Fairey Huntsman

I have for sale an unfinished Fairey Huntsman 31, I started it approx 9 months ago as a project with my grandson but his attention has now turned to model railways, subsequently I have now lost interest in completing and sailing it, the boat is approx 90% complete and comes with new RC equipment battery motor etc, I am looking for £250 just to recoup the costs and to put to his new model railway. I live inStoke-on-Trent if anybody would like to have a look,

Friday's Child Fairey Huntsman 31

Hi Brianaro, many thanks for that. i am about to go and check that out. As well as my old 70's wooden Huntsman, I also have an MFA Spearfish still in the box not touched yet. I had one back in the 80's with an Irvine 61 in it and it was a great fun boat. I did plan to do the same again with it but with the constant banning of using IC engines on the ponds around area's in the UK I suppose it will end up brushless. I know they are if not faster then IC now but the cost battery wise, now being retired the funds aren't as easily found now. The sad part is I still have 2 new SC 91's, 1 new SC 61 and a Irvine 120 all still new, never been run. I think there might also be an Irvine 61 that has no box. As well as a Zenoah 26c all pimped up in purple only run in ready to be put in a boat. Shed full of both engines and boats, some boats still new in the boxes still waiting to be built. Hopefully I will get to build them before I pop me clogs.

I am a great fan of the Fairey Boats I have a Huntsman model and would love to see a couple or three pictures of a real life one. Last time I saw one was back in the early 1970's on it's way out of Newhaven harbour.

Brushless motor(s)

Hi, I have recently purchased a KD Perkasa kit 37" and would like to power it with a brushless motor, but being an Old F**t I know nothing at all about Brushless Motors or their relevant speed controllers or battery power. So I would like your input on what exactly I need, obviously I would like the model to have a fair turn of speed. Thanking you in anticipation of your much needed assistance. Little Charlie

Hi I am working on a Perkasa 37" and I added two sets of double 10mm magnets to the front of the wheelhouse and one set at the stern. I can lift the whole boat with battery by the wheelhouse. I do not think it's going to come off !!! Canabus

Good to see another Fairey. What size is your Huntsman? I'm busy scratch building three different Faireys at the moment and the Huntsman 31 will be a future project. I've got one of the 46" but it's too big and heavy really. Chris

I am also upgrading the prop shaft, I have purchased a 4mm shaft to use that has a decent outer casing. All other boats I have built the side chine rails have all bee 1/4 x1/4 inch rails. I am just so disappointed with some of the substandard use of certain parts. I just feel for the price they are cutting costs to up their profits on the boat. I have built a few of the older AeroKits like the RAF crash tender, Sea commander, Sea Queen and Sea Hornet as well as the Fairey Huntsman, and these all have a substantial set of side rail to fit and even the bulk head pieces are a much better thickness of ply. I would just not recommend the Aeronuat kits to anyone myself now. I was just going to fit a standard Gruapner speed 400 motor in but still unsure. I was thinking maybe a brushless may just be a bit overpowering her. but as I say still unsure, I may put in a brushless yet who knows. Keep us informed on here as to you progress I am keen to see your finished model. I suspect yours will be finished well before mine as I have shelved the build for now. Happy modelling.

Perkasa

This is a 49" Perkasa built from a ply kit - the build blog is on this site. Videoed from a 46" Fireboat on a lake in Western Australia. Neither boat is running at top speed, which is spectacular but overscale! Both boats have identical brushless motors. Apologies for the video being a bit long, and for the water on the lens, but this is a first attempt and I hope you enjoy the music.

Too Powerful Brushless ?

Hi All I am using Hobbyking 3639-1100 and 3648-1450kv motors in that size boats(Sea Commander, Huntsman and SG&K Gentleman's Runabout). 60 Amp ESC with either 3 or 4S Lipo batteries. Props 2 blade 40mm 1.4 or 1.6 pitch. The motors are a straight change over and the only change to the ESC is the low voltage setting for the 3S and 4S batteries. Canabus

Yes they do. Their model is tiny ,this is the 31" huntsman. The fittings look the perfect scale. in my opinion there too big for their model.

Hi Pilot I have the Huntsman 34" hull with the 3648-1450kv, 100 Amp car ESC, 2 blade 40mm 1.4 pitch CNC prop and at present only running on a 3S 5800mah Lipo. I am still working on the cabin and that windscreen. Installed the front, rear, toilet and kitchen windows and frames today. The boat is very quick in the 35-40KPHour mark, so it's not slow. Canabus

Motor problem

HI Richard I drop my prop angle to 9 and 1/2 degrees on my Huntsman 34" after removing the old IC motor. Running a 35 mm brushless motor on 3S and it's very quick!! More a speed motor than a motor cruiser. Canabus

Prop Shaft Angle

HI AndyG009 The steep angle was to get the diesel motors into the boat. On my Huntsman I decreased the drive line angle both at the prop and motor ends. The 35mm brushless motor was less diameter than the flywheel of the IC motor. I can still fit a 45mm prop with 5mm clearance, but, using a 40mm 2 blade. I quick test on Saturday and the boat has no problems with prop torque at full speed. I made a little larger rudder, mainly a bit deeper. Rudder control is very good. Canabus

Hi Novagsio Do tread carefully if you intend to use Westbourne as there has been posts on this and other sites regarding their poor service level and lack of advertised stock. Canabus has a build blog mdlbt.com/31424 Not sure exactly what fittings you require but Reade Models may be able to help as they supported fittings for many of the kits produced alongside the range. http://reademodels.com If you are looking for the window frames then you may need to fabricate from liteply, or if you have a 3D printer source have some fabricated.

