but the odd part is I have to search for ages to find a motor for a new boat. I like restoring older model boats and also like fitting a contemporary motor to them. I bought a Mary Ann fishing boat with a 540 motor fitted. I can't imagine how fast she went. I did a refit and put in a Monoperm motor. I attended a Garage sale about 20+ years ago and looked around and not much took my eye. Then someone I hardly knew called out my name and said we have been saving the electric motors for you He brought out a box of motors, about half the size of a banana box, I asked how much for the lot? He said can I manage ยฃ40? yes I could! I sold a couple which paid for the buy. I still have a lot left which I use in my boats. I sometimes feel guilty about the purchase but then forgive myself by using the motors as they were intended. Roy
