South Devon Crabber :- Cygnus GM 32' 1/12 Scale. Donor hull 32" fitted out/scratch built. Replica of actual vessel that floundered off Weymouth in 1983. Model build started in 1981 and completed in 2018 !!!

Partial rebuild project. It is a 1/24 scale Thames Tug which has a superstructure that is wrong and out of scale. I intend to rebuild the superstructure and make it more like a Thames Tug but not replicating any particular Tug as there are too many discrepancies in the build up of the hull which I do not want to alter as I am on a tight budget. I am building her and naming her in tribute to my long suffering partner to my hobbies, Jo. Photo of her as is. More photos to follow as progress is made.

But not without incident ! On getting her out of car I snagged the aerial 'Y' on top of 'A' Frame and that said goodbye to that and my dressed ship flags ๐Ÿ˜ญ but apart from that all was good.

Looks like it could be a Thames Steam Tug, I'm not sure ! I have just acquired this lovely hull and I am not sure of it's build or origin. It is fibreglass and is 57" (1450mm) LOA X 14.5" (370mm) Beam. It has a very basically built superstructure which I don't think is appropriate. I would be very grateful if anyone has any idea what she is and any other information as to weather it was a kit that has been modified. I would love more information as to scale etc. Regards your shipmate. Ballast AKA Alan.

It's the rookie again !!! Can anyone please run through how to fit a Seuthe Smoke Generator please ? I want it to have it's own switch. I am going to be running my Puffer with an electric motor through a speed controller off of a 6V lead battery. Does it have to have it's own separate battery or can I run it off the system ? Help will be appreciated !!!๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Hi Hugh. Thanks for you input. I find other peoples ideas and methods very helpful as a bit of a rookie !!! You're a brave man working from scratch, I haven't attempted building a hull yet but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Hope the weather in OZ is kinder to you than what is happening here in Blighty. Good luck with the build buddy, I'll keep you updated !

Hi Everyone. My next build is a Clyde Puffer in the guise of Auld Reekie/Vital Spark ! I am starting with a 1/24 Scale GRP Hull from Orion Mouldings. I am in need of a bit of forward planning assistance so if anyone has built from the same hull or very similar I would be grateful for some input as regards size of electric motor length of shaft and prop size and anything else that could be of help to me. This is only my second build so I am still, very much a rookie !!! Alan.

๐Ÿ˜‰Thanks for that. I have been looking for some suitable little boxes that would suit but no joy so I'll give this method a whirl, I only need a few for bait, the crabs are in much bigger containers and computer ink cartridge boxes suit, like the one in photo !!!

Thanks so much Graham. I am really touched by
that and I know if he was alive so would "Skipper" Paul. Absolutely brilliant. Cheers mate. Actually, apart from a few pot buoy's, that's about all that was found of the boat ! Uncanny!!!

Hi GrahamP74. Sorry but I have just seen your pics of the boat in the hot tub. I hope you don't mind if I make an observation but I think she rides a little high in the water at the stern ! Cygnus always advise that the lowest part of the transom should be about 25/26cms below the water at the lowest point which in 1/12 scale terms is 2.5cms. How much ballast have you got in her and where? I have attached a photo of mine for your info also one of the real deal to demonstrate what I mean. I have a 4lb divers belt weight in mine in the stern over where the prop shaft exits the hull and two six volt batteries amidships which weigh 4lbs each = total ballast 12lbs. You look to have the same amount of deck clutter so that is about what I would be putting in yours. As I say, it's just an observation but if you have a look at any Cygnus boat in any harbour that seems be the rule of thumb. Hope you don't mind me picking up on this.
Alan. Ps the bow looks just a tad high above the waterline as well.

32 foot Crabber "Exuberent" was built in 1981 and operated out of Dartmouth in Devon, she also spent the winter seasons working out of Weymouth in Dorset. She was returning to Devon from the Dorset coast when she was lost with her skipper. Her name, "Exuberent" is not a spelling mistake, it was spelt this way as there was already a boat of that name registered and it had to be differenced to be included in the Lloyds Register. This model is a tribute to her and her skippers untimely loss.

Mizzen/Steadying Sail in place but needs tweaking ! it will only be used for display purposes as it was only used when hauling pots to keep the boat into wind, not as an underway aid ! I dread to think what effect it would have on the model underway on our lake !!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

She Floats !!! And on her marks !!! Albeit a slight list to the Port side which is due to her open working starboard side and is a characteristic of the real deal. To say I am chuffed is an understatement after first starting the build 36 years ago !!!