Hi Novagsio The only place that my help you out is Westbourne model.co.uk, but, they sell to full kit. May sell the fittings kit. The original handrails from my fibreglass hull are total rubbish, but, I only got with my second hand unfinished boat the air scoops. So I plan on making the hand bow rail and windscreen. Hello all, been making great progress paint wise, and fitting out the huntsman. A popular DIY store paint came out the exact colour (Oxford Blue) I was look for. Radio control and motor mount nearly done just need to decide on the battery and wait for a nice day.

Some good progress made the weekend with a paint brush and the motor mount started, some holes for the motor to breath and the end plate machining now required. Also some details added to the top whilst other items were drying.

Thanks for the detailed reply however I missed your post and had bit the bullet and ordered the 850 motor. I decided to get the lipo safe 50A ESC, and first impression it's a beast of a motor. Maybe phase 2 will be a brushless setup at a later stage. Im hoping a lipo pack will save enough weight to give it some of the offshore PB performance it details in the instructions. :-)

Big Tone - what you have sounds like a Huntsman built from the kit. Plans are sometimes on EBay for the drawings for other kits but I've never seen any for the . But be wary of the EBay offerings - I've bought drawings and the templates have been very poorly traced/drawn and are almost useless and I've had to redraw them. But as regards the I have one, bought already built and done pretty well so if you want any photos let me know. Chris

Hi Great work MUM !!! I moved over to brushless motors three years ago. The power of these things are unbelievable. I have a 46" Crash Tender which is getting a L5055C 700KV motor on a 4S 5800mah Lipo battery via 100Amp Hobbyking car ESC. Prop 2 blade CNC 52mm 1.4 pitch. No loaded RPM 10360 against the 850 at 9778 rpm. NO water cooling on the motor and the car ESC has an electric fan, so at low speed you have no cooling problems. The two motors are about the same size. As for battery connectors I use XT60 which I think are better then the Deans. The ESC's are very easy to setup with the program card. I can post my settings which I use on all my boats. I also have the smaller 34" Huntsman which I am restoring. Canabus

I had this boat, a kit at the age of around 10 and my dad and I started it. Following a couple of years the boat was nearly finished and for some strange reason the build stopped. After collecting dust for more than 30 years and the sad passing away of my father, I decided to get the boat down and make a fresh start with the intention of finishing it this time. My only dilemma is the choice of motor we initially decided some 30 years ago to run a 6V Hectaperm electric motor off its gear box direct drive, but this has since found its way into our 'Imara' Tug and is more than well suited. I cannot decide either to use a Tornado 850 or a brushless motor, the pro and cons are immense. As can be seen my mother use to paint all my dads boats, and she is now helping paint bits on this one, I insisted as traditional. Hope to post regular and the finished results around 14 May next year my father's B-day. Anyway any advice welcome.

Hi All Repaired one of the broken cabin pieces under the aft side window and added strengthen timber forward and aft(windows). The gap under the windows to the deck, I laid down two layers of masking tape and mixed up some Selley's Plasti-bond. Pushed the cabin onto this and waited for it to harden. Removed cabin, removed the masking tape, sand the areas and spray filler undercoated. A nice clean gap!!! Canabus

Sea Queen refurbishment

Hi RNinMunich I agree with you past, respect the past but move forward. With a lot of areas of limit to IC motors we have to move to brushless motors and Lipo batteries. I have changed over with the times and running brushless motors in my Aerokits Sea Hornet, Sea Commander and a restoring a Huntsman. These old boats can go as fast if not faster with the change over. Hi Gents I received my drive line last night and installed it and the motor mount, also added a wood block for the rudder. Fibreglass it all it. The prop is a 50mm with 4mm clearance, but, I run 40mm props on my boats this size. Canabus

Hi Lads I have a Sea Commander with a D3548-1100kv,3S Lipo,60Amp ESC and a 2 blade 40mm CNC prop. I bought a Huntsman 34" a few weeks ago and may be running a 3639-1100 or a 3648-1450 instead of the D3548 motor. As for motor mounts the aluminium angle works well and I just epoxy glue it in place. I like the Huntsman very much and I built one from the kit many years ago. it was the wooden hull version and it was quite fast with an MFA 850 Torpedo motor running on 12 volts. I sold it in 2004 and now I wish I hadnt. However I bought a 34 inch fibreglass hull this year at the Ellesmere Port show and I wondered if are still manufacturing kits as I have no plans for the superstructure. Boaty😎

Sorry to throw mud in your water, but if it's a huntsman it could be 28 , 31, or 32 ft the same applied to swordsman. But who care's as most of the kit form boats where 1/11th scale. My wife uses 1/12th scale figures from her dolls house days in her Huntsman.
