Hi. The HK controller is an
    aquastar
120Amp water cooled which has suffered all of the burn outs and never failed. SKU: 9052000008. The failed motors were all 2848SL 3900kv Brushless inrunner (WaterCooled) SKU:3900-2848SL. I have my doubts about the specifications as their watts and amps do not add up. I have a temperature sensor on the motor sending info back to the TX and usually after a full charge and a fast run it would get to 60ยฐC, then I would cool it to 45ยฐC before the next run it burnt out at 85ยฐC when I wasn't paying attention. The new motor runs at about 45ยฐC how ever hard it is pushed. Still using the 120A ESC. The new motor was in the HK sale and I don't think they do it now SKU:S2858-2630. it just happend that the water jacket for the failed unit fits it.

    Battery problems
BIG MISTAKE I brought a 5300mha -50c-14.8v-4s1p-78wh LiPo battery yesterday. Bloke in hobby shop checked my ESC which is a TURNIGY
    aquastar
Watercooled ESC 160A. and said that it could handle that size battery. Giving the boat a test run this morning the ESC erupted in a huge cloud of black smoke. Not happy Jan will be ringing the hobby shop in the morning. Allan

    brushless motor
Hi, I use the same motor on both my 46" Fireboat and on my slightly bigger Perkasa. it is the Turnigy
    aquastar
4084-620KV, run with two 5000mAh 4 cell (14.8V) LiPo batteries in parallel, and this gives both boats a brilliant and potentially slightly overscale speed and a long run time. Go to http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__31678__Turnigy_
    aquastar
_4084_620KV_Water_Cooled_Brushless_Motor.html to see it. Both boats are single motor, single shaft, 3 blade propeller, the Fireboat has 50mm prop and the Perkasa 55mm. This motor will produce 3kW in short bursts but is relatively lightly loaded in these boats so it has power capacity to spare. The kV value is just the rpm per volt applied to the motor so a 620KV motor runs proportionally slower than say a 1600kv motor which is probably too fast for this sort of boat, and it means you can run a bigger prop. For the speed control I use see my boats on this site.

    Anyone understand this?
I have just been out running my Perkasa happily blasting up and down the lake at full throttle for about half an hour until the battery cells went low and the ESC cut the power. As I was advised and since proved if left for a minute the battery comes back up again and I can usually tootle back to the side. I waited and sure enough got some headway but probably rushed it a little and the cells went low again and it stopped before I got it to the bank. I then found it wouldnt move after waiting and I had to wait for it to drift to the side. Upon investigating I found that the two 30 amp fuses in parrallel had blown. I cant understand how the fuses are ok blasting up and down but blow in a low voltage and low throttle setting. I replaced the fuses and everything works as it should. The only thing that occurs to me is if the ESC actually sinks power to prevent movement but that seems unlikely. The ESC is a 160 amp

Interesting. I'm guessing you are using LiPo batteries and as you are aware they should not be discharged below the manufacturer's minimum voltage. Some of my higher powered LiPos suggest a 3.5v cut off but you set the actual value in your ESC. A little math shows that the power (watts) of your motor is the product of the voltage applied and the current flowing so for a 120 watt motor at 12v the amps are 10. if the voltage drops to 6v the amps could then be 20. Haverlock has identified this as a likeley scenario and I would agree. Ideally your ESC should exhibit decreased performance before switching off the power transistors to protect your batteries, this then allowing you to run at minimal speed back to shore. The 120 amp
    aquastar
may offer advance protection but you would need to read the manual. All my ESCs stay dead if the battery drops below the set cut off and will not rearm until the battery is disconnected. I appreciate that you were advised that the ESC would rework after a minute but this is putting you, your model and your LiPos at risk. Unlike other battery technologies, LiPos chemical structure can change if the voltage parameters are exceeded. Once changed the position is irreversible and you will lose capacity and in the worst case there could be an explosion and fire. Dave

    Advice please on replacement brushless.
Can antone offer advice on this please? Having burned out my speed controller when my boat picked up a polythene bread wrapper, I am busy trying to get It going again. The motor Is a brushless EnerG C50-20 and the burned out controller was a maytech 80 amp. It ran very nicely and the 30 amp In line fuse lived happily without blowing. (Until I picked up the bread wrapper) I have just bought a 160 amp
    aquastar
speed controller from Hobbyking. The motor will run but Is blowing the 30 amp fuse and sounds rough I Increased the fuse to 80 amp which Is what the motor Is rated at. The motor runs rougher In one direction than the other. The speed Isnt settled and the motor hunts around. Also more worryingly If I give the motor full throttle It starts smoking so It wont last long like that. I fear that the motor may already be damaged by the Initial mishap Can anyone tell me If there are any Issues using a speed controller with a large capacity compared to the motor? I would like to understand If what I have set up should run. Should any speed controller run any motor provided the loading Isnt exceeded? I suspect that the motor Is Kaput but I have a nagging worry that the new speed controller could have an Issue. Expensive lark this Isnt It?

    Advice please on replacement brushless.
Thankyou both for your quick replies It looks like another motor then. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ The ESC settings on the
    aquastar
160 amp esc are Default Settings: - Battery Type > Auto Detect - Operation Mode > Forward with pause then Reverse - Acceleration > Medium - Forward Limit > 100% - Reverse Limit > 50% - Drive Frequency > 16KHz - Rotation Reverse > Normal What is the drive frequency? I have the choice of 16KHz or 8 KHz Its amazing how difficult it seems to be to get useful information. There were no instructions at all with the ESC or the programming box. Just a set of specs on each.

    Brushless Speed Controllers
Purchased two Turnigy D3542/5 1250 kv motors and hoped to pair them with a 90 or 120 amp Turnigy
    aquastar
speed controller. Unfortunately these do not appear to support a reverse function and haven't been available for weeks. I would appreciate any advice from anyone with any experience of the HobbyKing branded alternatives such as the HobbyKing 90A Boat ESC 4A SBEC and also any experience of ordering and what level of p&p Is appropriate In terms of delivery times when ordered from the International warehouse, It appears to vary from nearly ยฃ19 for an air parcel whatever that means down to about a fiver for International registered, but doesn't specify delivery timescales. Thanks Shaun.
