nothing has been ruined boatshed, as you know when we take on a new build that we like to be sure things are correct to the real boats and if we are to part with our hard earned money things need to be right in the first place and not need loads of work to put it right before you can start building. CB90 i'm guessing that your farther was the original build that was in the
    model boats magazine
s back in 1985, it was coming across this article that got me intrigued in these boats and have been researching ever since if you have any more info on your fathers builds that would be great. cheers Ron

Hi Welcome to the site. I suggest you buy a copy of the
    model boats magazine
to see what might appeal. You can then contact one of the advertisers to get more details. If you need a ready built model you can usually find one on e-bay or in a local auction. There are pitfalls and if you can find a local friendly Model Shop or Club they will guide you in the right direction. Good hunting

Hi Colin, what scale is it? If you Google 'Plastic Magic' you should get lots of example of this from 350 / 400 scale carriers and battleships down to 72 scale Vosper MTB, KM S100 / E-Boat etc. There are also several Plastic magic articles in

. The general principles are always the same: lightweight miniaturised electronics incl. servos! Do a max payload test on the bare hull as the very first thing. Weigh the major superstructure assemblies and decks and subtract from max payload: that's what's left for electronics and battery! The kit props are generally useless, no pitch, so make your own out of tinplate or 0.5mm brass. can be a little oversize, no one will know๐Ÿ˜‰ Prop shafts and tubes: 2mm OD / 1mm ID brass tube with 1mm silver steel or piano wire shafts. Couplings from shrink sleeve. will dig out some motor types and sources tomorrow, there are also some given in the Model Boats mag articles. That's where I found the Micron Radio tip๐Ÿ˜Š Can heartily recommend Micron radio for the smallest combination RX and ESC on one tiny board that I've ever seen! Talk to Andy Rutter, he offers excellent advice and will fit tiny connectors and pre-program the RX board to match what you want to do. He also has very very tiny servos which are ideal.๐Ÿ‘ http://www.micronradiocontrol.co.uk/ Look under RC components - 'Deltang Ultra micro'. you ain't gonna get no teeny weenier! huntsman plan
    model boats magazine
January 2016 ncluded a free plan of a Huntsman 31 complete with photos and a step by step build guide. Unfortunately the model is 24". I also wanted a bigger model so I redrew the plan double size. it wasn't too difficult and only took a couple of evenings with a some lining paper from B&Q and a calculator and voila! At the moment I am planking the roof of the cabins and trying to decide between a brushless motor and an old Weston rare earth brushed motor I used to use for fast electrics. The article in MB also ran into February 2016 where all the fiddly finishing bits were described, also with many photos. I expect one can obtain back issues from their web site. Anyone interested in Huntsmen should get these two issues for the detail alone.

    ''Vanity'' leaves the building board
Ah, my replacement copies of Plank-on-Frame Models have arrived. indistinguishable from the copies I lent and never got back. I simply cannot be without these books. I've had them since I was wee loddy in Devon, when my love of quality model boats began. I was a member of the Thames Ship Lovers and Ship Model Society and got my first ever proper commission through them. Where are they now? They were one of the main London based clubs at one point, meeting in a Pub in the West End on a Tuesday night. I believe the magazine Model Shipwright came about through those meetings. Now, even that magnificent organ has gone. What is it about model boaters? No TSLSMS, no Scale Sail, no Model Shipwright. And no doubt Maritime Models has gone in Greenwich and Model Shipwrights in Putney. For a maritime nation all this is a disgrace. Martin

    Got it so here goes...
I built the Fairey Huntsman by Precedent back in the โ€˜70s. it must have been a very different kit to the one being sold now. I had few resources back then but somehow managed a half decent job of it with a glow plug engine for power. Never could start it, and eventually sold it to someone prepared to persevere with it. it must have had a few fittings, and plans, unlike the current one, which is really poor quality. After some consideration and a timely article in
    model boats magazine
, I ordered the plans from Myhobbystore.com. I still wanted to make it the size of the kit so had to get them enlarged to 11th scale.; not a problem. So this build blog is to encourage anyone wanting to build this delightful classic boat not to get a kit but to scratch build it. Better and much more satisfying. Youโ€™ll probably have to scratch build all the fittings and detailing anyway. I didn't manage to take detailed photos all the time but hopefully there will be enough to be useful. I got lucky with supplies of appropriate ply at my local Menshed, and got on with cutting out the frames on their scroll saw. I had plenty of materials accumulated over years and lots of cedar from venetian blinds, which is really good for planking etc. The plans are more accurate than the kit and have much nicer hull lines. Fitting the frames was straight forward, and double cedar chine strips were epoxied in.

