    TVR1A Steam Engine.
I have finally managed to make a little progress on the building front, of what eventually will be an open steam launch. If anyone out there in the ether is struggling with the problem of fitting the forward and reverse servo. This set up works really well, mind it did take a little while to perfect, using a standard size servo wrapped in a full metal jacket of aluminium. As per the photos, which also show the 6mm steel chain, as the prop-shaft and crank-shaft are on different levels.

Hard to say what the reason was for his material choice. Maybe just the materials he had available to him at work. I believe from the quality of the D10 he built along with the boiler that he was a good machinist. But maybe just not a "model engineer".

And Now For Something Completely Different
Chieftain Mark 3. My Chieftain is a HAYA model that was bought as an RTR, but this only means that it would drive when it was delivered. The paint was incorrect and incomplete and it needed to be airbrushed in the correct colours dependent on the time period and theatre to be replicated. The main gun barrel needed to have some lagging added to look "right" and I have used thin cable ties to replicate the individual straps (after I lagged it) until I have time to make some more authentic ones with cast clamps etc - but they give the right effect - especially when the tank is being driven and not being given a close-up inspection. The tracks are metal with authentic rubber pads inset in them as used to protect the tarmac roads that the regular metal tracks would churn-up! I also have a set of authentic moulded tracks that actually run better and when weathered they really look good. Lots of extra individual detail can be added to replicate any individual tank and convert it to any particular mark, so although it would be possible just to buy and run one of these (sadly not currently available) most owners that I know who have bought these expensive models have been serious enough to do a lot of extra work on them, so no two are likely to be exactly the same as each other. I also have another Chieftain that I have not shown here yet that I have converted and painted to replicate a Mk5 variant in the BATUS colour scheme, and I have an appliquรฉ armour set to convert my first Chieftain to a Mk 10 at some time in the future. 1/16 scale r/c Model tanks are seldom ever "finished" but always remain a "work in progress" that need constant maintenance and rebuilds to keep them "battle worthy" but (like a lot of model boats) - many remain box standard and are kept at home and are not allowed to actually get wet and dirty! My tanks are all driven and run as often as possible (like my Classic Model Power Boats) and are most definitely NOT shelf queens.....so they will never be pristine or look like they just left the factory. Bob.

    No motor coupling
Having read all of the posted answers to this some what strange proposal it does beg the question why. Stick to the the tried and proven method and use some sort of a coupling. My personal proffered method is to use an uncoupled coupling as per the photos. Or in some cases where prop shaft and engine are on different levels a steel chain and sprockets. Regards, Gary.

Hi Ed, Yes, I used to use round blades in my fretsaw and coping saw frames quite a bit and being able to cut in any direction is very handy. I think they used to be called Abrafiles ? The blades that I am using in my Hegnar fret saw are very thin and have very fine teeth that cut like a hot knife through butter (but a lot slower!), and even when cutting with these blades the plywood surface can chip lumps off of the top surface layer of the laminate. I don't think round fret saw blades would help to stop the "surface chipping" on the plywood that I am currently using, I think the wood is poor quality and badly laminated and that is the problem rather than the way it is being cut, but I will see if any are made to fit the Hegnar as they are such a useful blade to have. Bob.

Hi Ed, I used to use one of those digital angle gauges quite a lot before I sold my milling machine. They are very simple to use and work very well....but small enough to loose in an untidy workshop(shed) ๐Ÿคฃ Bob.

    Early Radio Control Experiences
That looks really nice Roy - I have not seen one of those before - and your bearing repair will keep it running for some time to come. I have not been able to find any 1/16" Paxolin anywhere online yet - the thinnest listed is 3mm, (which would be OK) but that is mostly out of stock everywhere too. The search is far from over, but my initial findings are that it is not going to be quite as easy to buy some Paxolin as I had hoped it would be. I have also checked under the brand name Tufnol but again, the thin sizes are proving a little illusive. When I was a young lad Paxolin was very cheap and plentiful and was used for circuit boards (and even flat plate engine mounts for control line aircraft) etc. Now it is getting harder to find and is more expensive! Bob.

