Don't know if it shows clearly but I've pretty much decided how to build the stern so that it will take the TFL outboard. Once it arrives I will make any changes required. The design is basically the usual well for an outboard but I've had to split it with a central raised part to which the motor will be bolted. Because the motor isn't very high and has to be mounted low there is another little well the width of the mounting which is even lower and below the chines. It will probably get covered in water at a standstill and slow speeds but that won't be a problem. What I'm going to do is build the stern first and separately so that I can iron out any problems and if I have to rebuild it that's no problem. It can then be fitted to the remainder of the hull. I'm sticking with building off a flat deck but have now decided to go back to a fixed superstructure which means I've got to alter the frames again!

    prop and motor advice
Hi Northernflotsam, if you decide to fit a brushless motor, I would suggest fitting an out-runner motor in your displacement hull fishing boat. An in-runner motor would not develop as much torque and turning a large diameter propeller around the 50-60mm size that you suggest would suite an out-runner motor better. I have run a 50 mm propeller on my restored Rapier using an inexpensive Surpass 1100KV out-runner and it performs really well at low speeds as well as when being driven quickly. The motor works with a fairly high amps ESC because that is all that I had spare at the time, but with the water cooled SHARK ESC range now being available at such low prices, I would suggest going for the 80A or 100A size for around ยฃ30 or less. With that size of ESC you would have plenty of capacity to run the large propellers with little or no fear of either the motor or the ESC overheating. From my experience I have found that ESC do not usually get hot when running at high speed, but when they are restricting the power flow to run more slowly they are actually working harder with more chance of getting โ€œwarmโ€. A larger capacity ESC has more ability to handle any over-loads that one that is only just able to cope with the loads being imposed upon it, and a water cooled ESC is even better IMHO. Bob.

    Converting floor models?
Very interesting work, Mike. I'm curious to follow your progress and see how you finish it. I hope you'll post lots of photos and excellent descriptions of each step, as you usually do, so your work will be useful and informative for everyone.