As mentioned earlier, had a similar experience. Whilst the reason Alex was given could be accurate, must admit that the kids "dropping the ball" has never compromised their ability to debit credit cards! Also got reimbursed by the card company, but that just drives all our costs up. Likewise was in touch with the Editor of Model Boats as consider a magazine should be concerned with the integrity of its advertisers. Would be disappointing to hear that a newcomer to our hobby, frustrated in dealings with a supplier, could give it up. It would be valuable if this website could offer a forum where enthusiasts could comment on their dealings with suppliers so could compare notes. From my experience with this company, now always check on the internet for reviews, fortunately most suppliers have good ones.

    Thames Barge - ''Kitty''
This is a my first scratch build and is based on a free plan issued with
    model boats magazine
. At the moment I am at the hull stage and am just about ready to fibre glass the interior before sorting out the motor mount, prop shaft and sail control items before installing the deck. When the fibre glassing is finished I reckon most of the rest will be a winter project. After a 12 month absence I can now submit a few pictures of my nearly completed Thames Barge 'Kitty'. All I now require is a false keel and set of sails, which a club member is making for me. It has been a long slog fitted in between my other interests etc. but I am quite pleased with the result so far. Thanks to our club members for their advice and help. As a rooky with regards to scratch building it has been a very worthwhile project. Attached are a few piccies of how it looks at the moment.

    Free plans
HI Martin Looked at the Outerzone site and its Impressive. Mostly covers vintage model plane plans and I wonder if this is the sort of boat plan you are seeking? Many older model boats were built from semI kits where the parts were supplied pre-cut and the plans were really just a guide to construction rather than a full plan of parts, modern kits are not much different. You can redraw the formers etc from the plans but some effort is required. There are plans available to purchase but they can be costly and bulky, my RMS Olympic plans run to 6 sheets each 4' x 20' and cost nearly ยฃ200. The model magazines do produce free plans and I suspect many of us have a few in our possession. If it is a particular model you are wishing to build, I suggest you ask for it by name or type as someone may have a plan you could borrow.

HI Vortex, I have just received the result of my latest (and last says the wife!) Ebay purchase. Sold as just " vintage model boat", it is a Surfury obviously built straight from the Model Boat plans. Not too bad a shape for an old boat, but has been liberally painted in a black sticky goo of some kind which comes off on your hands but I bet will take some shifting to restore the boat. Was at one time I.C. powered as you can see the exhaust hole on the transom, but was obviously last used electric powered and came with a tiny old motor and some out of the ark elctronics. Think that I will be using a small brushless set up as electric is kinder to old wooden hulls than I.c. I am looking for 1/12th scale crew , been looking at Tamiya car and bike figures but no luck yet. By chance, I also came across a very clean copy of
    model boats magazine
for November 1968 which had a 2 page article introducing the Surfury plan. Best part is the cover which is one of the stunning Laurie Bagley paintings that they used to use , of Surfury at full pelt really riding the waves. Perhaps it is just old age setting in, but I really find the offshore boats of that era extremely attractive , more so than the curvy fibreglass ones that are used nowadays. I think that Jerome would do quite well if he re introduced hulls of that type for fast electric . When I get a chance I will try and get some decent pictures of it and include them on here

    Control switch access.
The Action electronics dual motor controller does have a power cutoff, set at just over 11 volts, so well within the safe limits of the lipo's, but after a few sea trials now, I "know" when the batteries are past their sell by date and due to be either swapped, or need "resting" for a while before further running. I do have a small "plug in" lipo cell volt checker which I can plug in to the chraging/balancing lead if I need to do so, but even after I have decided they are too flat to run in the boat, the celles still give a set of 4 green lights on the tester, but comon sense tells me its better to remove for recharging. The hatches are quite a sturdy fit on my boat, I found that if you get the height of the coaming right on both the deck and the lip on the hatch Iitself, the hatch "clicks over" the lip and locks down. the hatch springs are a neat idea, nicked off the build in the
    model boats magazine
. Firstly you wind a small brass wire around a suitable metal bar, then once formed, cut the spring in half, but remember to leave sufficient "tag" on the spring ends so you can lock the ends in place, so as you open the hatch, they open as normal, but the springs dont try to close or stretch. crafty idea but definately "look" the part. The power master switch is a maplins jobby, rated at 20 amps. no, does not get hot, have checked after a good long fast run session!