Help Please Graupner 2351 Navy Sound Module
Guten Morgen Bruce, Found the manual (in German) on RC Groups site. First off- Lead #2 is labelled 'Blitzerausgang' = Flasher output. Seems to be intended for a flashing light, i.e. police or emergency service boat. Probably a mini light bulb back then as LEDs were still exotica and expensive. It has nothing to do with RPM variation of the diesel sound. So not needed unless you want to go flashing๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™ˆ Unfortunately there is absolutely no reference to Lead 2 in the manual!๐Ÿค” "Should the sound of the RPM speed up when you advance the throttle?" Yes๐Ÿ˜‰ The module takes it's input for this directly from the terminals of the motor, i.e. voltage being applied via the ESC. So you need a mating connector for lead 3 wired to the motor - brushed only I suspect. Polarity is not important - logical since the motor can run both forward and backward.๐Ÿ˜‰ "adjustment switches" these are actually adjustment potentiometers, variable resistors (known as pots). Diesel Drehzahl (RPM) - is used to set the diesel sound RPM to your taste when the motor is running full chat on a bench test. Diesel Lautstarke (volume) - is used to set the max volume of the diesel sound. Gesamt-lautstarke (total volume) - is used to set the total output volume , i.e. when all available sounds (diesel, horn, ship's bell, wave slap๐Ÿค”) are in use. NOTE: there are warnings about setting this too high as it risks damage to loudspeaker and/or the module amplifier. More about that later. For now; you need a minimum 4Watt loudspeaker. Have looked at the module specs ... but more tomorrow as it's now 2am here and I'm starting to nod off๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ’ค Cheers, Doug๐Ÿ˜Ž https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/thumbgallery.php?t=1771514&do=threadgallery&type=img&group=none&starter=no

Laughing Whale Friendship Sloop Scale 1:12
Chug!!!!!! What a gorgeous Cat Boat! That's what we call "museum scale" around here. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My dad's boat was built from a long discontinued large scale Midwest kit. It is about 40" long. The current Midwest smack kit is about 15" long and can be had through Amazon or Micro-Mark I think. I also have a wonderful old book, "Friendship Sloops" by Roger Duncan. International Marine Publishing Company 1985. It's a must have for the Sloop/Smack fan. ๐Ÿ‘ https://www.amazon.com/Friendship-Sloops-Roger-Duncan/dp/0877421722/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VDVOG0NCD7Z3&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.t54USs6MvLjsmznrPCkDAQ4Ig2c_quxaNXWp9gl09SI.ROnWiMFVVYird58EDtoHfNAPhJMH9q8JT8FY0zhIXUo&dib_tag=se&keywords=Friendship+Sloops+by+Roger+Duncan&qid=1763853027&sprefix=friendship+sloops+by+roger+duncan%2Caps%2C165&sr=8-1

Modello RC scala 1/60, di piroscafo armato a goletta, liberamente ispirato alle cannoniere classe US
Jumpugly, I'm glad to hear you have Italian roots (as does Ed). How wonderful! Have you ever visited Naples or Monreale (and therefore Palermo?) They're beautiful cities full of art. Naples and Palermo need no introduction, but Monreale will amaze you if you've never been there; its cathedral is of great historical and artistic importance.

    Converting floor models?
Hello everyone, I actually wanted to report on the work yesterday, but the painter is busy in our basement. First the walls, then the entire floor. During the last renovation, when geothermal probes and a solar system were installed on the roof and a new elevator was installed, certain rooms were needed as storage space for materials. The short version of my report: I can't get into my little workshop... and it will stay that way until the end of the week! What that means for a hobbyist like me is obvious! But now to the freighter... The biggest problem is the deck metal construction and re-drilling the hole for the drive shaft. I think I'll use a movable shaft here. I'm still totally unsure how I'm going to split the deck, as there is a full frame installed every 8 cm (3.15 inches). ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ Does anyone have a better idea? Tips are very welcome! I'll let you know when I can go back downstairs! Yours, Michel-C. PS: Attached two picture of me in a relaxed pose.

LF - just seen your comment! ๐Ÿ˜† Unfortunately not, as it's quite big and not central. On one of my other builds I do have a small defect in the deck planking and I am going to put a deck fitting there.

    Motor Mounts
I generally 3D design and print my own motor mounts, servo mounts and most everything that goes inside the hull. The photos are my Graupner "Dusseldorf" fireboat under complete rebuild (if I can get back to it). Even if you buy motor mounts you still need to fasten them to something. This method (3D work) is easier for me. Temporarily hold the motor(s) in place, take measurements, then make the mounts. Lew
