IOM Malteser - Dude Alert!
I have not done any sailboat racing for 15 years or so but have decided that this year I shall hone my skills. My chosen boat is an IOM Malteser called Dude Alert!
I did not choose the name: it was already registered with it

A new addition to my harbour: a Robbe Comtesse. I hope i shall find this more relaxing to sail than my DF65

Not much to show at the moment as acquired as a box of bits with no paperwork at all! Itβs a research & development project as I find out how Graupner VSPs work and how to control them effectively

Actually my 10 year old grandsons boat which we built together. The outboard was made by a friend; mainly 3D printed.

Back in the 70βs I lived for about 6 months on the left bank in the appartement tower block. I wish I had known them that there was a model boat club nearby. I thought Antwerp was a lovely city.

π Egrete - Progress
4 months ago by

Thanks cdnfurball, but Iβm not that good; I cheated. The brass stanchions are factory made and I just soldered the brass wire to them.
There is a bit of a knack to it though. I put plumbers white flux on the rail before sliding the stanchion into the correct place and then a little bit more over the ball and onto the rail.
I use normal electrical solder with resin core but instead of getting the work to temperature and then bringing the solder to the joint I pick up a blob of solder on the 30W iron and just press it to the ball.
The solder from the iron almost instantly flows onto the work pieces and generally no blobs, unless Iβve put too much solder on the iron.
Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy π

Hereβs a little more progress on the Egrete. Iβve finished making the railings around the bulwarks, painted them and they are now fixed in place.
This allows me to clear my bench briefly to check over my new IOM Malteser ready for some sailing on Saturday.

π Egrete - Progress

The last time I mentioned any progress was when Iβd hit the bridge raising/lowering working to my satisfaction and added navigation lights I think.
As that was a few months ago I thought it was about time to post another progress report.
This time Iβve been adding deck features and working on railings.
Most of the deck βfurnitureβ had been fitted now and some progress had been made with railings. These have proved a bit tricky but are coming along.
I made the port and starboard railings by drawing them out on cartridge paper, cutting and laying out the parts over the drawing and soldering them over my plan.
I used resin cored solder but also little dabs of white plumbers resin at each joint. I cleaned up any blobby bits of solder and exposed rail ends with needle files and scrubbed them gently with soapy water before drying and spray painting.
The stern railings were a little tricky as they had to avoid bollards, etc. so I drilled the deck edge and assembled the railings in situ and then soldered them in place. Iβm not happy that some of the stanchions are not quite vertical but Iβm sure, by the time they are painted and fixed in position theyβll look OK.
A fellow sailor I know once told me that he builds to 5 metre scale. I was puzzled but he explained that if the finished item looked good from 5 metres then it was OK π
I hope the pictures are OK

Hi AndyN,
Sometimes I like to stroll and other times I like to run π
I like wooden boats too, in fact Iβve raced some very nice wooden boats such as the old Triple Crown and Nimbus; and also bimbled about with them. These days I can afford to have the choice thank goodness. Kind regards Brian

BTW I donβt race for medals, cups, etc. I only race at club level with friends. Itβs friendly racing but I find it helps to improve skills while also having a laugh π

Thank you Doug. Here are a few photos of the mechanics, inside and out.
Just a standard servo for the mechanics and a 2nd channel driven from my RadioMaster TX16S tranny to switch the Amber lights on before movement starts and to switch off again when finished via a single channel electronics switch.

Perhaps, because I marked it as child safe, itβs waiting for some kind of approval before it can be accessed π€
Iβll keep an eye on it and as soon as I can view it in YouTube Iβll post a link.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the quick response. As soon as I posted my plea for help I realised that I was asking others to do what I should have done anyway and searched the forum for previous advice.
I found a previous post from you, I think, and am now in the process of trying to upload the short clip to YouTube π
I have not made it public but hopefully it will work from a link in a new post.
Watch this space π
Regards
Brian

A couple of months ago, wow was it only such a short time ago that I joined?
Anyway, CB90 suggested that a video would be in order of the bridge operation on my Egrete.
Hopefully, the attached vid might work: letβs see π€
Well, that does not seem to have worked. Do I have to upload my vid to YouTube and then add a link here?
Some advice would be very welcome. Thanks
Brian

I used to be a member at Beale Park but have not been able to meet up with members at the new site yet. I dropped out of the hobby for around 10 years but now retired have come back and usually sail at Eastrop, Basingstoke.
I used to have a few IOMs ad well as one of the little David Swain yachts. Iβd like to get back into IOM if I could get a tidy one for less than a mortgage π
When do you guys usually meet up at the lake?
