internet sales
Totally agree with all points mentioned๐, another way is to make a note of the things you need, now and in the future i.e. glue, fittings, paint etc, and then visit the model boat shows advertised around the UK, some are close, others not, for me I like Doncaster show, Haydock and Blackpool, going to shows allows you to choose from various
traders
and cherry pick the bits you want, it works for me along with the internet for items wanted NOW!

Norfolk Wherry Fans
I have often admired Thames Barges in Maldon and on the East coast rivers, but find their complexity off-putting, fine , majestic things though they are. But for me the simplicity of a Norfolk/Suffolk wherry is very attractive and there are few books so much worth curling up with on a rainy November day as Black Sailed
traders
by Roy Clark. OK, I can think of several, but you know what I mean. I am a very fussy sod and if I don't like how it looks, I can't get near it. To my eye, most foreign stuff is so much uglier than British, be they trains, cars, bikes, aircraft or boats. But then where would we be without Canadian woodies?
Or the very occasional italian car

Model Wherry hulls
Hi, 2 questions.
does anyone know of a GRP hull moulding of a Norfolk Wherry, preferably in a decent scale like 1/16th or 1/24th? Yes, I have Black Sailed
traders
, Wherries and Waterways and the cardback on Albion, but I am too old to bother with making stuff like hulls. I'd rather buy a decent hull and make the rest on top.
Also, I live in the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk Fens. Is there anyone in the Wisbech/March/ Downham Market area who wants to meet up with like souls and sail for absolutely FREE on any of the huge number of accessible waters we have round here, the Well Creek being one of them.
Ah, three questions....third? Does anyone know if the Scale Sailing Association still exists? I have googled all manner of things and got nowhere. I am not interested in what I call Isle of Man yachts or other modern things with film glued on the decks and sails made of anything other than cotton. I do have a Marblehead, but it's a beautiful vintage one, once owned by Sir Thomas Lipton.

Wherry hull in GRP
Ron, I really can't get into GRP moulding due to the mess and the stink. My last GRP work was rebuilding the rear corners of first, a large canal cruiser and secondly, my Reliant Fox 4 wheel van, both, of course, outdoors. I will make a wherry in clinker to the Gleaner plans in Black Sailed
traders
and then, if Arron hasn't redone his model by then you can mould it in GRP if you still fancy it. But it has to join all the other jobs I set myself first!

Until last year we hosted the March Model Boat Show at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, but dwindling space and the Museum,s lack of proper support with regard to advertising, sadly caused us to not go ahead with it this year. We are planning, however, to have a Model Show in May 2019 at our new venue. Hopefully many of the

Wherry hull in GRP
All I get is a single page with dozens of headings on it, each another single page and if I click home I get Not found. Not impressive. I get no sign in/log on, etc.
I think some of the items are 3Dprinted, but they are very cheap, so I reckon he has his own machines. My son does and says he can produce stuff cheaper by far than Shapeways.,etc. The guy behind Mastman seems to be unusually young, so 3D print would seem to be all he knows. But he needs to improve that wherry out of all recognition before he deserves to sell even one.
Wherries were occasionally painted green where that one in the pictures above is blue.
A read of Black Sailed
traders
is all you need to know about wherries and it has good drawings of Gleaner, a "proper" clinker wherry. it has sections, so any model can be done from it. I am considering making one in 1/16th scale, using one layer of 1/16th" sheet ply for the twist, with a second to thicken the plank to a scale 2" thickness. it would be immensely strong too.
I'm almost looking forward to it now.

Wherry hull in GRP
Cheers, KMB. I couldn't find one either. Odd, because I once bought a pair of built boats (Albions) and then sold them when I moved as I had no space. And they were both GRP hulls. Wish I had them now! Although I still find a carvel Wherry somehow wrong.
I have Wherries and Waterways, but for sheer atmosphere Black Sailed
traders
, by Roy Clark, is the one for me and it also has good drawings of Gleaner in it.
I can't personally see why the Thames Barge is so much more popular. The Wherry sailed better with fewer sails and crew and I reckon it was a much more attractive shape AND they had a lot of real races for them, too.
Looks like I might have to make a hull and offer its use to a GRP moulder as a pattern in exchange for the first decent moulding. Then I can race a wooden one against a GRP one. in 1/16th scale it'll be 40" long, which is a nice size with a beam of 10 1/2". And it's the same scale as my Vanity cutter and my Crash Tender.

34'' Crash Tender - prop / rudder type
Hi peter, do you want a brass 3 blade prop for cosmetic reasons, if so they do look nice.
I did extensive testing with my 3 foot fireboat using brushed, then brushless motors, and then prop testing. I was using eagle tree data logging for watts, amps, gps speed etc.
The plastic two blade cheap as chips props actually produce similar readings to the more expensive brass 3 blades. Personally, as you are at the "guess work" stage, just use the plastic two blade ones, but use "x" pitch, standard wont give you the speed. Get a few sizes, 30, 35 40 mm and test. When you have the optimum set up you can then go to the expense of the brass prop. I sent Simon Higgins (ex prop shop) my readings and he made a specific prop for my boat, its a 35mm cleaver 3 blade. He has his own company now but I've forgotten what it is! He was at Blackpool last year so someone might have the list of
traders
. His props are balanced and one piece, very nice.
I also experimented with a belt driven gearbox. The set up I have at the minute is this motor
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-t600-brushless-outrunner-for-600-heli-880kv.html
overkill really! but my 3 footer is an original very heavy aerokits boat.

Blackpool Model Boat Show
I went Saturday and found good attendance from the public,
traders
and Clubs. Lighting was as good as any other show I have attended and I always enjoy talking to both clubs and
traders
to find out about models or new products. Every show I attend is a whole new experience and as a scratch builder it gives me an opportunity to find and discuss new parts/products and techniques. With the demise of many local model shops this is now one of the few opportunities for such advice and help. We all have expectations but really its up to us what we make of the show. I agree with Flack we either support the events or there won't be any.

I was also at the Blackpool Model Boat show on Saturday and was quite impressed with the show in general, it's always very easy to criticise venues and I accept that the Norbreck Castle is not perfect but I didn't have any problem with the lighting nor the number of
traders
or exhibitors, I do like the fact that everything is on one level and easily negotiable. I am amazed that there are comparisons with the likes of Ellesmere Port and Haydock Park in particular as I have been to both and find negotiating the various separate rooms and different levels a nightmare, I always leave both venues wondering whether I have seen everything. As a modelling fraternity we are in danger of losing these exhibitions and having to rely on internet purchases.

Is westbournemodel@ co serious?
if you use the fr*sky system I can recommend T9 Hobby Sport
https://www.t9hobbysport.com/
Everything I have ordered arrived, and no problems, one occasion there was an error ( crossed communication) and they offered to send correct item free of charge! I declined since it was not clear the mistake was theirs or mine and what was sent I could use.
I suspect that the majority of model suppliers are honest
traders
making a moderate living from what was a hobby.
By the way if you use LiPo batteries you should consider getting a fr*sky system since you can fit a small unit between the receiver and your LiPo balance lead, this will allow your battery voltage to be sent back to the transmitter and alarms trigger points set so you can preserve the battery.

100% true Alan, the event organisers are charging ridiculous money for
traders

I agree with you Shaun, I was only there for 1 1/2 hours, bought what I could find, looked at the few models and left.
There will be one less trader next year as Modeltimbers will not be attending any more shows.
I know one trader who thinks that the charge for a table at shows has got beyond a joke, couple that charge with traveling expenses, and often having to stay overnight, plus what is stolen off the stall I'm not surprised there are getting less

Model Boat Convention 2015
I attended the show with Crewe & District MBC where we had two stands, one for our club models and another for Joe Sydlowski's super 1:72 scale model of the USS Arizona, which was voted Best in Show by the Exhibitors, receiving the Robin Woodall Memorial Trophy, sponsored by the Woodall Family.
We participated in the Tug football with the Ribble MBC and whilst not winning we managed to give a very credible stand against their greater numbers and more experienced tug footballers.
We had a really great time and the matches seemed popular with the public, probably because there are no rules and many sinkings on both sides.
We look forward to next year and as many asked where we sourced our tugs, which are a suitable replacement for the now discontinued Pollux tugs used by Ribble, I sourced from Amera Plastic Mouldings in Northumberland (www.amera.co.uk).
The show was well up to its usual standard with masses of models on display and lots of
traders
in attendance.
As usual the event was in the safe hands of Jean Barlow and her committee plus a raft of helpers who made the event so pleasing to attend. On behalf of all who attended I offer our gratitude and thanks and look forward to attending next year on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August 2016 at Haydock Park.
